Tuesday, February 23. 1909. THE VANCOUVER WORLD FIFTEEN VV The MONDAY NIGHT SHOWS AT LOCAL PLAYHOUSES Western Rich Farms in Fraser Valley Central Situation Well Improved Cheap There is a decided movement now in New Westminster City property. It is not a boom, but rather a natural demand from keen investors for good lots. The real estate prices in New Westminster are not inflated, therefore this is a good time to buy.

Institute last night was not slow to recognize them and show Its appreciation. There can be no question that the presentment of this class of pictures Is making a distinct Impression on the public, and is furnishing a popular and unique source of entertainment. "The Girl Nihilist" Is on of the best studies in dramatic arrangement that has been shown, and all the emotions are appealed to In the various situations involved. "Artillery Manoeuvres" Is also a capital picture, which Is likewise instructive, as showing the mobility and precision with which modern field artillery can be handled. "The White Man's Burden" shows many interesting spots on the Delagoa Bay to Johannesburg line, and is of decidedly educational value.

The Cbronophon items are both tuneful and appropriate. "My Beloved," from "Faust," Is the best of them, and the reproduced voice of the singer is natural and very clear. This bill is a good one, and will repay a visit. A complete change is announced for Thursday. Limited Proprietors of the Western Institute for the Treatment of Alcoholism and the Drug Habit.

Once again Vancouver has welcomed the Pollards and today admiration for the "kiddles" who have delighted the public of two hemispheres for years, touches top notch. In "Florodora," at the opera house last night, ihey scored another success. It Is almost entirely unnecessary to recall the thread of the narrative that runs through the musical comedy that haa Its habitat In the Island of flowers and fantasies In the Philippines. Everybody has been consumed with admiration of the "sextet of girls" that la one of the main features of "Florodora." the spirit of the enchanted Isle expressed in terms and powers of femininity.

The sextet was very much there Inst night. Of Oie artistes, what shall be said? To the Helntz brothers belongs the palm. They were excruciatingly funny, funny men. especially Professor Tweedlebunch. MIhs Ivy Pollard, ns Lady lolyrood, was delightfully clever, and MIhs Rose McOarllck, as Do ores, with a deeply sentimental regard for the shade of the palm, was also good.

Teddy Macnamara, as (illffllr, cleverly supports the role of the "bloated plutocrat," in whom the stirrings of youth yet quiver. Tonight. "I.a 1'oupee," or "The Toy maker," will be produced. It will be given under the auspices of the Wallabies, and another full house Is anticipated. "THE WOI.F." The offering at the Vancouver opera house on Wednesday and Thursday nights will be "The Eugene Walter's great play of the Canadian Northwest, the one pronounced dramatic success of the year.

It will be staged hero in a striking manner, reinlnlug the atmosphere of the Canadian Hudson's Hay fur country in a series of beautiful and colorful scenes, same as at the I.yrlc theater. New York, where it has been enjoying a most successful run. "The Wolf," during Its engagement will be presented with an exceptionally strong cast, as the play demands. Mr. Andrew Robson will be the Beaubten, and ha Is said to make the French Canadian handsome and manly.

He reads beautifully and forcibly, satisfies, In fact, the eye and the ear, and creates a character. Others prominent In the cast are l.eola Palmer, Alfred Swenson. B. A. Lamar, Louis Halncs FRUIT FARMS IMPROVED 1 7 j2 ACRES, of which eleven acres is cleared, balance easy clearing.

Inside of a year a tramline will be constructed quite close to this farm. We are willing to offer you this farm at a sacrifice price for quick sale. Price on application. CAMEBAPHONE. That the songs at the Cameraphone theater ate catchy Is evidenced by the faot that the management has had dosens of applications from ladles who wish to secure them and want to know where they can be had.

This is particularly so of "The Pretty Things You Bay," sung in their bright turn by Baker and Breen. and "Maiden With the Dreamy Eyes," sung by another clever pair. Wellington A Gage. The Military Quartet Is one of the best in the way of voice balance, blending and clearness of enunciation heard here for many a day. "Lazy Moon." their first number, Is sung in conventional evening clothes; the second two, negro melodies, in darkey make up.

James A. Grady certainly made good in his comic songs, especially "When I Get Pickled." This evoked roars of laughter. "A Visit to Yale" Is a clever sketch, and closes with a charming musical number. The burlesque Irish Justice 'evoked roars of laughter, and Doctor Cureall was an amusing farce of the rough and tumble variety. The bill, on the whole, is remarkably good and is sufficiently diversified to suit all tastes.

and William Burt. MANUFACTURING SITE VATER FRONTAGE FOUR ACRES WITH 240 FEET DEEP WATER FRONT, adjoining city limits of New Westminster City. The property is traversed by the electric tramline, hence it is conceded to be an excellent site for a manufacturing concern or could be subdivided into city lots. C. ORPHEUM. The management of the Orpheum theater has provided an excellent bill this week, and some of its features are equal to the very best that have ever been seen ut the popular hous. It is seldom the privilege of vaudeville patrons 'n this town to listen to violin play eiich as that done by Errac last evening. Hot only for its splendid execution and general technique, but there is no doubt but what Errac is justified in his claim that he owns one of the most marvelous instrument in the world.

The tone of the violin is like the human voice, and I) AX IE 81I.LY. The favorable impression created by Mr. Daniel Wully In his Idaho comedy drama, "The Matchmaker." has more than Justified Manager RUketts In securing the "natural actor' for an engagement in this city. Mr. Sully and his excellent company will be seen at the Vancouver on Friday and Haturday evening, and from, present indications It Is likely that he will play to a crowded house.

"The Matchmaker" as a play scored one of the most pronounced successes In the theatrical history' when first presented, and the critics without excep tion have termed It one of the biggest hits of ths season. 0 LL. THE EMPRESS. The synthetic unity, the finely adjusted balance underlying last night's performance at the Empress theater of "Shall We Forgive Her?" suggested nothing so much as a conformation to the ancient Greek standard of perfection "Nothing In excess." No demand Is made upon either the Intellect or the deeper emotions: but. if Indulgence In genial mirth hns that restorative virtue which modern therapy would accord to It, the play possesses a high degree of tonlo potency.

Bven the slaldest last evening had difficulty lr, not exceeding the bounds of a modest hilarity, the Baron of Brad wardlne would phraBe It. As an episode of New England villas life, It Is essentially realistic or, at any rate, conforms to the realism of the typical fiction, whose province Is the depleting of New England rural life. The collection of representative types In this particular village would keep a psychologist analysing for a week, and each character Is admirably sustained. The rosy nuance of sentiment which colors It all becomes tinged towards the close with an ashen greyncss, hut only to recover and retain Indelibly Its native hue. Miss Hrlssac invests the role of Helen with all that deeper emotional sweetness which characterizes the woman whose soul has not emerged from the deeps of suffering warped with a crabbed cynicism, but with broadened and tolerent intuition.

The vivacious little minx. Ruznnna fMargharlta Fleclieri worms her way deeply Into one's affections. One could hardly help wondering how a biologist, would account for the presence in the same family of "airy fairy" Suzanna and her brother. the dear old bumpkin Toby (Allyn Lewis). Probably by a variation "per saltumV Just as excellently sustnlned is the balance of the enst.

and all In search of wholesome merriment would do well to attend the school examination and the village in the hands of such a master as Errao is the delight of all musio lovers and others as well. There are two sketches which range far alxjve tie average vaudeville sketch, and the first one, named "Catastrophe," by the Franklin Ardell Company, is really very clever, and is an amusing idea carried over the mistaken apprehensions of Mr. and Mrs. Xewlyned over the dog and the cat. Following this sketch come the Mareena troupe of Orman equilibrists and gymnasts.

These men show the wonderful training in the gymnasiums of the Germans, and some of the stunts they performed were almost hair raising. Their standard of work is very high. The Ellsworth Lindon sketch, entitled, "His Day Off," is a fine bit of hilarious farce. These two people contribe to keep a fast sketch moving so well that it is really a matter of compliment for that alone, not to mention the splendid farcical situations throughout the act. The playlet has to do with hubby taking a day off, and wifey puts him to work doing the chores, with the result that he gets into such a mess that almost semis the audience into convulsions.

It's good business all through, and next to the virtuoso, deserves the next place on the bill. A big act comes with the I.eno company of youngsters in a musical comedietta, with the scenes laid in the township school on examination day. There are ten of them and a capable lot of boys and girls they are. Two or three of them show coming talent, and the Hebrew impersonation of Charley AVood is good work. The songs are well sung and the whole turn is of superior character.

The motion pictures showed the tramps dream, and were greatly applauded. PILES CURED IN 6 TO 14 DAYS. In this Institute will be administered the treatment that the latest research has shown to be the most effective in the pure of these addictions. The Western Institute is under the supervision of the regular medical practitioners of thf city, so that patients are assured of the most skilful treatment obtainable for each particular case.

The various institutes of Seattlp and Portland advertising1 so called, secret remedies for the cure of alcoholism continually receive many patients from Vancouver. There is no reason why this should be, as these patients can be treated with as good results in the Western Institute by properly qualified physicians. The capital now being subscribed is to provide for the purchase and equipment of an Institute building having more accommodation aud better facilities than the Western .1 nstitute at present possesses. The dividend on the $5, 000 preference stock now being issued amounts to only $000 per annum. It is estimated that the two proprietary institutes for the treatment of alcoholism and the drug habit in Winnipeg earn between them not less than $10,000 per annum net profits.

From this it. will be seen that the Western Institute, which is the only Institute of its kind in British Columbia, cannot fail to prove a financial success. For the sale of the Western Institute to the company now being formed the present proprietors will accept the entire purchase price in Ordinary Stock, thus showing their confidence in the company's future. It should be noted that, until the dividend on the preference shares has been paid, the present proprietors of the Western Institute are satisfied to receive no return on their capital invested. Applications for shares should be made on the accompanying form The Secretary, The Western Institute, 050 Park Drive, Vancouver.

Dear Sir, I beg to apply herewith for 12 per cent cumulative preference shares of $20.00 each in the Western Institute, Limited, and enclose herewith being first payment of 5 per share. I agree to pay the balance in payments of $5 per Fhare, as railed upon, at intervals of not lss than three months. State full name: FANTAOES. Starting the week with three absolute capacity houses and hundreds turned away at the evening performances with twit policemen rniulred to keep the sidewalk clear In front of the theater and box seats hooked ahead all week it looks very much as if another new record was to be hung up at the Pnntages this week. And the cause or It all Is the presence of thns two famous (Id gladiators.

In which he tells some rich Irish stories atid some good jokes on himself.

Then he and Jake Kilrain don the gloves for a friendly three round bout, in which both show considerable cleverness and some of their old time speed. The two old gladiators made the biggest kind of a hit and were forced to respond to half a dozen curtain calls at the conclusion of their turn.
