IP SECTION C-PAGE ONE FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM TUESDAy MORNING JUNE 6 1972 SPORTS-MARKETS-OIL CROSSWORD-OBITUARIES oNomMO ealignment of Major Leagues Gainin Acceptance Everyone who talks of realignment takes inter-league play for granted "Traditional rivalry" no longer is a protection against low attendance in baseball By LEONARD KOPPETT 1972 New York Times News Service Realignment of baseball's major leagues advocated by critics and some insiders for years is closer to acceptance because of two recent events: The move of Willie Mays from San Francisco to New York and a Giant-Dodger game that drew 9885 paid admissions in San Francisco last Thursday Baseball's leadership which has always displayed amazing inertia is often influenced out of proportion by a dramatic or symbolic incident The process behind it may have been going on for a long time but stubbornly ignored but once it displays itself in something that catches everyone's attertic: long-resisted thoughts begin to receive consideration The connection between this habit pattern and the two recent happenings (both involving the Giants only incidentally) runs this way: Realignment means breaking up the existing composition of the four divisions that comprise the two leagues and regrouping the teams in a way to increase attractive pairings It is not automatically tied to inter-league play but everyone who talks of realignment also takes this for granted The resistance to this process has come from those who are unwilling to give up what they consider "traditional" profitable rivalries For instance when the National League expanded from 10 to 12 teams for the 1969 season to match dli eApcutsion already voted by the American the Mets were among those who staunchly opposed breaking the league into two divisions Their avowed reason was that they "couldn't afford" to have only six home games a rx with the Giants and six with the Dodgers instep of the nine they had in the old 10-team schedule Eventually there was a compromise: The American League which had already voted to cut its schedule A) 156 games (meaning three fewer home games fJr each team each year) agreed to go back to 1611 if the National would accept two divisions Furthermore in deference to the Mets the National League ignored geography and put St Louis and Chicago in the Eastern Division with the Mets But time goes on and things change rapidly as the a tried to point out in 1968 Not a single former Brooklyn Dodger is still playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the switch of Mays from the Giants to the Mets eliminated the last nos- Turn to Reshaping on Page 3 1M I ErS der Jaikt Elli 4 tW if '1Vom1 4 ry A SELLOUTS IN THE BIG-8 AND OTHER SHORT CHANGE In one mob scene and out the other Texas Tech coaches are up to their clip boards in young football players this month More RT57rl than 700 kids are enrolled in Jim Crien's annual football camp for young Donny Andersons By HAROLD AlcKINNEY Star-Telegram Sports Writer The Texas Rangers return to friendly Arlington Stadium Tuesday night to open a nine-game home stand and try to shake out of their recent overall mark of 18-26 four percentage points ahead of Kansas City in the West 1112 games behind Oakland New York which is in fifth place 612 games behind East leader Detroit hasn't been playing much better The Yankees are 18-24 after dropping a doubleheader to the Chicago White Sox Sunday Thursday night will be Little League and Junior Baseball Night with all youngsters who play in any organized baseball league being admitted free to the general admission section on the basis of one youngster per paid admission Both Wednesday and Thursday games will have a 7:30 pm starting time Jim Shellenback (1-2) and Peter Broberg (3-4) will be Texas' pitchers and they'll face Steve Kline (3-1) and Mel Stott lemyre (5-6) O'''''e 1- 4''1''k'43 ''iN4 15' 4 i': ''t'- A l'il'' 7s: I Se' 1 'S e'484 i 'tS' ON444 0 I 1 1 'Y''' 1 i I -6' 4 Al 0' --t 4:::::4 ::4 'e 1 i I :::1) 1 l'''''7' fP 4 -i -1' ilisikma140 I 4i You've heard about the hot race ex- pected for the Big Eight next fall?
