Cozza now in his 29th year struggling this fall with an injury-battered team that went into yesterday's 110th Yale-Harvard game with a 2-7 record Harvard wasn't much better at 3-6 It wasn't that way in 1968 Both teams were 8-0 coming into what always has been called The Game capital capital since it began in 1875 In 1916 when both schools were still among the ranking powers of college football Yale coach TAD Yale-Harvard was different then just as it is now In 1968 both teams were Division I not Division I-AA and the level of football played by the ancient rivals was relatively topflight Relative to today that is when the Ivy League would belong in Division IV if they created one In 1968 Yale even made the Top 20 at one point What made the events at Harvard Stadium on Saturday Nov 23 1968 special were forces larger than power ratings And the game itself well the Boston Globe's headline of the next day summed up the bizarre story: Jones delivered this memorable line at the end of his pre-game pep talk: "Gentlemen you are about to play Harvard This is the most important moment of your lives" It seemed that way in 1968 That was the first time both schools had gone into the season finale undefeated since 1909 This was The Game That isn't why I was offered $2000 for the 16 tickets I had for the 1068 game There was more to it than records For most college-age men in 1968 life was filled with frightening uncertainty Even the sons of Yale BY PHIL HERSH Chicago Tnbune i Twenty-five years That is just about right It has taken that long for this game to come into focus with- the blur of partisan passion Now I can see the 1968 Yale- Harvard game for what it really was: Ate greatest college football game of time Oh sure that makes you laugh you Notre Damers and Ohio Staters 'end Michiganders and Nebraskans and Miamians all you alums of places where the teams provide "football games of near professional quality "Harvard Beats Yale 29-29" OK OK maybe you had to be there to see Harvard tie with 16 points in the final 42 seconds lwas So was the Yale quarterback Brian Dowling who already had become the inspiration for "13D" in the comic strip Doonesbury then known as Bull Tales So was the Yale running back Calvin Hill who would go on to be a first-round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys and turn into the NFL's Rookie of the Year and an All-Pro So was the current mayor of Baltimore Kurt Schmoke soon to be a Bowl lineup Bowl Data Time TV Las Vegas Dec 17 7 pm ESPN John Hancock Dec 24 CBS Aloha Dec23 ABC Liberty Dec 28 7 pm ESPN Freedom Dec28 8pm Raycom Upsets could bring Irish back to Dallas ardin-S ons rolls to playawin and Harvard (both schools were then all-male) privileged as many of them were faced the Vietnam War then at its most awful and jntense All conversations beery or not eventually came back to a single sobering question: the impact of Vietnam on immediate futures Football became a pleasant diversion from all that It spurred devotion rarely seen at a place like Yale where it was considered unsophisticated to care about a football game In the days before Yale played Princeton in 1967 there were impromptu pep rallies on JIMMY BURCH FOn Worth Star-Telegram A pair of upsets involving two of the top four teams in The Associated Press college football rankings brightened the outlook yesterday for the Mobil Cotton Bowl Top-ranked Notre Dame lost at home to No 16 Boston College 41- 39 Ninth-ranked West Virginia upset No 4 Miami 17-14 The results dimmed the prospect i of the Fiesta Bowl hosting a national I championship matchup between 1 the two highest-ranked at-large I teams available to be selected under 1 terms of the bowl coalition Instead the Orange Bowl postseason des- I tination of No 3 Nebraska (10-0) 11 likely will emerge as the bowl to host a national championship matchup under coalition guidelines If that happens the Cotton Bowl benefits Here's how: Provided the Comhuskers rise to the No 1 or No 2 spot in today's coalition poll the Orange Bowl would be in position to match the nation's two top-ranked teams if Nebraska defeats No 15 Oklahoma in Friday's regular-season finale That will help the Cotton Bowl which likely would choose second in the coalition pecking order if 10thranked Texas (9-1) continues winning and No 8 Florida (9-1) loses next weekend to No 2 Florida State(10-1) The Orange Bowl after matching Nebraska against the highest-ranked at-large opponent most likely Florida State or Notre Dame would leave the lower-ranked of those two available to be selected by the Cotton Bowl Yes a Notre rematch looms as a strong possibility Miami at 9-2 also would be a possibility for the Cotton Bowl If favorites win out elsewhere but Texas (5-4-1) upsets in Thursday's winner-take-all game for the SWC championship the Cotton Bowl would drop below the Sugar and its first loss to a league member since 1984 when Boston College beat the Hurricanes on Doug Flutie's last-second touchdown pass It also was Miami's first loss in November since that "Hail Mary" loss a span of 32 games Miami held scoreless in the first half for the first time in nine years rallied to take a 14-10 lead on Donnell Bennett's 1-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter before a record crowd of 70222 at Mountaineer Field But West Virginia took advantage of a critical holding penalty
