Louis, Ft. Scott Wichita, and the Leavenworth, Topeka South-western railroads. The proposition was defeated by 250 majority, and now the Commissioners, who are Newton men, have thrown out the returns from Burrton, Sedgwick and Halstead, claiming that hundreds ot illegal votes were cast. As it now stands the majority for the bonds is 756 Of course the people of these towns are filled with indignation, and it will not be safe for one of those commissioners, who did the counting out, to visit either Sedgwick, Halstead or Burr-ton as the citizens would surely give them a coat of tar and feathers. IS THIS A SHEEP COUNTRY? The question has been discussed for years whether or not Barbour county was well adapted to sheep raising.

There certainly could be found'no better country under the sun for the raising of cattle and horses, but it has been claimed by many that the sheep industry would yet capture this country, for the reason that it required so much less capital to engage in the business, the returns are so much quicker, and that the country would soon be dotted with small herds of sheep, and the cattle men compelled to move westward. district court The above named defendant is notified that he has been sned bv said plaintiff, who, on the 1st day of March 1882 SLI SMITH, GEOKGIE GEPPERT. filed her petition the office of said dis trict court; charging said defendant, IDk the present time, simply because it requires but one or two men to take charge of a flock of sheep, and their purchase of provisions amount to but little during the year On the other hand, those engaged in the cattle business require many men, and these have to be fed and clothed, therefore our merchants and business men are benefitted thereby, and the town grows and prospers. Some might say we haye a selfish motive in reserving this country lor cattle and horse raising; but not so. It is our candid opinion, from what wo can learn, that but few, if any who are engaged in the business, really like it. There is money to be made out of sheep, but it requires the closest attention and unremitting toil to get it.
