Wednesday, March 26, 1986 The Miami Herald 3B Police, politicians call San Pedro's allegations big lies By JEFF LEEN DUCASSI Herald Staff Writers The scores of allegations made in affidavits and police tapes in the Alberto San Pedro case have brought strong denials from politicians, police and even a state prosecutor who have found their names tossed into the growing scandal: The manager of Miami Beach Mayor Alex Daoud's successful 1985 campaign called allegations that Daoud received unreported campaign contributions from San Pedro "an absolute lie." State Education CommissionRalph Turlington called an informant's statement that San Pedro planned to give Turlington $30,000 during the governor's daughter's wedding "a flight of fancy." Assistant State Attorney Tom Petersen said statements that he associated with San Perdo were "a blatant lie." The denials come as Metro detectives try to separate evidence of possible criminal conspiracies from statements which merely reveal San Pedro's tendency to inflate his influence with public officials. Investigations by the MetroDade Organized Crime Bureau and the FBI have focused on San Pedro's influence over the Hialeah City Council, the Hialeah Police Department and the Opa-locka City Commission. San Pedro is currently being held without bond in the Dade County Jail. He has pleaded not guilty to 64 charges including murder conspiracy, bribery and cocaine trafficking. In police affidavits released While influence peddler Alberto San Pedro sits in a jail cell, politicians call his allegations lies and 'flights of Friday, an informant stated that San Pedro had said he planned to meet Miami Beach Mayor Daoud on Oct.

25, 1985 and give him $5,000. Five days later, San Pedro said he was going to give the candidate another $5,000, the informant stated. Between Oct. 23 and Oct. 31, Daoud loaned his own campaign $66,903.22, according to the affidavit.

Daoud did not return repeated Herald calls for comment on the allegations. However, his 1985 campaign manager, Gerald Schwartz, spoke on his behalf. "I don't think the words of a convicted felon warrant comment from the mayor of a city," Schwartz said. Schwartz said the $66,903.22 for the campaign came from the proceeds of certificates of deposit owned by Daoud and loaned to the campaign in an effort catch up with the spending of then Malcolm Fromberg. "I told we needed additional sources of funds to overcome the expenditure of exMayor Fromberg," Schwartz said.

"When I him he needed more money he said the only place he could get it was from broken CDs. The comment was, 'If you want to break Schwartz said San Pedro did not contribute to the campaign. "What is it that Alex Daoud, who is the underdog candidate for mayor in a city that San Pedro has nothing to do with, what is it that Alex Daoud could do for San Pedro that justify paying tens of thousands of dollars?" Schwartz said. "The answer is nothing and he never paid him." Schwartz said that Daoud had attended San Pedro's last St. Lazarus party, a lavish Dec.

17 bash to which San Pedro invited many judges, politicians and police. "He was invited by Rick Sanchez, a Channel 7 newsman," Schwartz said. "In fact, Mr. Sanchez asked him for a proclamation and he gave it to him." Schwartz said the proclamation lauded St. Lazarus and WAS "a routine proclamation.

Any newsman that calls up and wants one gets one; they have them in stock." Sanchez, who was put on paid leave by WSVN after his name turned up on the tapes, could not be reached for comment. The informant also told police that in June 1985, San Pedro said he was "attempting to bribe members of the state Cabinet in order to obtain a pardon on his felony conviction" for murder conspiracy in 1971. The officials targeted for bribes were Gov. Bob Graham, State Comptroller Gerald Lewis and Education Commissioner Turlington, the affidavit states. Turlington said he gave a deposition to the Dade state attorney's office Thursday.

He told The Herald he is not acquainted with San Pedro and did not attend the governor's daughter's wedding, where the bribe allegedly was to have changed hands. "That's about the most hilarious bit," Turlington said. "I know nothing about that statement or anything about it. It's all totally news to me." Prosecutor Petersen also gave a voluntary statement after his name was mentioned in the transcripts. Petersen said he took and passed a lie detector test at his own expense $500.

"I have never committed any breach of my legal and ethical obligations as a member of the state attorney's office to the benefit of Alberto San Pedro or anyone else," Petersen wrote in a letter to the Metro-Dade Organized Crime Bureau, adding, "Mr. San Pedro does not know me and he is a liar." Petersen, who is on a leave of absence from the state attorney's office to work on a project, is misidentified on the transcripts of a Jan. 10, 1985, conversation as "Melvin Petersen." Pedro said "Melvin Petersen" was "very close to transcripts show. An informant told police that San Pedro said Petersen provided him "with information regarding unspecified criminal cases" and was paid for doing so, 1 the affidavit states. The informant said Petersen had visited San Pedro's house and had given him information about grand jury investigations.

"I've never met the man," Petersen said. "I don't know him from Adam. I've never been to any house in Hialeah in the last 10 years." State Attorney Janet Reno said Kenneth W. Breeze, artist, mathematician By BELINDA BROCKMAN Herald Staff Writer Graphic artist Kenneth Wickliffe Breeze, who fused his twin passions of mathematics and art into a long and diversified career, died Monday of lung cancer. He was 81.

"He was a surprising person in his combined talents," said Mr. Breeze's wife of 49 years, Elizabeth. "I think he had a good life." As a child, Mr. Breeze's Breeze abilities in both Breeze drawing and arithmetic became more and more apparent. "He just had that flair," his wife said.
