Lions slap Howard Payne The Paris News, Oct. 19, 1980 SB By BOB RUN YON News Sports Editor COMMERCE With a large homecoming crowd looking on, East Texas State University celebrated win number five with an easy 2814 victory over the Howard Payne Yellowjackets. Quarterback Wade Wilson threw four touchdown passes and completed 15 of 25 for 333 Wilson passes for 333 yards, four IDs yards as he set a new school record for most yards in a single game. The old record was held by Beckville's Jim Gray, who threw for 325 yards against Southwest Texas State University in 1952. Touting a 4-0 record going into the contest, the Lions looked sluggish as the game began, but still managed to get on the board first when Wilson, a Commerce hit tight end Vic Combs for a 67-yard scoring play.

The PAT failed and ETSU led, 60, with 10:44 left on the cock. In the second quarter, the 'Jackets roared back to take a 7-6 lead with a lot of help coming from the boys across the line. On second and five from the HPU 37, tailback Levi Houston stops SMU 'Newtrickplay' keeps Cougars alive IRVING, Texas (AP)Defending Southwest Conference champion Houston stayed alive in the championship race Saturday thanks to a wild fumble that Cougar coach Bill Yeoman jokingly called his "new trick play" in a 13-11 victoy over Southern Methodist. Lonell Phea, a wide receiver, tracked down the bouncing ball in the SMU end zone for Houston's only touchdown of the game and it proved to be the difference. "I guess you can say we still might be in the (SWC) hunt now," said Yeoman.

"It is certainly a big win, but dagnabit, this team should play a 10-game exhibition season before the regular season starts. "Of course, that fumble play down on the goal was a new trick play we put in for this game." SMU Coach Ron Meyer wasn't very happy about the fumble. "That was the critical play of the game," said Meyer. "You have to give them credit. Overall, they just played a better offensive football game.

It's a tough loss." Houston evened its record at 3-3 for the season and jumped to 2-1 in SWC piay while the Mustangs fell to 4-2 and 1-2. The madcap third quarter play which gave Houston a 10-3 lead it never lost started on a 20-yard run by Terald Clark who fumbled at the SMU 10. Wide receiver Eric Herring knocked the ball forward to where Phea tired tried to pick it up but knocked it into the end zone where he scored. Notre Dame whips Army SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Linebacker Mark Zavagnin pounced on a blocked punt for one touchdown and set up another with a pass interception Saturday to lead fifth-ranked and undefeated Notre Dame to a 30-3 victory over Army.

Jim Stone, Blair Kiel and Ty Barber scored on short runs and Harry Oliver booted a 49-yard field goal as the Irish notched their fifth straight victory of the season and left Army with a 2-3-1 record. Zavagnin recovered a punt blocked by John Krimm in the final minute of the first half to give the Irish a 17-0 lead at intermission. Dave Aucoin's 41-yard field goal early in the third, quarter averted an Army shutout and put the Cadets back in the running. But Bob Crable recovered an Army fumble which led to a touchdown late in the third quarter and Zavagnin's intercepted pass set up still another score early in the fourth quarter before the Irish went to their reserves. (AP) Reserve I-back Craig Johnson rushed for three touchdowns and quarterback Jeff Quinn passed for two more as lOth-ranked Nebraska crushed winless Oklahoma State 48-7 in a Big Eight football clash Saturday. Johnson, subbing for the injured Jarvis Redwine, scored on runs of 3,17 and 1 yards as he rolled up 105 yards in 20 carries before a Nebraska homecoming crowd of 76,021. Oklahoma State's Cowboys, 0-5, scored their lone touchdown following a Nebraska fumble on the Cornhusker 26 early in the second half when quarterback Houston Nutt hit Ron Ingram with a 14-yard scoring strike. After grabbing a 14-0 lead before Oklahoma State's first snap of the ball, Nebraska, 5-1, struggled through the rest of the first half. The defending SWC champion Cougars also got field goals of 39 and 25 yards from David Humphreys in the defensive dominated game that was regionally televised.

After a scoreless first quarter, Humphreys kicked a 39-yard field goal late in the second quarter to give Houston a 3-0 halftime lead. Eddie Garcia's 43-yard field goal tied it before Phea made his alert play. Humphrey's second field goal put the Cougars up 13-3 before SMU came back in the fourth period. SMU quarterback Mike Ford completed on a 61-yard drive including 23 and 13 yarders to Anthony Smith to setup his one-yard sneak. The Cougar defense led by linebacker Steve Bradham intercepted four Ford passes.

Bradham had two including one at midf ield late in the game. Bradham's final interception came after Jared Moore had recovered Clark's fumble at the Mustang one- yard line. SMU drove to its 47 before Bradham made his big play. Morrison took the ball to the 49 in three plays where the 'Jackets had a second and four. HPU got the ball to the 36 on short gainers by fullback Ken Kelso and Morrison, but were held on three downs by the ETSU defenders.

On fourth and inches, a Lion defender got anxious and encroached, giving ETSU a five-yard penalty and the 'Jackets a first down. HPU slowly worked the ball downfield, but on a second and nine from the 11, the Lions were flagged for pass interference at the goal line. Two plays later, Kelso got in from the one with 7:58 on the clock. The PAT gave HPU its lead of the game, 7-6. After the kickoff, Wilson and company took little time in getting the lost touchdown back.

As a matter of fact, it took just 15 seconds. Wilson stepped back in the pocket and found Randy Smith at the 44. Smith took the pass and raced into the endzone. Wilson passed to Combs for the two-point conversion, giving the Lions a 14-7 lead. ETSU's defense again stopped the visitors in their tracks, and Wilson tound himself with possession at the HPU 37.

On third and 12, he hit Smith for a 19-yard gain, then connected with the fleet receiver from Garland for a 16-yard shot that produced the touchdown. In the third quarter, Wilson passed for this final touchdown of the day to Ron Trammell. Expected to go as a high pick in the pro-football draft next year, Wilson passed for his 324th yard when he hit running back Carey Noiel for a nine-yard gain with 1:53 left in the third quarter. With 12:57 Jeft in the game, he hit Mike Littlejohn for a nine-yard gain that pushed him over Gray's mark. The Lions improved their record to 5-0 for the season and 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play.

Howard Payne fell to 1-3-1. ETSU's ranked second in the National Association of Inter-collegiate Athletics, while another undefeated LSC team, Angelo State, is ranked number one. (AP) Former University of Arkansas placekicker Steve Little, 24, remained in critical condition Saturday in a St. Louis Hosptial. Little's car "hydroplaned," skidding 125 feet off Interstate 270 into an exit ramp sign during a rainstorm early Friday in west St. Louis County, authorities said. Little was alone in the car.

A neurosurgeon says the former St. Louis Cardinal is fighting for his life with total paralysis. "It probably Dr. Frank Palazzo said Friday when asked if spinal cord damage suffered earlier in the day by Little in a car accident was permanent. "It's a fracture of the neck, in layman's terms, with compression of the cord," Palazzo said.

"Because of dislocation of the vertebrae, there is also a complication with breathing. It is most unlikely that he will ever regain movement." The clouded prognosis by Palazzo came less than 30 hours after Little was released by St. Louis for "not measuring up to his job." Palazzo said Little suffered a head laceration from a sharp object when thrown into the car's dashboard on the passenger side, with acute angulation of the neck causing the most serious trauma.
