Pittman pointed out "We needed the outside work on our (kick) coverage and our pass defense" time" Pittman was referring to Husky quarterback Sonny Sixkiller who completed 10 of 24 passes for 230 yards Another thing that hurt TCU in the first half was field position Seldom did the Frogs have operating room The Frogs looked better in the second half though "WE STARTED OUT playing passive football Unaggressive Acted like we were afraid we were going to make mistakes" Pittman noted "In the second half I told 'em to get out there and play And they were sharper" Defensive back Lyle Blackwood who picked off a Sixkiller pass and returned it a school record 83 yards to set up TCU's first touchdown called Sixkiller "probably the best quarterback we'll face all year" Blackwood almost broke for a TD on his run but be was finally run out of bounds on the Washington 16 ikeisae fAuz FREDDIE POUNCY BOBBY DAVIS LYLE BLACK WOOD A heavy rain struck just before the opening kickoff and left water standing on the field "The footing wasn't real good" said quarterback Steve Judy who like the other Frogs had never played on a wet artificial surface before "They're probably used to it up here but we aren't I think I'd rather play on wet grass" heavy rains in Fort Worth and Pittman was afraid that the lack of outside work would hurt the Frogs "We made quite a few mistakes" Pittman said "We then broke the completion mark to Pouncy to the 8 and hit the speedster again for the touchdown A two-point try failed but the Frogs had closed the gap to 37-26 Sixkiller changed that with 8:21 left He speared Scott on another long pass to the Frog one and Tony Apostile ran it over for a 44-26 lead Meanwhile both Judy and Marshall had difficulty moving against the Husky defense needing to pass and facing a stiff rush One promising push late in the period came to an end when Steve Patterson fumbled to the Huskies at the Washington 42 The Frogs did blunt a Washington up by another long Cahill punt return at the TCU 20 It ended with a missed field goal And they gave Greg Collins Six-killer's understudy a bad time I THEN WITH 3:34 left to play in he half Harris fumbled a handoff from Steve Judy and the ball popped into the hands of Washington tackle Gordy Guinn A 229-pounder Guinn romped 52 yards down the sideline to score and Washington had a 21-6 lead A little later Judy tied Sammy Baugh's career completion mark but the Frogs couldn't move with time running out and had to punt with 18 seconds showing on the clock Marshall fumbled a high snap fell on the ball and seconds later 7YPEr9itiTERs Members Tarrant County Pawn Brokers Association Richard Mason all made their share of big plays Indiana managed 190 yards in total offense but only 12 first downs The Hoosiers didn't threaten until late in the game moving to the Bear six That move was short-circuited by a Goree interception All the scoring came in the first three minutes of the third quarter In addition to White's 95-yarder which tied the previous Baylor record for kickoff returns Mike Conradt kicked a 21- yard field goal With the Bear passing game having its problems (Si Southall hit only three of 16 for 41 yards and two interceptions) the offensive load was carried by tailback Matthew Williams who picked up 112 yard on 18 carries in addition to catching two passes for 30 yards Frogs were back to 17 points in arrears THEN SIXKILLER struck again After an exchange of punts he moved the Huskies to the Frog 48 before throwing long to Tom Scott who had a mere step on Frog halfback David McGinnis But Scott turned around before McGinnis got the ball at the TCU 5 and went in for the score Washington in high gear led 37-14 and the Frogs had a meager offensive output Also at that point and counting the Washington second quarter field goal with time expired 34 points had been scored in 4:38 At one time in a 28-second period there had been two touchdowns (the kickoff runbacks) one field goal an extra point kick and a two-point pass Then Marshall entered at quarterback against the Huskies' No 2 defensive unit Passing to Pouncy running himself and helped by Peoples' recovery of a Harris fumble on an 11-yard gainer the sophomore took the Frogs 77 yards He scored himself going over standing up from the 6 Marshall's conversion pass was batted down in the end zone and TCU trailed 37- 20 with second quarter although Baylor did reach the Indiana 30 with just over a minute to go after Si Southall hit Matthew Williams with an 18-yard pass However Southall's next pass was intercepted by the Hoosiers' Larry Wright who returned from the 25 to the 37 to kill the mild threat Indiana's deepest penetration in the second quarter was to the Bear 40 Both teams managed only four first downs apiece during the first two quarters BUT THE scoreless deadlock didn't last long into the third quarter MIKE CONRADT booted the extra point 16 seconds into the half and Baylor was ahead 7-0 Two possessions later the Bears were ready to strike again after a 35-yard run by Williams moved the ball to the Indiana 24 Three plays later Southall hit Ron Hanson with an 11-yard pass that carried to the Hoosier 11 But the drive stalled after the Bears moved to the seven So Conradt came back onto the field and kicked a 25-yard field goal to make it 10-0 with 9:03 left in the third quarter Indiana's Mike Fulk recovered a Baylor fumble at the Bear 34 with 4:20 left la the period The liooslers moved to the 17 where a fourth-and-four pass was knocked away at the 10 by Gorell one of many big plays the 200-p ound linebacker turned in during the night Gorce came back in the fourth quarter to partially block a Hoosier punt that traveled only 22 yards A 15-YARD penalty against Indiana on the play gave the Bears possession 20 yards from the Hoosier goal They couldn 't get any closer though and Conradt missed a 37-yard field goal attempt with six minutes to go Indiana took over at the 20 and finally began to move behind reserve Ted AleNulty who passed his club all the way to the Bear six But Al as on and Nunn dropped McNulty for a three-yard loss on first down from that point Sutton knocked down a second-down pass and Mason dropped McNulty for a 10-yard pass on third down Then on fourth down it was that man Gorce again to the rescue picking off McNulty's pass to complete a fantastic defensive
