Net a state fair! But a rank Fake! These are the caption that should have been printed Upon tho big window posters which started pedestrians upon the streets In the eyes, In glaring and flaming red letters, announcing the "Big Automobllo Races." Incidentally, the police are trying to get some trace of Secretary W.

H. Brown, and Treasurer F. W. Floyd, tho chief promoters of the gigantic fake, who departed tho city last night for parts unknown, but are supposed to havs fled to Portland with the big bulk of the gate receipts which amounted to something like $1,000. Complaints have been laid befor? District Attorney John II.

McNary, and Deputy Charles McNary Is searching the statutes for a law under which Brown and Floyd can be prosecuted but the only thing they have been able to find thus far, which will cover the case, Is section 1813 of the code which provides that any person found guilty of gross fraud or cheat against the public under common law Is punishable by Imprisonment In tho state penitentiary for a term of from one to three years. Since tho races were pulled off, In a slipshod and devil-may-care m'anner, principally by the Innocent entries In tho different events, It will bo difficult to prosecute upon this score but the queen contest, proved to be a fraud of the rankest type and the authorities may prosecute upon that ground, if no other more serious charge Is presented, If they can "cotch" the guilty parties. It develops that through tho suspicions of Driver Cushman of the Cole-30, which participated In the races and won the five-mile race, and his watchfulness Brown arfd Floyd were Intercepted In their efforts to make away with all of the money while Interest was centered In the races, when Cushman cornered themi in their room at the Cottage hotel with the loot In their possession and held them Jhere until they had pungled over his $50 premium for winning' the flvc-mlle raco and until H. Hollcnback, of Portland, owner of the Croxton-Cleeton racer which won the 50-mile race, secured $140 of the $200 prize offered In that event. Harry Clay, manager of the Capital Garage and winner of the gentlemen's race, three miles, with his Cole-30, did not get In on the enforced "coughing up" of the cash and he lost his $25 prize.

It a.lso( develops that when Brown anil Floyd rented S. L. S. RO LIFE OF A But for the pluck an presence of mind of Mrs. L.

S. Rowland, who resides on Waller street, In Yew Park, of this city, another tragedy would havo been added to tho list of railroad fatalities that lmve happened within nnd in close proximity of this city tho past two weeks, when she pulled an Intoxicated and dazed tramp from undur the very wheels of a passing freight train south of the Southern Pacific depot about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and saved his life. Mrs, Rowland had noticed the stranger roaming around tho neigh borhood during the aftornoon, and was watching him when ho went out) to try to catch a passing freight, he being a oiUarmed man under tho Influence of liquor, and watched him tho closor. Ho niado a grab at the ladder upon a boxcar, missed his hold, and was struck on tho side of tho head and knocked sensoh.es by Listen Hot Dutch cocoa 'And assorted cakes at Bello's. Savage's old stand. The outside world tees rood outlook In Saltan's future, and ttlietw i'mi hu in locating and lu- MR rooms In tho First National Bank building Brown tendered a check for $10 in payment, drawn on Boise, Idaho, bank, which was bogus but ho was shrewd enough to pun-glo over enough money to pay for these worthless pieces of paper, before he left the town else he would-now be In the tolls of tho law. It was one of tho rankest fakes and failures that was ever perpetrated upon nn Innocent public and the next time that anything of that kind Is attempted la this city, the originators or promoters of tho game will doubtless bo given a wide berth. Some of tho races were pulled off as scheduled but thoy were all tame affairs and were a decided disappointment to the 2,000 or jnoro people who gathered at the course with the expectation of seeing somo good races and some competition In the different events scheduled to take place. After paying their 50 cents per for admittance to the grounds and an additional fco for tho grandstand, tho crowd was kept waiting for a seemingly Interminable period for the races to come off and when something did happen, the people did not know what was going on for there was no announcer, scorer or timekeeper and It was a sort of catch-as-catch-cah affair from start to finish, until the crowd became weary of the delay and utter failure of the whole affair and left In disgust, heaping Imprecations upon tho heads of those responsible for the fake and vowing vengeance If the opportunity ever offered.

Long before the program was finished tho chief promoter of the scheme, W. H. Brown, representing the Inter-Mountain Motor Racing association, disappeared and could not bo found anywhere and the balance of the program was carried out In a hap-hazard manner, without head or management. The 50-mlle event was won by Hollenback's Croxton-Cleeton racer, which was driven the distance by Driver Sprague, In 1:04:33, and second place was won by Chas. V.

Brown's 30-horse touring car, Mar-mon, of Astoria, which, with Driver Martin at tho wheel, made the distance in 1:14. Honeyman's Cole-30 dropped out of the race without completing the first lap, and the big Winton-6 stayed in the race for 37 miles but burst two tires and withdrew The best made for the mile during the race was done by the Croxton-Cleeton racer which rounded the track 1:11 flat, but Its average speed was about 1:13. WLAND SAVES RIPPLED TRAMP the end of the next car, and fell with his head rosting within two Inches of the wheels. Mrs. Rowland rushed out, expecting to find him killed, but when she arrived he began to regain consciousness, and, in his dazed condition, scrambled to his hands and kinoes and would havo crawled under the rapidly moving train and to certain death, but she grabbed him by tho coat tails and held him firmly until the train had passed by, and then pulled him away from the track and out of danger.

Sho then called for tho police to come and tnko care of him, as he was badly cut and bruised about the head whare struck -by tho car, and was wandoring about in a semi-conscious condition when she last saw him. Mrs, Rowland committed a very heroic net, and she was highly complimented and praised for her pluck and prosonce of mind by the nolghbors who saw the affair. t'oniti uaiirai Hsaiu cisritNa? Lahore, India, Sept. 201, Three-fourths of the town of Dera GhazI Khnm, with a population of 30,000, Is under wator today. Two hundred persons aro reported drowned, and the damage to property Is enormous. The river Indus has broken from its banks and Inhabitants of the surrounding country are fleeing to the uplands. Two Methods One Result Tho "Green Goods" man pretends to sell his victim what he wants, but gives him something elco instead.
