owoowios14wrfrooIPleo" I FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM SECTION B-PAGE ONE SUNDAY OCTOBER 1 1972 BASEBALL-OUTDOORS-GOLF FOOTBALL-TENNIS-BOWLING Williams Resigns as Field Boss of Texas Rangers By HAROLD McKINNEY ARLINGTON Ted Williams made it official Saturday Ha will not return next season as the Texas Rangers' field it is the right decision for the club myself and everyone ivolved" Williams said that the Rangers' problems this season they're in last place in the American League West with the worst record in the major leagues was a factor in his decision "Losing is tough especially some of the close games we've lost this year" he said "I've never seen anything like the dearth of runs Winning as a manager is the most exalted feeling you can get but it's tough when you lose" Williams predicted better years ahead for the ranges "I am positive that the club is at its low low point right now" he said "It can go no place but up and from now on it will get better "Next year we need to get a couple of hitters We've got the nucleus of a good pitching staff A lot of good clubs are after pitching so that's the way we might have to go" Williams who has a year remaining on a five-year contract will have no specific duties next season "He can do whatever he wants to do" Short said "He didn't want any titles but Ted said he will do anything I wnnt him to do to make the Rangers a success in the Dallas-Fort Worth area" "I might do some scouting" Williams said "Either at the free agent level or the major league level If I didn't think I could contribute something I would just forget next year Although Short said Williams would be consulted on the naming of his successor evidently the final decision will be made by Short and Burke "Anyone in America who thinks he wants to maage this club should let us know" Short said "First of all we want someone who wants the job That's the most important thing We don't play to actively seek anyone" Short also said the new manager would be allowed to select his own coaches Short denied tha Williams has recommended former Cincinnati and Milkwaukee manager Dave Bristol for the Ranger job "Ted thought Bristol did a good job both at Cincinnati and Milwaukee" Short said "and we've discussed several possibilities but he hasn't recommended Bristol or anyone else" Short said that "anyone in the Ranger organization would have a better chance of getting the job "than someone from outside" He added that he's had two inquiries including one from someone from the Ranger organization evidently Denver Manager Del Wilber "We'll look over those who are interested in the job and make our choice" Short said 'Williams a Hall of Fame slugger with the Boston Red Sox was talked out of retirement by Short when he purchased the Washington Senators and managed four years being named American League manager of the year his first season "If I had to do it again I'd do the same thing" Williams said "It's been a greta experience and I'm thainkful to Bob Short for the opportunity to come back" Burke said that he "was happy Ted is staying with the Organization A man like him should stay in baseball" Turn to Rangers on Page 5 Club owner Bob Short made the announcement "with regret" at an Arlington Stadium press conference prior to the Rangers' game with Chicago adding that Williams would remaig with the club through the 1973 season in an advisory capacity "I will be forever grateful to Ted for returning to baseball and devoting four years to managing" Short said "We are sorry to lose his direction on the field but sympathize with his desire for a less demanding role" Short and general manager Joe Burke said they hoped to name a new manager shortly after the end of the season "It was my decision and mine alone" Williams said "I have personal reasons I think that's all I have to say But I have had a lot of time to think about it and I am convinced that I Mustang al ke Virginia Tech By Last-Second March Dies
