a a a a 12-C Fort Worth STAR TELEGRAM Friday Morning, February 4, 1972 FIVE BREEDS JUDGED Simmental tal Get Biggest Crowd By JAMES E. VANCE Star Telegram Agriculture Writer Judges at the Stock Show put in their biggest day Thursday as three breeds of beef cattle and two dairy breeds moved through the arena. Simmental attracted the biggest crowd as the exotic and big red-and-white animals made their appearance for a second show and a first sale in Fort Worth. "We did not select champions among the 130 entries in the traditional show manner," explained Jerry Moore of Canton, Ohio, president of the American Simmental Association. purpose in the show arena was to evaluate the cattle in six separate groups and for their order i in the sale Saturday night." MOORE SAID that Simmental were evaluated strictly by their performance records rather than by visual appearance.

A panel of judges placed the animals for the sale order. "We don't anticipate Simmental cattle on a show circuit, except as special exhibits, and in carcass contents sanctioned by our association." The breed is a native of Switzerland which spread under various names throughout Europe and made its inroads into the U.S. via Canada. The association opened its fourth annual convention Thursday and will end with a "Simmental Saturday Night Sale" beginning at 6 p.m. in the Stock Show's new judging and sales facility.
