Writer Texas State found itself scoring more but enjoying it less Saturday night as the unbeaten Eagles staggered to a 41-6 victory over the inept Spartans of Tampa University In chalking up their fourth straight victory of the season the Eagles compiled their highest point total since the final game of the 1962 season when they swamped Southern Illinois 55-30 But if there was any joy in the triumph it had to be mellowed by the poor showing of the heretofore potent offense which in this instance didn't put a point on the scoreboard until the team had a 24-0 lead midway of the third period A combination of alert defense and Tampa miscues accounted for all the fireworks until the game was out of reach for the visitors from Florida North Texas Safety 14 vk- played for the big cheese or LIKES FRED'S KNOCK SCHOOL Johnny Swaim the assistant to athletic director Abe Martin is a Taylor-made fan "The thing that impresses you about Fred's teams is the discipline" says Swaim "You know when they go out there they are going to knock heck out of somebody" The day before the game with the Texas freshmen last year Taylor was so tight he vanished "Kept walking around so much he finally had to go home" says a witness "I never saw a coach so wound up He sure gets ready to play" Taylor agrees "Sure I get excited about it" he emphasizes "The day I don't I'm going home for good If you get ready to play and want to win your players are going to start feeling the same way" Despite all this stimulation Taylor compares his position to a junior high or B-team high school coach in some respects OU MUCH IMPROVED BUFFALO NY Boston Patriots put the rush on quarterback Jack Kemp and his Buffalo Bills Saturday night and scored two touchdowns and a pair of field goals for a 20-10 victory over the fading American Football League champions A Buffalo record crowd of 45542 saw Kemp the 1955 AFL player of the year chased all over the backfield by the blitzing Patriots Time and again Kemp's passes mostly of the bomb variety sailed far and wide over his receivers' heads Boston jumped into a three-point lead at 4:31 on Gino Cappelletti's 10-yard field goal A lapse by most of Buffalo's defensive Texas 89 1 yards to 64 in the first half all of the scoring threats were nullifled by two lost fumbles and two intercepted passes And to add injury to insult the Eagles sent Tampa's start- ing quarterback Jesse Kaye to the hospital with a damaged wing just before the intermission 1 His replacement had even 1 less luck having his second pass attempt in the third period swiped by defensive back Tom Price who ran it back 36 yards for the Eagles' second touchdown and a 15-0 lead The defense set up the next North Texas score when end Lee Allen fell on a Tampa fum- to to in 1 see his MEYER DALLAS Well after nine years the boys from up North won't have such a long trip home This was one of the most exciting Texas Oklahoma games I have seen Except for the numerous fumbles in the fourth quarter it was a Jim dandy At that stage it looked like a game of drop the handkerchief But all afternoon the Sooners looked greatly different from last year Bob Warmack the great little field general engineered a 70-yard drive on Oklahoma's first possession scoring himself with a fake off tackle and a slide around end Eddie Hinton was a fine target all afternoon and showed a great pair of hands And those Sooners are a blocking team ANOTHER CROP ANOTHER WINNING NIGHT "It's important sure" he says "but it's sort of like a junior high or B-team coach because you've got new kids every year You have to coach differently than other coaches "You have to prepare them for the varsity but you try to get them ready to win on Wednesday nights too They might as well start winning when they enroll" Last Wednesday Taylor's season began just right a 35-12 decision over the Aggies "Boy that was good" enthused Taylor "I'd rather beat the Aggies than anybody It was a big game to me and not only because 24000 people were here I figured if we won it might stimulate more interest in the Tech game here Saturday night" "Nothing gets to the fans like a winner People will go see a peewee team if it's winning If winning seems to be all Taylor thinks about check the record It's 38-244 and he's working on a six-game streak "There's nothing better" he grinned "but we sure are going to have a tough time with North Texas" Taylor's big wind-up for cloud nine obviously had begun AN IRONIC note was the Oklahoma kicker Mike Vachon He missed his extra point try but kicked four field goals two of them over 40 yards Both teams operated from the formation with men frequently in motion Also they had split ends and slot backs Oklahoma used a defense very similar to the Arkansas defense a five-man line with two inside linebackers and a roving monster man CHARLIE HILLARD FORD LUffilOgHtlgOMO The Appointment of Rutgers Wins BETHLEHEM Pa (AP) Halfback Bryant Mitchell scored two touchdowns and ran
