Section Page 24 Fort Worth Slcn-Telegram Sunday September 13 1992 SWC FOOTBALL No 12 Colorado leaves Baylor reeling 57-38 Second-quarter barrage keeps Bears mnless that "Nobody in the Southwest Conference has that kind of talent except Said Teaff: "I'm very disappointed I don't like being 0-2 I don't like losing at home I don't like having a lousy kicking game I don't like giving up 57 points And I don't like losing to Colorado coach Bill McCartney who we've always played well against" The 57 points were the most scored against the Bears in Waco since a 57-0 loss to Texas in 1914 (following a record 77-0 to Texas loss in 1913) but Teaff said he was encouraged at least that the Bears came back in the second half "When you've gotten yourself in a situation like we did in the second quarter when all of a sudden boom boom boom they've got you reeling you have to come to a decision "If you don't fight back then you will never be a football team And these people fought back and that says something for them It doesn't give you any 'moral victory' or mean a hill of beans to most people but it says something" The day began to turn ominous for the Bears when after a quick fumble recovery Joe overthrew a wide-open receiver and Baylor had to settle fora field goal "We got three and I thought we were in pretty good shape" Joe said And indeed the Bears were until Stewart had time to look over theirdefense "Everything was open" Stewart said Soon he marched Colorado 80 yards to a permanent lead Then in the second quarter Baylor disintegrated After a field goal Stewart capped a 57-yard drive by tossing an alley-oop to 6-foot-1 Charles Johnson who went over the back of 5-10 Michael McFarland to make the catch Next a committee of Buffs chased Joe into his end zone and in the catacombs beneath Floyd Casey Stadium Grant TeafT assumed the aspect of the famed archaeologist searching for the remains of a mythical beast "There's a good football team in here somewhere" he said glancing around hopefully "We just have to find it" Unfortunately the team Baylor trotted out to meet 12th-ranked Colorado yesterday looked a lot like a sitting duck and by day's end it was indeed shot full of holes as the Buffs rolled to a 57-38 victory in a game that began to resemble your average Saturday in the Western Athletic Conference When it was over the teams had combined for 95 points and 880 yards which is a bit misleading since the Bears (0-2) trailed 33-3 at one point and Colorado (2-0) played the entire second half with its backup quarterback The starter Kordell Stewart hit 16 of 17 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns before retiring at halftime with a "mid-foot sprain" It turned out to be the Bears' best defensive ploy of the game Not that it brought any sort of salvation Backup Duke Tobin threw for an additional 154 yards and stretched the lead back to comfortable proportions after Baylor had chopped it to 36-24 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter That surge came through a succession of bombs from JJ Joe whose six completions were worth 262 yards But after a 26-point Colorado explosion in the second quarter the Bears were never in this one "They just came out here on our home turf and took it from us" said Joe who opened in a 1 -for-12 funk and finished with six hits in 20 tries "They showed everyone why they're ranked No 1 2" make it 33-3 Notes At least one Baylor student was probably happy with the outcome Marie McCartney a camera operator with KWTX-TV in Waco who is Bill McCartney's son After averaging 437 yards per completion Joe said "I think we would have been better off if our medium game had worked a little better since we only hit 6 of 20 The 95 total points was the most scored in Floyd Casey Stadium completely "After surgery" he added "Dr Bert Zarins was even more sure I'll be able to return It was good to hear that" That's about the only good news Dykes has gotten the last few months In July his doctors and trainers felt he'd recovered enough from last year's knee fracture to participate in a light preseason workout but then it happened again: "I stepped and threw the ball When I landed it broke right in two again" Doctors opened the knee by peeling apart the old stitches reattached torn tendons and put what was left of the kneecap back together The operation had Dykes hobbling around on crutches at first but now he's able to limp unassisted He says it hurts only when he tries strenuous exercise The adversity didn't end with the injury Last month while Dykes was still on crutches three men with guns entered his house and held him up his brother and three others one of whom was 6 years old "They asked for money but I don't keep a lot of cash on me" Dykes recalled "Then one guy said 'Where's your I told him They took necklaces bracelets and earrings and my BMW "I've never been so scared in my whole life" the beefy football player added "You hear how you can knock the gun away or run but when it actually happens everything stops your life is in someone else's hands who can end it" As a igh school senior he was the nation's most sought-after football player pursued by major league baseball scouts and eyed by basketball recruiters He ended up at Oklahoma State catching footballs and pitching baseballs That's also when his troubles began Oklahoma State wanted Dykes so badly that it violated NCAA recruiting rules to land him which landed the football program a three-year probation and put Dykes in the awkward position of pointing fingers at recruiters there and elsewhere in return for the NCAA's promise of limited immunity By David Boclajr Fori Worth Sur-Telefram DALLAS North Texas saw its opportunity to change the football game After three quarters of clinging to SMU's shirttail the Eagles finally were poised for their moment Trailing 21-14 and facing a fourth-and-oneon theSMU 1 1 with 15 minutes remaining UNT decided not to kick the field goal Quarterback Mitch Maher handed off to Terrance Brown who had the option of going up the middle or bouncing outside But before he could blink SMU middle linebacker Bill Kiely laid him out The Mustangs' offense responded with a 1 3-play drive that exhausted more than six minutes Kevin Shep-ard capped it with a 1-yard dive for his second touchdown of the day sealing SMU's 28-14 victory before 1 0200 at Ownby Stadium "I don't ever remember coaching a game where one play meant so much" UNT coach Dennis Parker said "After that their offense didn't do so much to move the ball as our defense suffered a letdown" Parker said he lacked confidence in his team's ability to convert a field goal The Eagles (1-1) were using a backup snapper on kicks because Mike Kale who regularly handles that task was grabbing passes Where long empty days offer too much time to contemplate back-to-back knee injuries bar brawls and armed break-ins And where given all that has gone wrong Dykes often wonders whether the battle is still worth it "Sometimes I say that maybe if I'd played baseball instead maybe I wouldn't have had all this happen to me" the 6-foot-4-inch 214-pound receiver said in an interview at his home Friday the first time since he refractured his knee in July that he has felt up to publicly discussing his troubles "But this is what I do these are things I have to suffer through and I think in the end it will be worth it "I think somewhere down the line I'll be able to look back and say these things really changed me made me stronger" What about reports that his latest injury is
