for the Bears after flags kept the Bulldogs from achieving any kind of field position in the fourth quarter They would finish with 13 of them for 119 yards on the night Joe another former Lamar star led Baylor on its final drive which covered nine plays in four minutes Calmly Weir booted through his last score then waited Starting from its 35 Tech drove to the Baylor 35 on three Hughes passes and a Cooper run His legs cramping again Hughes was spelled by Ferguson whose one and last toss was good Grant Teaff said "They just didn't execute on the big plays We couldn't make the plays when we needed to "We thought we had this one" Especially after Tech's Hughes went down with leg cramps late in the third period Ferguson replaced him and led the Bulldogs to the go-ahead score with a 12-play drive Cooper blasted in from the 4 fora 7- 6 lead Herman Piete recovered Baylor's only gaffe of the game a Joe fumble on the next possession The Bulldogs got to the Baylor 9 before the Bears' defense stiffened Drops by Lee Bruderer Albert Fontenot and Matthew Pearson pushed the Bull swamp NDIVIDUALISTATISTICSiiiniiin Baylor went from hero to nobody Again The former Lamar High School star had spent most of his three years at Baylor as a squad-team quarterback nothing more than meat for the first-team defenses All the while he had watched Baylor's kicking game struggle Last night he was on his way to changing all that The last of Weir's kicks came with 1:34 to play It proved enough time for Hughes Ferguson and Henry to work a little magic "A game like this gives you a stomach ache" said Weir a fifth-year senior "I wanted to do the job tonight and I felt good about the way I kicked "But when you lose the game it doesn't mean much" In Tech Baylor faced an independent only four seasons into Division I play If the Bears had thought the Bulldogs were patsies entering this game they came away thinking differently afterward Much differently JJ Joe and the Bears' offense came close but couldn't reverse the misfortunes of a defense susceptible across the middle and that's how the Bulldogs struck down the stretch Tech's passing game dwarfed the Bears' 244 to 44 with I 68 yards on 10-of-20 passing in the second half "We've got a bunch of guys who are hurting tonight" Baylor coach 1" Rushing Vis A Yds Avg tg ID NM Clay 10 -26 -26 4 0 Case Modkins 16 135 84 80 1 WOliVer Oglesby 6 WACO Trey Weir had been waiting years for the moment And when it came it was snatched away Louisiana Tech kicker Chris Boniol had something to prove too Upstaged by Weir all game after he had missed two attempts Boniol finally connected from 30 yards out to give the Bulldogs a last-gasp 10-9 upset victory last night before 33434 at Floyd Casey Stadium The Bulldogs rallied from a 6-0 halftime deficit behind runner Jason Cooper and quarterbacks Sam Hughes and Aaron Ferguson Cooper ran 26 times for 87 yards his thrusts paving the way for passes to Corey Parham (seven catches 106 yards) and the one that made the difference to receiver John Henry With three seconds remaining Henry snared Ferguson's pass in-bounds in front of Keith Caldwell at the Baylor 13 setting up Boniol's shot at redemption "It has to rank as one of the better wins in the history of our program" said Tech coach Joe Raymond Peace after the Bulldogs extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games "We believe it'll help take us to the next level It's our first win ever against a Southwest Conference team" Weir who had blasted field goals from 41 39 and 30 yards out for TCU From Page 1 once "I don't think we're going to lay down and die because we lost one game" Clay said "Evidently we have a lot of work to do" Modkins scored TCU's only touchdown on a career-long 80-yard scamper in the first quarter on his way to 140 yards on 16 carries Shipley caught five passes for 84 yards the two accounting for 224 of the Frogs' 314 yards total offense TCU had two touchdowns called back A holding penalty wiped out a nice 71-yard run by Modkins with a screen pass five minutes into the second half Wide receiver Kyle McPherson was flagged for offensive interference pushing off a defender before catching what would have been a 55-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter New Mexico tailback Wendell Oliver shredded TCU's defense for 142 yards on 33 trips Quarterback Stoney Case completed 12 of 21 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns including a two-point conversion Sullivan left himself open for question with a strategical decision that backfired on the first play of the fourth quarter TCU trailed 11-7 The Frogs had just marched from their 14 in the most sustained drive of the night in 16 plays Facing a fourth-and-two situation at the Lobos' 5 Sullivan disdained a field-goal try that would have cut the lead to one He sent Modkins toward the right side of the line from a deep set in the I formation New Mexico linebacker Tuli Mateialona led a weakside charge that dropped Modkins for a 3-yard loss New Mexico took over and drove 92 yards in nine plays Case hitting wide receiver Turhon O'Bannon for a 42-yard touchdown pass with in the game "We'd been running the ball pretty successfully all night" Sullivan said "1 felt like in that situation 912 minutes to go we had to score twice Other than Curtis' long run and the ones we had called back that was the closest we had been turn there was crucial" said offensive coordinator Bob Toledo Especially after ASA held LSU and responded with an 80-yard march to provide a 31-14 cushion over the final 5:14 LSU finished with 388 yards total offense but 79 came on an after-thefact touchdown drive in the waning moments and 76 came on a broken-play run by freshman Robert Davis Afterward LSU coach Curley Hallman said his team "got defeated in the mental game That's coaching" The Aggies figure they'll take them any way they can especially in a stadium nicknamed "Death Valley" that has been a death trap for Aggies' dreams in past seasons "When you're contending to be the best it's like climbing a ladder" ICU ints-yanis 7-295 4 Peg Pun1 421 eal retum yardage 48 Pum returns-yards 1-2 Kickoff returns-yards 240
