The lyrics meant absolutely nothing But of course they are the lyrics you still hear today and probably have never questioned The real lyric was never written because Youmans and Caesar went to a party at Gertrude Lawrence's house that night everyone kept singing the new song with the dummy lyrics and Max Dreyfus published it immediately as "Tea for Two" Marks passed along Dreyfus' words for the benefit of would-be songwriters: "Never analyze a lyric Lyrics don't need a PhD hanging on them" MELODY HANG-UP BLOWS HIS HAND Dorothy Fields the famed lyricist used to blow her stack at Sigmund Romberg because Romberg was so wrapped up in his melodies he never paid any attention to the efforts of the lyric writer "Dorothy was kibitzing a bridge game in Hollywood" Marks recalled "in which Romberg and Jerome Kern were partners Romberg had the makings of a slain-bid if only he could locate a missing ace Kern his partner had the ace and little in his hand Kern blatantly tried to signal this fact to Romberg" Kern began singing aloud one of Romberg's most famous songs: "One alone de-dum-de-dum Everybody in the room caught the cheating except Romberg He under-bid the hand and they didn't get credit for the slam Kern was furious Dorothy Fields told Marks He stormed at Romberg: "Why you hard-headed Dutchman didn't you get my signal?
