THE PARIS NEWS, PARIS, TEXAS THURSDAY AFTERNOON, JUNE 26, 1941 Texan Leads Brain Team, Qualifying For B.A. In 20 Months Four More Years Of Study Remain in Unique Oglethorpe Experiment; Rigid Rules Keynote American youths, led by a Texan, have just finished the first lap of a unique educational qualifying for four-year bachelor of arts degrees in less than 20 months. They face four more years of study which Dr. Thornwell Jacobs, President of Oglethorpe University believes will make them best educated college men f.ver to graduate from an American Marshall Asher, Athens, Texas, led the brain team with an average of 95. The other five and their scholastic averages are: Edgar Vallette, Shreveport, 94; John Goldthwait, Pittsburgh, 93; Frederick Goss, Proctor, 90; John Meacham, Scooba, 39: Keith Lane, Mountainair, N.

Technically that is the benefit that 1 have received from my work as part of the Exceptional Experiment of Dr. Thornwell Jacobs, president of Oglethorpe University. However, as I will attempt to explain, I consider this only part of my gain from my experience of the past two years and NOT the most important part, State-Wide Contest In the summer following my graduation from high school, I entered a state-wide contest for a six-year scholarship to Oglethorpe and won seecond place as a result of a comprehensive set of examinations covering ail subjects taught in high school. About the middle of September I was notified to report to Oglethorpe to replace a member of the experiment who had NOT remained there. I got to school a week lats and met ten other boys who were there for the experiment First I was notified of the conditions governing my scholarship.

I was guaranteed my room, board and regular school fees if I would follow a set of instructions necessary to the fulfillment and success of the experiment. The most important of these were that I buy all my books and keep them, that I attend each Sunday a different church to foe designated by Dr. Jacobs, that I not smoke, drink liquor, gamble or swear, that I remain in my room every evening 1 except Saturday for the purpose of preparing my next day's lessons, and that I follow a daily schedule of living with time allotted for classes, meals, exercise, reading the library, study and sleep. Then I was told that the education that I was to receive would include every subject taught in the university and would take six years of study at 11 months a year. And probably the most important thing 1 was told was that I would take twice the load of the average student and be expected to make an average of 00 or better.

Prove Time Wasted These conditions were necessary to make possible the experiment which was designed to prove that the college student today is wasting half his time and that 1C he was removed from the country club activities of the modern college he could do twice the work he is now doing. And so we 11 boys went to work to try the experiment. We were all far from home, strangers to each other, and facing a rather difficult and bewildering task. However, under the lead- nrship of our "Don," Frederick Coss of Proctor, we soon got acquainted and down to our work, Thai first semester ive carried 26 hours including astronomy, Latin, Greek, jrcolofry, mathematics, ancient history, history and appreciation of music, old Testament mythology, and 'cosmic history. These courses came in our first year according to Dr.

Jacobs' plan that, we take the subjects from year to year in their natur- nl chronological order. In order that we might to a certain extent unify these we also took cosmic history, a subject usually limited to juniors and At tiie present time we have Tan-owed down to six as the result of boys dropping out for different reasons. But we six are going strong and have proven first step of the experiment. Now remains to be seen what our extensive education will mean to us. Will Teach Classes In order to make it more practical and concrete, each year from now on each of us will tench class in the university for the experience and the mastery if the subject.

The idea is that we master each course so well hat we bo able to teach it. At he end of our six years, and N'OT until then, we will be given BEAT THE mT this summer with Sunshine Krispy Crackers! it easy! And Sunshine Krispy Crackers will help you do it! These crisp, crunchy, flavorful crackers make refreshing hot-weather dishes easy to and make them taste much better, too. Try a packags. Prove it for yourself! Studious Marshal Asher, of Texas, has finished the first lap of an educational experiment at Oglethorpe University, qualifying for a four- year Bachelor of Arts degree in. less than 20 months.

He led five other students, survivo.rs of an 11-man brain team, with an average of 95. The youths face four more years of study which Dr. Thornwell Jacobs, president of Oglethorpe University, believes will make them the best college trained men ever to graduate from an American institution. the degree of bachelor of arts, the master of arcs, and a special degree for this extensive, the doctor of arts and sciences. As I said, we are going strong and the reasons for this are more than just the view of a very good education.

The attendant advantages and gains are just as powerful and maybe more attractive force. By that I mean first the fellowship that has grown between us which, as a result of almost constant association, is very close and very strong. Also we have enjoyed and profited from our association with other members of our classes, which, though limited by our schedule, has been most plcsssnt. Share Social Activities We have been able to enter into the intramural activities of the school and take part in a good share of the social activities. And in my opinion there are some more or less intangible gains that I have acquired as a result of my participation in the experiment which the college student does NOT usually get and which I value on par with my education.

Among these arc such things, as the order in xvhich I am taking my courses and the fact that they arc planned by an experienced person and will avoid the usual errors of the hil-or-miss planning. Also have been able to learn to evaluate time as a result of my minute schedule and have been able to form habits which otherwise would have possibly been discarded. I have been required to keep my books and build up a library, a thing which NO college student does and which every college graduate wishes he had done. But the thing that I value most as my profit of my experience of the past two years has been the gradual formation of a sound and happy philosophy of life as result of my study oC different religions and as result of the courses I have taken. I think our experiment has been and will be a success and regardless of its effect on American education I am looking forward to the seventh year so that I might further prove it when I leave school.

Democracy And Communism BERLIN fJP) German press drew parallels between Democracy and Communism in comment Wednesday on President Roosevelt's offer of United States aid for Soviet Russia. "There is very little difference between the statesmanship of Roosevelt and Stalin," declared the Boersen Zeitung. "Plutocracy and Bolshevism come from the same Jewish root," the Berlin financial newspaper added. "They are only two different methods of reaching the same anti-social objectives. President Roosevelt's promise to help Moscow has made this fact clear before the eyes of the world." See End to Red-Inspired Strikes WASHINGTON.

Defense officials predicted Wednesday that one by-product of the Husso-Ger- man war would be an end to Communist-inspired strikes in United States defense industries. Communist leaders, these officials said, must now conceive their interests to lie with the opponents of Germany, whereas until the Nazi thrust into Russia last week- Lets The Hairs Fall Where They May W.
