New Bedford at Salem. general approval by the fans of Boston. There does not appear to be so much regret over the transfer of Leonard, whose seeming haste to get into the shipbuilding business early In the war was not regarded as quite the thing. Lewis and Shore, however, are very popular with the Boston baseball pmuic, especially Lewis, who has betn with the Red Sox for a long time and was almost Idolized here. Shore also has always been regarded as one of the clubs best pitchers.

Both are strictly first-class workmen, and It will be difficult for any newcomers to fill their places in the hearts of the ians. Walters, being a clever backstop, will heip tl.e Boston club considerably In the catching department, where a little more strength will not come amiss. Caldwell and Love are good pitchers, but are not in the same class, as far as ability goes, with either Shoie or Leonard and the former has in time3 gone by been somewhat erratic as to reliability for a complete season. Gilhooley is a clever baseball pla -er who has been Interrupted In hi-development by Injuries. He is a brainy player rather than a performer, either in the field or at bat.

wsv FORK, Dec. 19 In tfie first big transaction since the signing of the armistice the Yankees yesterday obtained Outfielder Duffy Lewis and Pitchers Ernie Shore and Dutch Leonard from the Boston Red Sox In exchange for Pitchers Ray Caldwell and Edward Love, Catcher Albert Walters, Outfielder Frank Gil-hooley and a cash consideration. The check turned over to the Boston club was for no mean figure. It was said to be for 115,000. The deal one of the biggest In which the Yankees ever figured, was closed yesterday at a conference in the New York American League office.

Present were Jacob Ruppert, Harry Frazee, Miller Huggins and Ed Barrow, presidents and managers of the clubs involve The deal had been hanging fire for some time. Huggins suggested it to Barrow a few days before the armistice was signed. It was carried out to Chicago where only the cash stipulation held it up. Rupperts original offer called for 510,000, but Frazee induced him to raise it. The Yankee officials were delighted when the deal was completed.

Huggins is to be congratulated for swinging It, said Col. Ruppert. It is a great deal for the Yankees and strengthens us In our weakest departments. It makes the Yankees look like a real ball club. The open season for managers Is now on.

The first killing was made when Pat Moran was separated from his job as pilot of the Phillies. It Is thought that the hunting will be good this season. The woods are full of game. The rumor will not down that Lee Fohl of the Cleveland Tribe Is slated to retire, with that well known fence buster, Tris Speaker, as his successor. George Stallings has not accomplished anythin with the Braves since Fred Mitchell left his team.

The wise ones are won ring-If he is not due to go. Boston also has another candidate for the game bag. If Jack Barry obtains his release from the navy, it would not be surprising if he resumed his former place as head of the Red Sox, with Ed Barrow returning to the International league as president. Clarence Rowland, leader of the erstwhile champion White Sox, made a pitiful showing last year. He may get another chance.

And the biggest game of all, our old friend Muggsy" McGraw, is reported ready to bag. The story Is that he will succeed Garry Herrmann as president of the Cincinnati club with Pat Moran as manager. If this deal goes through, Christy Mathewson, now the manager of the Reds, would also find himself in the magnates game bag. Still, fans, Its possible that Matty will not stay dead, and the opening game might find him at the head ot the Giants, for Mattys popularity in Giantland is even greater than NEW BEDFORD 10, LOWELL 1. Justice Geig-ench in the Supreme court here yesterday upheld a three-year contract between Jack Dempsey, heavyweight pugilist, and John Relsler. giving to the latter exclusive control of Dempseys boxing contests and exhibitions. Reisler brought suit to compel per formance of the contract on Dempseys part. Denying a motion by the fighter's counsel to dismiss tha, complaint, the court held that the agreement, under which Dempsey was to appear exclusively under Relslers management until December, 1919, was legal, inasmuch as it was made when boxing and sparring contests were legal in New Yoric, If. conducted under the rules of the State Athletic association.

Reisler charged that Dempsey had refused to live up to his part of the contract. Justice Geigerich allowed the fighter 20 days to file an answer to the, complaint GOLFER DUNCAN HURT. NEW YORK, Dec. 19. In commenting on the report to the effect that the four British golfers Vardon, Braid.
