It seems to favor rye crops. It forms hard black or dark purple structures, replacing the cereal kernels. When they fall to the ground, they produce stalked clubs that" eject air-borne spores. The wind scatters the spores and new plants are infected. Ergot growth can be checked by mowing down grasses in the vicinity of the cereal fields, cleaning the seed and rotating crops. Ergot also caused a disease known as ergotism. It assumed epidemic form in the Middle Ages and attacked humans and cattle. It was a severe disease, accompanied by a high fever and skin inflammation. It was also called St. Anthony's Fire. This disease has practically disappeared because of more sanitary methods of handling grain. Powerful drugs have been made from ergot and they have been found valuable in obstetrics and in the treatment of migraine headaches. 5-29 (Gwendolyn Capers of Charleston, S.C., wins a prize for this question.
