Scott said Oliver was activated May 21 and went to the bullpen He has pitched two innings twice including an appearance last Saturday when he allowed two hits and struck out two Scott who attended the game said Oliver threw between 88 and 90 mph "He had good velocity and movement" Scott said Oliver will remain in the bullpen to build up arm strength and stamina until mid-July then return to the rotation "He's quite capable of having a strong second half" Scott said If he does the Rangers could have another pitching prospect one who despite his four seasons as a professional is just 21 years old "It's real encouraging" Scott said BY SIMON GONZALEZ Fort Wonh Star-Telegram The Texas Rangers appear to have found a new pitching prospect in the guise ofan old prospect Darren Oliver once considered one of the shining stars of the Rangers' minor-league system but sidelined the past two years by injuries is back He has pitched nine innings in five appearances at Port Charlotte allowed five hits and eight walks (two intentional) and struck put 1 1 The numbers might not be impressive at first glance but they are encouraging considering how far Oliver has come The Rangers had high hopes for Oliver a left-handed pitcher when they drafted him in the third round of the 1988 draft out of Rio Linda (Calif) High School It appeared to be a good choice when Oliver went 5-1 with a 215 earned-run average for Gulf Coast in 1988 He allowed 39 hits in 5413 innings and led all Rangers rookie-league pitchers with 59 strikeouts He didn't have many problems making the transition to Class A also are beginning to attract attention even if they aren't exactly kids and they're not coming back from injuries Carman a 32-year-old left-hander is trying to come back from near oblivion Carman was released by the Kansas City Royals organization last year after a nine-year major-league career spent mostly with the Philadelphia He signed a Triple-A contract with the Rangers but was released in spring training because the club had no plans for him at Texas or Triple-A Oklahoma City He asked for another chance and agreed to go to Tulsa (Double A) Carman got off to a slow start but has improved lately He has pitched 14 innings in his last two starts allowing five hits one earned run no walks and striking out six He is 2-3 but his ERA is down to 288 He is not likely to be the next minor-league pitcher called up to Texas but he could be promoted to Oklahoma City in the next month or two "Some of that success is because af his experience and because he is Briefly Oklahoma City shortstopoutfielder Keith Miller has hit in 23 of his past 25 games and is batting 317 overall Tulsa won nine of 12 games on a just-completed homestand to improve to 23-24 Third baseman Jose Oliva went 10 for 21 in the past six games with two homers and nine runs batted in He is hitting 295 and is fourth in the Texas League with 29 RBI Tulsa leads the Texas League with 42 homers Catcher John Russell is fourth individually with nine and Oliva and Kevin Belcher are tied for fifth with eight each Steve Balboni Monty Fariss and Chuck Jack- son hit homers in consecutive at-bats for Oklahoma City last Sunday but they haven't showed up in the stats yet The game was suspended by rain in the fifth inning and will be resumed June 17 Gastonia outfielder Ken Powell has three homers and nine RBI in his past six games Carmen Burns Impressive Oliver is not the only comeback kid in the farm system Don Carman and Todd Burns MINOR-LEAGUE AVERAGES Penguins overcome adversity to retain crown Celebration gets out of hand leads to arrest of two men 1 1 1 1 1 after trailing by three goals Lemieux also led the Penguins' penalty-killing unit as Pittsburgh killed off 15 of 16 power plays What made Lemieux's perform- ance all the more remarkable was that he was playing with a bad back in addition to the broken hand a souvenir of Adam Graves' slash in the second-round series with the Rangers In their own ways Gretzky Mess- ier and Hull brought individual excitement to their teams this season But it was ultimately apparent that Lemieux's supporting cast was better than any of those other superstars This season the Penguins were a team that could win any number of ways and they gave a clinic to the Blackhawks in the finals Chicago had come into the championship series with the best defensive record in the playoffs Yet it was the Penguins' so-called "no-name" defense that outplayed Chicago in the clutch When they have a mind to no one in hockey defends a lead like the Penguins Witness Game 3 of the finals when Kevin Stevens scored in the first five minutes and the Penguins went on to a 1-0 victory Witness Game 4 when the Penguins clung to a one-goal lead for nearly nine minutes of the third period When the Blackhawks decided to open up their offense in Game 4 the Penguins simply went with the flow And once they had enough goals to win they simply shut the Black-hawks down The Associated Press CHICAGO The Los Angeles Kings couldn't do it with Wayne Gretzky Ditto the New York Rangers with Mark Messier Same for the St Louis Blues with Brett Hull The Pittsburgh Penguins and Mario Lemieux That's another story It was also a story full of adversity Their coach died of brain cancer they lost several key players at crucial times to injury and occasionally they even lost motivation They ultimately found the way to win a second consecutive Stanley Cup "I think everything we've been through kept us together" goaltender Tom Barrasso asaid With their series-clinching 6-5 victory against the Chicago Black-hawks on Monday night a record-tying 1 I th consecutive playoff victory the Penguins proved they were one of hockey's most versatile teams And one of the closest "We stuck together and that's why we've been successful" Barrasso said "Our desire and committment was unbelievable this year That's why we won" It didn't hurt that the Penguins had the world's greatest player Lemieux who scored a playoff-leading 34 points despite missing six of his team's 21 games with a broken hand won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP for the second consecutive year If any series could be a microcosm for Lemieux it was the finals when Who's on first Oklahoma City first baseman Rob Maurer had to leave the game May 26 because of the stomach flu The flu was making its rounds with the 89ers and between that and an assortment of injuries manager Tommy Thompson had no position players available So he told relief pitcher Steve Fireovid to grab a glove Fireovid who made the Rangers in spring training but was later demoted plugged the hole well He treatment Kudrav's brother Daniel 20 also was charged with inciting a riot Police made 22 alcohol-related arrests near Greater Pittsburgh International Airport where euphoric fans gathered to greet the Penguins who arrived about 4 am in a remote area closed to the public The team and Allegheny County police had asked fans to stay away from the airport where a fan died in a fall and at least 20000 fans greeted the team after the 1991 victory in Minneapolis The beefed-up security was in response to last year's celebration which left some Penguins players fearing for their safety after fans rocked their bus at the airport Last year's victory came on a Saturday night during the Memorial Day weekend leading to the huge rowdy crowds The team scheduled a victory party for noon tomorrow in Three Rivers Stadium points as Chicago's top line of Jeremy Roenick Steve Larmer and Michel Goulet combined Two of Lemieux's goals came in the first game of the series to help the Penguins rally for a 54 victory mated by Creighton and Texas Pool a left-handed pitcher finished the regular season with an 8-3 record and a 301 earned-run average "He had some real good outings this year so 1 thought there might have been an opportunity for him to get drafted" UTA coach Butch McBroom said "He's a left-hander with a real good breaking pitch and we know the demands there are for left-handers" Pool graduated from Nederland High School in 1988 where he Gastonia the next season He was 8- 7 with a 316 ERA in 23 starts He pitched 12213 innings allowed 86 hits and struck out 108 But in 1990 Oliver devoloped shoulder problems He pitched just eight innings in stints with Gulf Coast and Gastonia and managed just eight innings again last season at Port Charlotte He had surgery to repair a torn muscle in his left shoulder and began a rehabilitation program not just for the injured shoulder but also to restore strength in the arm and left side Tulsa lining 28 WO S8 Awl Shave 149 24 49 10 0 213 3329 Dm 149 22 44 9 1 8 29 0295 Grey 154204110 2 111 1266 Huise 149 14 39 6 1 the Yankess were expected at his apartment late last night to starred on the school's baseball and football teams He pitched at Panola Junior College for two years and attended UTA the past two seasons Pool said Yankees officials want him to report to Tampa Fla on Tuesday to clear up some unfinished business with their organization Then he has to report to the Yankees' Class A farm team in
