FRIDAY JUNE 2 1922 SEQUOYAH COUNTY DEMOCRAT BORN 1862 DIED 1922 to be thrown to the ground posed to the sunlight under greater heat conditions than in fields not properly cultivated The Bureau of Entomology strongly advises three consecutive sprays four days apart the calcium arsenate in a dust form localities where experiments with the calcium arsenate sprays have been conducted It is inferred by the bureau that in this state where cotton makes a bale to the acre in case the boll weevil is eliminated the dusting methods should be inaugurated It has also been later inferred by the bureau that where cotton may make a half bale per acre the poison treatment might be given We are not advising this treatment in Oklahoma as being effective sine it has not been thoroughly tried out here under our dimatie conditions We do not disapprove however of its use plants where they would be protected from the hot southwest winds where practical Now since they ire set the question arises as tq the best way In which Jo care for them Assuming that the plants were set in four or five foot rows and about two feet apart in the row the next step should be to stake and prune them in order to develop early fruit They may be pruned to one or two stems naturally in this case the original or main stem would be left and the first strong branch tha develops -All the other branches which arise in the axles of the leaves of these two branches should be kept pinched out TOMATOES By MOORING Horticulturist A A Collage The tomato is one of the most pop tiler Vegetables grown in the home garden or even commercially In this -state there are a number of obstacles to contend with in order to grow them successfully In the first place in the central and western parts of the state very fro -quently the tomato plants grow vigorously but fail to set as much fruit as they should especially is this true during hot dry windy weather In a previous article attention was called to the importance of setting lowing amounts of milk per day can profitably be fed grain aa indicated: 20 pounds milk 3 pounds grain 30 pounds milk 5 Vi grain 40 pounds milk 8 pounds grain Holstein cows: 25 pounds milk 3 pounds grain 35 pounds milk 5 pounds grain 46 pounds milk 9 pounds grain BOLL WEEVIL ON JOB EARLY CULTIVATION MAY CHECK HIM By SANBORN Entomologist A College On the 15th of May County Agent Dunlap at Durant requested me to make a personal investigation of boll weevil conditions in Bryan county -Previous to this time boll weevils had been coming in to the entomological department of the A and College indicating that the weevils were issuing from their hibernation quarters generally throughout the southeastern quarter of the state and more particularly in a sort of a triangular area the apex of which was Okemah and the base in this state the Red river 1 During the investigation near Du-ran( and since that time many questions have been asked pertaining to the present status and future prospects of a cotton crop from the standpoint of boll weevil conditions Specimens of boll weevils received at this College reports from various county agents and personal investigation in connection with general inquiries enable me to give answers to many questions that appear to be in the minds of persons interested in cotton culture There are more boll weevils present in the cotton fields of the area above mentioned this year than perhaps at any time in the history of the boll weevil in thi3 state There appear to be no more than have been present in some of the infested areas of Texas In previous years where fairly good crops have been made The weevils sem to be more numerous at this time than they will appear to be a little later notwithstanding the fact that more will appear lat- Tomatoes pruned and kept tied to an individual stake should make earlier larger and more uniform fruit but not as laVge a yield probably as where they are not pruned quite so closely This pruning and staking will permit of cultivation throughout the entire growing season In tieing the strings should be knotted tight to the stake and loose around the stem of the plant Any material that will not cut such as two-ply jute or pieces of rags tom into strips will be suitable to tie the plants to the stakes Another advantage of this kind of training is that the fruit can be readily harvested without tramping on the vine FEEDING DAIRY COWS By A BEAR A and College The requirements of a good dairy ration are: 1 It must be balanced 2 It should be palatable 3 It must be laxative 4 It should be sufficiently bulky It should contain a variety of feeds 6 It must be adapted for milk production 7 It should be of lowest possible cost In order to feed cows economically it is essential that the roughage be produced on the farm Home grown feeds cost If ss than If purchased Many farms can also produce some grain feeds I A good cow will require the following feed for a year: 4 tons silage 1 1-2 tons legume alfalfa cowpeas or pea-nue 1 ton sudan sorghum or kafir fed green when pastures are dry or an extra ton of silage provided for the dry season 1 acre wheat oats or rye for winter pasture Grain Ration 700 pounds com kafir or barley chop 400 pounds cottonseed meal or peanut meal 200 pounds wheat bran (Some ground oats can be substituted if desired or the amount of bran increased depending upon the roughage available) Heavy milk producers may need some grain even when on a good grass pasture A Jersey cow giving the fol $365 IN PRIZES FOR BEST RHYMES er since all do not emerge from their hibernating quarters at one time Furthermore as the rotton foliage develops the weevils will become less conspicuous on account of an Increased amount of food and protection Experiments performed in Texas by boll weevil experts during the early days of the boll weevil infestation proved that the poisoning of cotton early in the season had little or no effect as a control The weevils now present will remain until after the squares begin to appear The suestion is frequently asked as to whether the present brood of adult weevils can remain until time for laying their eggs in the squares since it is a fact that they will lay their eggs in no other place There is no reason why the weevils now present can not remain until the squares appear in which the next brood
