Fort Worth STAR-TELEGRAM 34 THURSDAY IYINING FFIRLIARY 13 11St a 0 It's No Bore to Tangle With Russian oar JIM GARNER A Matter of Finance 4 JIm GARNER t' A Matter Of Finance I THE GREAT OUTDOORS "The hogs don't leave a strong scent as some might expect and they are easier for the dogs to trail when the weather is damp That's what makes them a rare trophy" Some people may think we made a dry run on this hunt but we didn't Although we didn't bag a boar we had the time of our lives just knowing they were in those mountains somewhere and I can't wait to try it again Later in the day we met Thompson and his dogs along a roadside "Hunting the boars is just like any other type of hunting" Thompson said othing guarantees you will see them every time you go hunting especially when it's as dry as it has been Willie Davenport is a high-stepping individual who moves in fast circles Only something is wrong Despite all that motion Willie doesn't hear many coins jingling in his pockets Thus the track world stands to lose one of its premier contestants and a 1968 Olympic gold medalist It's all a matter of finances Davenport who twice equalled the world record of 68 in the 60-yard high hurdles over the weekend currently is considered the best timber-topper in the nation But he's also a football player and therein rests the future of his amateur status Like many trackmen who know their way around a gridiron Willie has heard the beckoning of the pros He's noticed that the likes of Bob Hayes Henry Carr and Jimmy Hines have had success swapping world records trophies and medals for some of that green spending stuff And he likes what he sees and hears 1 4 1 I '6i roi 14 4iskitI vfl 'No i ri Sale" As "--e 2 1441 tit xiitto' "4 i 4 1414t Nvi! 1 d'i'lk7 if i 4 JO '4 4 Sportsmen's Show Fills Up With Aces as Don Hill and I worked one mountain ridge while Gene Dahl and Louis Wood of Fort Worth worted another Hunting without dogs however is difficult and we didn't see a single hog along the mountain ridges during our morning hunt 11 I II JUST BEFORE we returned to Chili's car before lunch Hill and I spotted several animals along a ledge 75 yards below They were wild Mou flon sheep a huge ram drawing most of our attention The ram had at least a full curl and a quarter maybe even a curl and half lie would have made a beautiful trophy We returned to the car and when Chili learned we had spotted the wild ram he totd us we should have bagged him They are like the Russian boars he said They are just running wild throughout the mountains and that was all the explaining Hill and I needed We headed back up the mountain hoping to find the big ram again but we didn't If only we had known sooner By BOB HOOD Star 4oloorom Outdoor Writer UTOPIA Daylight was just beignning to creep over the tops of the towering Hill Country mountains Chili Ayres looked at his watch and 400 Itio nodded "It's time" 1- he said You i 'k wilt want to get atop vi those moun- tabs early and don't for- BOB get what I HOOD told you about those beasts up there" The ''beasts'' Chili had referred to are Russian boars wild hogs hich have become a menace to area ranchers We were more interested in trophy hogs but they are good to eat too and Chili had proven it by serivng us pork chops from a wild hog for breakfast The Russian boar isn't anything like the brush-country javelina The Russians will weigh Lround 250 pounds on the average and have tusks often measuring six inches long and they aren't afraid to use them CURLY II OMPSO a Utopia rancher who uses a pack of dogs to hunt the hogs knows just how ferocious they are and so do his dogs Many of them sport scars from battles with the hogs Since the Russian boar isn't hesitant about charging a man I decided the best way to hunt them without dogs is to walk about 20 yards look for a good-looking tree walk another 20 yards and search for another climbable piece of timber That was the method I used OP tk r''' i ic 4 'VI Ph(Vo RARE Cooley of Utopia shows off rare Russian boar trophy which was taken by Curly Thompson and his pack of dogs in the rugged mountains in Uvalde County 1m Pho'o notch fly caster also are due for the show These stars and many others will perform daily at the nine-day event which opens in the Tarrant County Convention Center Satuday at noon The daily stage and tank shows will be held at 3 pm and 8 pm on weekends and at 8 pm on weekdays The center's doors will open at 11 am on weekends and at 5 pm on weekdays In addition to the stage and tank shows there will be many exhibits of the latest in fishing hunting boating and camping Admission is $150 for adults 50 cents for children with all under age six admitted free A few of the nation's top stars in the outdoors sports field are in Fort Worth this wedc for the Fort Worth Sportsmen's a Vacation Show Among those who have arried are Ann Clark former national a international women's archery champion Loral I Delaney women's Grand American Trap Shooting Champion from 1966 through 1968 and Randy and Dalton Peck Canadian champions of logrolling and canoe tilting Orwin Harvey one of the world's top comedy divers and Jack Sharkey former world hevyweight boxing champion who now is a top FOR WILLIE FOOTBALL NO STRANGER Therefore Davenport's cinder career is coming to a close He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers and plans soon to swap his spikes for cleats "I'll run until I sign" he said the other night after matching haves Jones' world mark in the 60s at the Fort Worth Coaches Indoor Games "I don't know yet when that'll be but I am going to try football I'm really enthused about turning pro" Unlike some track stars of the past who thought speed was the only prerequisite for pro grid glory Davenport knows what he's reckoning with Ile played football In high school and spent three years on the varsity at Southern University In fact he left the Olympics immediately after winning his gold medal to hurry back to Louisiana for the last half of the '68 campaign "I didn't play as a freshman" he said "but I did the other seasons I was a cornerback my first two years and a split end as a senior" It's the latter he aspires to play as a pro "I expect getting used to the contact will be the hardest adjustment for me to make" he forecast "I didn't get to play a lot last year because of the Olympics" But Willie still exudes a quiet confidence when discussing his playfor-pay future Briton Next Foe For UAR Netter The Arlington Zee has moved to Hwy 157 Turnpike 0 4 COLLEGE CAGE WE SPENT most of the remainder of the du looking over Thompson's captured hogs plus a couple of large mounted boar heads in two Utopia stores Beneath one mounted head were the words: "Killed by Curly Thompson Killed to date 89" lie has taken 10 more since then Hill Dahl and I worked another mountain ridge late in the evening but again we did not see a hog But the next days hunt locked promising Thompson and a group of ranchers were going to let 18 dogs go in various canyons and if the weather was right we just might get a hog HILL DAHL and I had just climbed atop a mountain shortly after sunrise the next morning when we heard the dogs far away But the weather hadn't been right It was dry and the dogs failed to pick up a hot trail eign seed from Brazil 13-1t) 6-1 Graebiter the No 2 domestic seed and favored since the witdrawal of top-seeded Arthur MONETARY LOSS However he already has felt disappointment in dealing with the money mongers In the recent draft Davenport was tabbed in the fifth round by the New Orleans Saints But someone said he wasn't eligible so the choice was rescinded Later the mistake was corrected and Willie was chosen in the 16th round by the Chargers Davenport leaves no doubt as to his feelings over the outcome "It was about a $30000 mistake that's all" he said pointing to the contract evaluating difference between draft choices 10 rounds apart In the meantime Willie is still an amateur hurdler His name is in the world record book for the 45 50 60 and 120 'indoors and out) events And he's bidding for the standard in the TN before he quits "After all" he pointed out "Those world records are pretty good
