24c Fort 1Vorth STARITIFGRANI AUGUST 9 1966 Space Program Hurt Badly by Budget Cut Space Program Hurt Six Flags Worker Killed in Accident in a news release described as "an interim operating plan for fiscal year 1969" The word "interim" was emphasized throughout the release The agency will operate under the interim plan pending completion of congressional action on the fiscal year 1969 funds by the bureau of the budget" the release said inferring that the agency was waiting for further budget cuts ed prior to the first attempt to land men on the moon hopefully by the end of next year Should another cut of $700 million be cut from NASA this fiscal year it will mean that the space agency's budget will have been reduced almost in half since fiscal year 1966 when a peak of $59 billion was spent during the rush of space flights in the Gemini program and the buildup for the Apollo program The seriousness of NASA's fiscal problems has been underscored in the past week by an almost endless series of meetings of its top officials from throughout the nation in the agency's headquarters here First results of the meeting were made public Thursday By BILL MAY StarTelegrom kid-Citits AR NGTON twirling revolution when Nelson lost balance The ride was stopped immediateiy when Nelson tumbled into the pit It was in the slowing down process when the accident occurred the spokesman said Nelsons body remained at tlie Arlington hospital tate Thursday and it was not known what funeral home would handle arrangements The death was the first fatal accident inside the park since it opened in 1960 YOUR HEADQUARTERS FOR PRE-FINISHED PANIELOPC 41 01t By RICHARD LYONS 161 Now York Tinws News Service WASHINGTON Congressional budget cuts have forced the Federal Space Agency to condition itself for a single entry in the race to the moon and little else With $362 million already cut from its budget this year the agency the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Agency announced Thursday that 3600 personnel including 1600 federal employes would be let go In addition the purchase of four huge booster rockets of the Saturn class has been canceled plans to land some unmanned packages of scientific instrument on Mars have been shelved lunar exploration programs have been halted and the development of a nuclear rocket engine all but suspended NASA had asked Congrsss in January for $437 billion This has been already trimmed to $4 billion and further budget cuts lie ahead NASA will amost certainly have to absorb part of the $6 billion federal budget cut demanded by Congress as part of the recent tax increase While the extent of the additional cut has yet to be determined some NASA officials have privately conceded that it might be as much as $700 million If that figure is finally decided upon it would mean a total reduction of $1 billion from the funds requested last January and would put in mothballs or completely cancel almost every NASA program except the Apollo mission to the moon and related flights The first launching of a manned Apollo vehicle is scheduled to be made in about three months One two or even three earth orbital flights of three-man Apollo crews are
