1 LI t- By MICHAEL PRICE FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM "People are no longer interested in dinosaurs or prehistory" the former Fort Worth Star-Telegram cartoonist VT Hamlin said 30 years ago explaining why he was planning to retire from his pioneering dinosaur comic strip Alley Oop His observation was correct for its time but of course Hamlin had no way of knowing that future genera: lions would be crazy about prehis- toric creatures The new crop of dinosaur fanatics may even be undiscriminating enough to embrace a repellent new tele-series called Dinosaurs weigh- ing in tonight at 7:30 as a strategically placed half-hour attraction on WFAAChannel 8 Wedged between the established ABC hits Full House and Family Matters the new entry also will have a May 5 showcase after America's Funniest Home Videos Dinosaurs' premise is exciting enough: The exploits of imaginative creatures based upon a variety of antediluvian beasts and bearing the final creative input of the lamented Muppets-master Jim Henson But the execution is terrible: In lieu of the adventurous storytelling such a setting demands an assembly line of uncredited hack writers has put a cast of Henson Creature Shop puppets at the service of retread sitcom plotting with clever and shallow one-liners and sentimental do- right preachments from some holier-than-thou moral ground Such groundbreaking dinosaur artists as cartoonist Hamlin and film animator Willis O'Brien (1 933's King Kong) kept in mind the monsters' formidable presence even when using them for comic effect But then both O'Brien and were influenced by the great natural-history painters Bruce and Charles Knight But mention Knight or Horsfall to a Henson Creature Shop artisan and expect a blank stare The stars of Dinosaurs look more like disowned offspring ofJapan's Godzilla which is itself a corruption of science's best guesses about the dinosaurs' looks and habits Lacking only a laugh track to corn- plete its bondage to formula Dinosaurs centers on a cretinous household whose inmates are mod eled after the likes of The Honeymooners The Flintstones and All in the Family The dinosaurs simplistic caricatures of middle class Americans of
