1113 SO. ST. KJ-CS49 SANMINAIDMO 'The Great American Fourth of July and Other Disasters' The late James Broderick, Barbara Bolton and teen idol Matt Dillon star in Jean Shepherd's The Great A men icon Fourth of July and Other Disasters, a hilarious satire of the foibles and glorious chaos of holiday celebrations in middle America, encoring on American Playhouse, Tuesday at 9PM on KCET (Channel 28). The action takes place in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana, much like Shepherd's boyhood town in the Midwest, of which he says: "If Chicago was Carl Sandburg's City of the Broad Shoulders, then Hohman has to be that city's rear end." Shepherd has entertained readers for years with stories about his youth "in that great inverted bowl of darkness, the Midwest." His stories are about the bittersweet pangs of growing up, and his cast of characters is based on real people, which is probably why they are funny and sad at the same time. There is the family: Dad (James Broderick), whose passions are the Chicago White Sox and old cars; Mom (Barbara Bolton), who is caught up in chain letters and convinced that she could Brillo away all the evil in the world if she could just find time; little brother, Randy (Jay Ine), who constantly has a runny nose; and teenager, Ralph (Matt Dillon), the narrator of the story.

Other Hohman-ites are: Schwartz (Jeff Yonis), who is Ralph's best friend and has no more than a meatball for a brain; Wilbur Duckworth (Mike Morre), a three-time state twirling champion with the soul of a true Nazi; Uncla Carl (Rick Riker), a true entrepreneur or peddler; and Ludlow Kissel (Babe Sargent), the family's neighbor and a true loser. Put all these zany characters together on the Fourth of July and you end up with a madcap celebration in which everything that can possibly go wrong, does. The comedy is closed captioned for the hearing-impaired and will be repeated Saturday at 10PM.
