EEK & MEEK by Howie Schneider QUESTION: What is an albatross? * * * ANSWER: The albatross resembles a giant gull as it rides the air currents. It is related to the petrel, a smaller sea bird. There are about 1 7 species of albatross and they are found in the oceans of the southern hemisphere. The best known is the Wandering Albatross, a beautiful bird with a white body and darker wings and tail - one of the largest flying birds with a wing spread from 10 to 12 feet. The body is relatively short and the feet are webbed for swimming. This giant bird spends most of its time in flight over the oceans. Its food consists of jellyfish and squids and it also feeds on food scraps thrown from ships. These graceful birds frequently follow a ship for days. Aibatrosses breed usually on oceanic islands. The female lays one egg on the ground; there is no attempt at nest construction. Sailors have superstitions concerning the albatross. Early seamen welcomed the sight of the albatross. It was considered good luck to encounter the bird and bad luck to kill one. 5-28 (Matt Hawk of Auburn, Alabama, wins a prize for this question.
