Tttti TATRIFF. TImj rejection of Gen. McKayV bill to repeal the Tariff, has confounded the leaden of Locofocoisrn in the South. These leaders had so often and so confidently assured the humbugged people, that no soon as they got into power Uicy would repeal this iniquitous Whig measure, that they arc now at tlicir wits' end to devise sonic excuse for the vote of the House, a House containing 13C Loco-locos to 81 Whig. Van Buren wrote to the Richmond Enquirer, that he was opposed to the present Tariff, both in its principles and its details; and yet he has not induced his friends to vote for its repeal or amendment This wc suppose is being a Southern man with Northern principles.

Gen. Saunders told the people of this District last Summer, whilst ojiking tlirm to send him to Congress, "that the Northern Democrats were pledged to the Southern Democrats to repeal tlic present Tariff, and reduce the duties." Did the veracious General speak the truth? If so, the Northern Democrats have proved faithlent to their pledge, as Loco-focoism will ever prove faithless to any pledge which VAN BUREN'S TEXAS LETTER. When this letter first appenrcd; it was a matter of universal remark, that, for once in his life, tlic wily politician had spoken out his mind plainly, so that every one could understand him. He was uttcily, (so the world thought,) oguinst the Treaty, and against the admission of Texas, according to the lights now before him. Tlic remark was even made, that, strong as was the position of Mr.

The Richmond Whig says, sincerely cpngrntulatc the country upon this Burcn's letter backwards, with the remark, that "We have concluded to state, in our oicn language, and os concisely and clearly as we can, its important points: the positions which Mr. Van Bin en discusses, in assumes, in relation to the annexation of Texas to the United States, as a part of its territory from which new may thereafter be lorni-ed, ut the discretion of Confess.

"The incessant efforts made by these gentlemen, tending to distract the democratic party, have convinced us that they do not desire the union of the party, nor indeed THE UNION OF THE STATES." It is confidently asserted at Washington, that there bitions, and inquires for the justice of man that allowed of such unlawful, unruly violence; or the justice of. Heaven, which seemed to sleep amid the wrong doings of the wicked, both when the murders were committed anti the property wasted. We learned nothing there to answer that inquiry, but, returning by the way of Fourth street, we went up arid stood amid the smouldering ruins of Saint Augustine's; and when we renewed our inquiry, our eye rested on the uppermost portion of the opposite wall, from which the fire had peeled every particle of plastering and licked off the decorative paint; but, as if in defiance of the wrath of man and the fury of the flames, there stood in clear uninjured letters the inscription, "77e Lord Seeth."
