BROWMWOOD BULLETIN AH you got Young Award to Mets 1 IW CfO IS QSK NEW YORK (AP) Tom National or American Leagues votes and 50 points for his 24-12 'innati, three, points, and 1 nnpp cnirl hoVI lio Viannv tifin it nl t- Seaver By Murray Olderman The tipeff; The benchings of football's most venerable aging quarterbacks, John Brodie and John Unitas, weren't nearly as placid as their clubs made them out to be. Brodie, particularly, was in a direct philosophical clash with the 49ers over how their offense should be run. Q. bid Charles 0. Finley's frantic ahtics really affect the Oakland Athletics in their play oh the field during the World Series? Jake CatHh, Fort Worth, Tex.

Positively. In the sense that the A's were distracted continually by the probing press wanting to know what Callous Charley was going to do next. "We never got a chance to think baseball," said Reggie Jackson. Q. How come the Atlanta Falcons didn't fire Norm Van Brocklih as their coach a few weeks ago? All the papers said they would.

George Humphrey, Waycross, Ga. But. Rankin Smith, their owner, who pays the freight, didn't say so. In fact, Rankin told me recently, "You don't fire a coach until you've got a better one." Also, Rankin's still rank over the liming of the rumors of Van Brocklin's firing. "The story said I was out duck hunting," he fumed.

"And I'm a member of the Game and Fish Commission and duck hunting isn't in season." Prediction: Rankin will let Van Brocklin finish out the season and then dump him. Q. Notre Dame's always up there among the best college teams in football is there really such a thing as the Spirit of Notre Dame? Randy Gola, Gary, Ind. What it is is recruiting, although you can't ignore the fervor for football under the Golden Dome (which dominates the ND campus). The old college rah-rah has died down some, but as recently as a decade ago, every incoming Notre Dame freshman football player had to sit through a screening of Pat O'Brien playing Knute Rockne and imploring the squad to win one for Ronald Reagan (the Gipper).

Q. Who has the highest yearly salary in the American history of sports, and what'is It? What athlete in any sport made the most money in the shortest time? Alex Ellis, Fresno, Calif. I would have to say that Wilt Chamberlain's current contract with the San Diego Conquistadors, for more than half a million dollars, ranks tops. For the most money in the shortest lime, the co-winners would seem to be Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali, who collected $2.5 million each for their March 8, 1971 title fight. But that went 15 rounds, or 45 minutes.

The all-time champ is Floyd Patterson, who collected $1,434,000 for lasting two minutes and 10 seconds in 1963 against Sonny Listen, or a little over SI 1,000 per second. For sheer dollar value, I'll take Gene Tunney's $990,445 (from the live gate alone) for whipping Jack Dempsey in the low- tax year of 1927. Q. What ever happened to Cedrick llardman? Is he still playing for the lilers and if so, how is he doing? Chuck Weinberg, Lcviltown, Pa. Cedrick, a fourth-year defensive end, and one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, is still very much with the 49ers.

But too often, while Cedrick barges in on the quarterback, a man carrying the ball rushes right past him. So Cedrick has been temporarily demoted and shares time at right end with Bill Belk. Q. Where was the famous Heidi game played? I say in Oakland. My friend says in New York.

If memory serves me right, Oakland scored twice in the last 12, 16 or 18 seconds. B.K., Clear Lake, Calif. Your memory serves you mostly right. The game was in Oakland. And to let the country see Heidi climb the highest mountain, the NBC network switched off the Jets-Raiders game with 50 seconds' to'play and the Raiders trailing 32-29.

They scored two touchdowns and won, 43-32. That was in 1968. Q. During the PGA Golf tournament, I saw Sam Snead making putt standing ustride the ball and using a pendulum swing. One of my fellow workers said I couldn't have seen it because it is illegal in tournament play.

Which one of us right? Mrs. William T. Wood, Marinette, Wis. Ola Sam, ever since he got the yips bending over a putt in orthodox fashion, has been stroking the ball side saddle, standing to one side of it, directly facing the hole. The rules of golf say that "the player shall not make a stroke on the putting green from a stance astride the line of the putt." A lot of the older players, when their nerves get frazzled from the tension, look for different putting styles.

Parting shot: Seaver once said he'd be happy to last five years in the majors. Today, he is the owner of a second Cy Young Award as the National League's best pitcher. "When I first started playing, I told my wife I'd be happy to get five years in the big leagues," the New York Mets right-hander said Tuesday after winning his second Cy Young Award in seven seasons in the majors. "Now I want to pitch until I'm 1(5," added the 28-year-old Seaver, who became the fourth pitcher in the 18-year history of the award to win it more than once and the first in either the Blanket six in cage win BLANKET-Basketball action got underway in Mid- Texas as girls' teams from Blanket and Star saw action Monday night. The Star standouts were Mitzi Gilbreath with 27 points (high point girl for Star), Pam Hamilton with 21 and Therrsa Jewell dropping in 6. In the game, Blanket again was the winner by a tally of 3528. In voting by a committee of the Baseball Writers Association of America, Seaver got 10 first-place votes and 70 points iifler being named on 21 ballots, more than any other candidate. The Eagles of Coach Milford Groves have been busily at work compiling the only unbeaten, untied and unscored on record left in the state this season.

They are within three games of becoming the seventh team in Texas schoolboy history to finish a season unscored on. Holiiday, now 7-0, held its No. 1 ranking this week along with San Angelo in Class 4A, Gregory-Portland in Class 3A, Friendswood in Class 2A and Big Sandy in Class B. Holiiday has outscored its opponents, including three Class 2A teams, 171,0. In last week's H-0 victory over Archer City, each Holiiday player wore a piece of tape on his helmet bearing the 14-13 score by which Archer City beat them for the District 7A crown last season.

Alabama had 748 rushing a nd 833 yards total of fense on Saturday, setting major college records. Even its reserves are doing exceptionally well. The reserves are averaging 249 rushing yards a game. That's a higher average than 105 entire major teams have managed.

minutes in the game where they could have kicked a field goal but elected to try for a first down on fourth and three. It failed. Holiiday faces Crowell, Knox City and Paducah in its final three games and Crowell this week could be another test with a 2-0 district record. Only five ranked teams were beaten last week. Midland, ranked fifth in 4A, was beaten by No.

1 ranked San Angelo and disappeared this week. Two unbeaten teams, Beaumont South Park and Wichita Falls, became the Nos. 9 and 10 teams this week. Bastrop, fourth last week in 2A and Rosebud-Lott, ranked seventh, were losers last week and dropped from the top 10. The newcomers are unbeaten Caldweil and Van Vleck, which has a C-l record.

Van Vleck's only loss this season was to Galveston O'Connell, the unbeaten defending Class 2A Catholic st.its champion. Franklin, 7-0 moved into the 10th position in Class A this week after New Diana, which was No 1 most of the season, lost its second straight game as did O'Donnell. "It means an awful lot to me because of the name that's on it because it goes to one pitcher in the (hat's it," said Seaver after joining Sandy Koufax of Los Angeles, 1963-65-66; Bob Gibson of St.

Louis, 1968-70, and Denny McLain of Detroit in the American League, 1968-69, as multiple C'y Young Award winners. "I really didn't think I'd win it," said Seaver, who also won in 1969 when he had a 25-7 i-ecord. "It was really a surprise because of the importance of winning 20 games. But all the nther numbers innings, strikeouts, earned run average, it etc. were there and I'm glad the voters looked at them.

The American League Cy Young winner will be named Nov. 7. LA, Suns NO CHANGES TOM Hard times for Cowboys DALLAS (AP)-If any other team in the National Football League had lost three out of their last four games, you would be tempted to punch their ticket out of the playoffs. But the Dallas Cowboys aren't an ordinary football team. They've been to the NFL playoffs a record seven consecutive years and have made a habit oi slow starts and fast finishes.

Dallas won Super Bowl VI after a 4-3 beginning including a 38-0 lump from St. Louis. There are again rumblings the Cowboys are on a downward spiral, particularly after Sunday's 30-16 loss to first victory in 12 tries for the Eagles against Dallas. "I'm not witboul coaching iielp these days," Cowboy Coach Tom Landry said Tuesday, taking note of criticism about the team's sloppy play. "Our club hasn't quit and we will not make any changes." In the past, Landry has taken over play-calling duties or shaken the personnel when the Cowboys suffered a sinking spell.

The announcement of status quo was a mild surprise. Landry hotly defended his maligned cornerback Charlie Waters, who has been the target of enemy quarterbacks most of the season. "A lot has been said about Waters," Landry said firmly. "If I could play with 40 like him Ihe way he tries I wouldn't have any problems." "Waters is a tremendous battler. They (Philadelphia) threw eight passes at Charlie and only completed one.

He had a very good game except for one interference call and the touchdown pass. I like people like him to give you 100 cent." Landry tinkered with the idea of calling plays for quarterback Roger Staubach then discarded it. "Whether my calling the plays would make a difference I'm this point," Landry said. Landry was particularly miffed at his specialty teams and implied that he would not hesitate to use regulars on the "suicide squad" to shake things up. "We need some changes and I'm putting (assistant) Coach Gene Slallings in charge of this area," Landry said.

Dallas' pass-blocking also came under fire, particularly the work of tackle Ralph Neely, who was beaten numerous times in the Eagle loss. "I'm not thinking about replacing him," Landry said stiffly. "Somebody asked Landry what Washington must have thought about the Redskins' loss to New Orleans. "I don't know," Landry said. "Why don't you call, (Redskin Coach) George (Allen)?" probtems LOS ANGELES (AP) The Phoenix Suns had their differences with controversial Connie Hawkins and the Los Angeles Inkers were unable to come to terms with holdout Keith Erickson.

so the two National Basketball association teams swapped problems. Los Angeles hopes to gain added scoring punch at forward find Phoenix is looking to bolster an eratic defense. To obtain Hawkins, 31, hampered by injuries this season, the Lakers Tuesday traded Erickson, 29, who never reported to the club this year because of a salary dispute, and their second choice in the 1974 NBA draft. Hawkins has played four years in the NBA after two in the ABA. With Phoenix Hawkins has been accused of lackadaisical play, skipping practices and showing up late.

"I've had trouble sustaining concentration for really long periods of time," said Hawkins. "I'm going to try concentrating more and be more serious about basketball." The 6-foot-8 Hawkins may lack some defensive skills but he has averaged 20.7 points a at forward, where the Lakers have two rebounding Bridges and Happy Hairston. Erickson, in his eighth year, played previously with San Francisco and Chicago. Commerce Square 509 W.Commeree Open p.m. Phone: 646-1579 TIRE AUTO SERVICE CENTER 1 PRICES GOOD THURSDAY-SATURDAY.
