season but CBS is moving close to NBC in ratings for the season to date according to Nielsen ratings released Tuesday NBC's saloon comedy which celebrates its 200th episode tonight averaged a 224 rating helping the Peacock Network win the week with an average prime-time rating of 135 whose 60 Minutes and Murder She Wrote each had their highest ratings since the season began was second last week with a 126 ABC was third with an 119 Each ratings point represents 931000 homes However CBS' season-to-date margin is much closer to NBC and is making the ratings race tighter than had been anticipated said NBC research vice president Preston Beckman 'Although NBC still leads with a 133 average CBS trying to rebound from three consecutive seasons as third in prime-time ratings now has a 130 average for the season so far ABC is third with a 125 "It's a much tighter race CBS is making it even tighter than we thought" it would be Beckman said He credited part of CBS' surge with the Nielsen performances of CBS' Murphy Brown Designing Women and 60 Minutes In last week's battle of The Cos vs Bart NBC's The Cosby Show easily beat Fox Broadcasting's half-hour The Simpsons The former averaged an 186 to the 158 for the Fox show when thg two directly competed with each other and NBC's show averaged a 202 rating for the full hour A special Monday showing of Burt ReYnolds'EveningShade CBS comedy also fared well It was 24th in the rankings with a 151 average far better than the 95 rating and No 57 ranking of its regular Friday broadcast In the news wars ABCs World News Tonight won the Nielsen battle for the 43fd consecutive week It averaged an 114 well ahead of the 100 for the CBS Evening News and the 95 for the NBC Nightly News The week's top 10 list was dominated by old reliables save for NBC's showing of the movie hit Three Men and a Baby and ABCs new America's Fun- niest People They were respectively foiirth and 10th in the rankings with NBC's movie getting a 199
