Principal Quince Fulton announced a Nov 8 election to replace the school's Rebel mascot The announcement came one week after a crudely painted Confederate battle flag caused a group of black students to walk out of a pep rally that then degenerated into a series of racial confrontations and fights The Confederate flag was banned from the school four years ago Fulton made his announcement over the public address system about 9 am yesterday three days after school board members told him to change the mascot or the school board would do it "We're not going to be judged on what kind of mascot we have or anything like that" Fulton told the school's more than 1900 students "We're going to be judged on what kind of students we are" Students will submit nominations for a new mascot Tuesday On Nov 5 a committee of about 20 students parents and teachers will pare the nominations down to a handful which will be voted on Nov 8 The school will keep its red white and blue colors Early mascot suggestions include the Texans Mavericks Red Raiders Wranglers Mustangs and Patriots Fulton said the mascot will change immediately after the results of the vote are announced the day after the election Coincidentally the school's first athletic event with the new Southwest mascot will be a Nov 12 basketball game against Richland High School the North Richland Hills school that has a Rebel mascot Confederate battle flag and the theme song Dixie Many students have mixed feelings about changing the mascot said Russell Sebastian a 1 7-year-old Southwest senior and member of the mascot school" Sebastian said "It's time to change it It's hurt too many people way too many people I've seen too many of my friends shed tears over this" Sean Moch an 18-year-old senior and basketball player who is one of several blacks on the committee was uncertain that the theme change would help settle racial tensions "Maybe it will help Maybe it won't Some people are still going to be angry" Moch said "Last year being a rebel was pretty cool to me But when most of the kids started wanting to bring the flag back most of the black students started looking back to Civil War times" Fulton said six students were suspended earlier this week for three days in connection with the Oct 19 melee and Thursday's pep rally was canceled Fulton said changing the mascot will cost thousands of dollars For example replacing the school sign bearing the Yosemite Sam symbol will cost about $1000 he said The Rebels name or the Yosemite Sam symbol is on athletic uniforms school walls and in the name of the school newspaper Rebetetion Ronny White school district athletic director said a new set of uniforms will run more than $60000 Fulton said he will present the school board with a detailed list of the costs at the board's Nov 13 meeting "I would hope that they would help us that they would provide assistance" Fulton said ring also would sell the undocumented immigrants INS 1-444 travel documents allowing them to pass beyond the 25-mile zone They used the crossing cards to obtain the travel documents De La Cruz said Some in the smuggling ring would obtain several travel documents per week he said The ring smuggled about 1000 immigrants per year to San Antonio the Border Patrol agent said Ring members would collect the border crossing cards from the traveling immigrants at San Antonio then return the cards to Nuevo Laredo for further rentals They reportedly grossed about $1 million per year by charging the illegal immigrants from $750 to 1 500 for the rented crossing cards and travel permits Central and South Americans would be charged about twice as much as Mexican customers De La Cruz said Agents from Gobernacion the federal Mexican department conducting the investigation found hundreds of legitimate INS documents in the Nuevo Laredo lawyer's office officials said They included border crossing cards Texas birth certificates marriage licenses letters of employment Mexican military ID cards Mexican passports with valid US visas Texas vehicle titles and US Social Security cards "We're appreciative of the cooperation they Mexican authorities have given us because now we're able to attack not only the operations on this side of the border but also the organizations in Mexico" De La Cruz said Act also open the door to another large market for Texas natural gas utility and industrial broilers he said These broilers according to Mauro are required to reduce such emissions as nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide The US Public Interest Research Group issued a statement saying the 1 3-year wait for a clean air bill capable of controlling toxic air pollution "which in Texas exceeds 169 million pounds per year may soon be over" "With President Bush's approval of this bill we will be on our way to eliminating toxic air pollution smog acid rain and ozone depleting chemicals" said Paul Garlinghouse of the Public Interest Research Group Kramer of the Sierra Club Lone Star Chapter said: "The imposition of stronger air quality measures will lead to job creation as new pollution-control IAI Card ol Thanks MB43 i Cemstsry Lots MS44 Death Notices MMO renting legitimate US immigration documents to people seeking to enter the United States illegally a US official said yesterday Mexican federal agents infiltrated the ringafter US immigration officials asked for help said Joe De La Cruz supervisory special agent with the US Border Patrol's anti-smuggling unit at Laredo "What they did was launch an operation on their own to identify infiltrate and dismantle the organization that was responsible for providing the documents that we were encountering in the United States" De La Cruz said Mexican immigration officials Thursday raided the office of Nuevo Laredo attorney Ezequiel Padilla Gonzalez 43 Documents found at the office show that he led the organization for at least 10 years De La Cruz said Five other people also were arrested and charged under Mexican law with alien smuggling and document falsification according to the Border Patrol The ring primarily used border crossing cards The US Immigration and Naturalization Service issues the cards to Mexicans living near the United States who can show a need to enter this country frequently The cards allow entry as far as 25 miles from the border Members of the Nuevo Laredo-based smuggling organization would hire Mexicans to obtain the cards which later were rented to others trying to enter the United States illegally The Jimmie Curbo of Fort Worth 11
