applaud Some of the red-clad Nebraska fans even exchanged handslaps with the Bears who came in as I 7-point underdogs The Bears after all had to make do with a redshirt sophomore quarterback who was making his first college start Baylor limped along to 164 yards of total offense went 43 minutes before completing a pass and still nearly lived to tell about upsetting a team that has national championship aspirations "Going into the game we expected them to be real aggressive and come off the line of scrimmage harder than they did" said Baylor defensive tackle Marcus Lowe who was credited with two tackles behind the line of scrimmage "Overall I'm happy from a team point of iew because we gained a lot of respect Now a lot of people can't write Baylor off" The Bears defense lived up to its preseason billing as one of the best in the Southwest Conference from the start limiting Nebraska to 156 yards and two field goals in the first half Unfortunately for Teaff his offense lived up to its pre-season billing too Anybody who watched the Bears finish last in the SWC in total offense while committing 36 turnovers last year knows what that means Baylor eked out five first downs and 60 yards total offense in the first half while fumbling three times New offensive coordinator Chuck Reedy who helped install the Veer this spring called four pass plays in the first half but a hesitant Needham didn't get rid of the ball once until the second half The only saving grace for the Bears was that they recovered all three of their first-half fumbles "We feel great" said Needham who was 2 for 8 for 28 yards with four sacks and an interception "We have all the confidence in the world One game is not going to dictate the season If it did it would dictate this season is going to go well We don't have anything to complain about offensively except we didn't put any points on the board" Details details The Bears' first real chance to get some points came six plays into the second quarter when Ireland missed wide right on a 49-yard field-goal attempt By then Comhuskers kicker Gregg Barrios already had done his part to make it a defensive tussle by missing a 2 I -yard attempt Barrios came through with a 37- yarder with 8:21 left in the second quarter Nebraska pieced together another scoring drive just before the half moving 50 yards 34 of them coming on a pass from Nebraska's other regular quarterback Mike Grant to Jon Bostick in six plays Barrios kicked a 20- yard field goal with 1:46 left in the half giving the Comhuskers a 6-0 lead The Nebraska lead didn't appear to be in the slightest danger until Baylor started a I 5-play drive late in the third quarter Needham kept the drive alive with his only completions of the night then scrambled for 7 yards on a fourthand-3 play from the Nebraska 12 That gave the Bears a first-and-goal from the Nebraska 6 Two plays later Needham and Smith had an uncertain exhange "I probably didn't get the ball into FranIde good" Needham said "I didn't feel it right in there so I probably didn't get it in good When that happens you stand a good chance of a fumble" And Baylor stood 3 yards short "Our kids had their hearts torn out because they lost" Teaff said "And when they came off the football field the fans gave them a standing ovation :4 1 1 4 Cent Connecticut State 36 Buffalo 25 Colgate 21 Boston 10 Conland State South holds Carolina to no By STEVE CAMPBELL FOn Wonh Star-Telegram LINCOLN Neb Three yards Nine feet One hundred eight inches In short all the difference in the world for the Baylor Bears and the Nebraska Comhuskers Three yards and the Comhuskers would have been hard-pressed to shoo away a cloud of doubt Three yards and the Bears might never have come back down from the clouds The trouble for the Bears is 3 yards is a journey of cross-country proportions under the present circumstances The Bears were so close and yet so far from knocking Nebraska off the nation's No 7 perch before falling themselves 13-0 in a season opener last night at Memorial Stadium A crowd of 76184 and a national television audience saw the Bears come within a Hankie Smith fumble 3 yards from the end zone of scoring the go-ahead touchdown pending an extra-point attempt by Jeff Ireland with less than 11 minutes remaining If not for a fumble-causing hit by Comhuskers linebacker Pat Tyrance and a recovery by Travis Hill the Bears would have been in a position to win despite being handcuffed by an offense restricted to little more than handoff after handoff from quarterback Steve Needham The Comhuskers' only touchdown came on a 2-yard run by Scott Baldwin with 29 seconds remaining too little too late to tarnish the work of the Baylor defense The Bears allowed 335 total yards but 130 of those came after the last-dance last-chance drive fizzled so close to coach Grant Teams vision of the promised land "I think anyone that saw the game knows that the game turned when we fumbled on the 3-yard line" Teaff said "All we've got to do is score a touch NC State From Wire Reports North Carolina State's defense held Western Carolina without a first down to tie a national record as the Wolfpack
