I was mar- 17 11 a litnht? hitt ha ried three years ago when I Cross at Camp Bowie which occupied a great part of the present Arlington Heights AS A FEDERATED club member Mrs Hutchison took an active part in the various cultural civic and welfare projects including library and art association expansion city federation cultural programs and the Baby Hospital which became the Fort or th Children's Hospital The women's groups also engaged actively in park development Mrs Hutchison who recalls that all of her outside activities had her husband's approval and support never neglected my home and she took her turn backing up her husband's official projects while he was a member of the park board during some period of important growth planning Mrs Hutchison's educational contributions were given state government recognition in 1923 when Governor Pat Neff named her to the Texas State Education Commission Others serving on this board included Dr Horn of Texas Technological College now Texas Tech in Lubbock Dr Brooks of Baylor University and Dr George Works of Cornell University MRS HUTCHISON also has been active in the Hemphill and First Presbyterian (lurches She organized a child study class for mothers in the First Presbyterian Church in 1921 and taught it for a number of years Chalmers Hutchison Jr was an infant when his parents moved to Fort Worth in 1902 The second child Emily Mrs Edward A Wiggin was born June 6 1906 in the family's second home in For Worth a large residence on Crestline Road and one of the first built by the real estate company which started Arlington Heights in the 1890s This location might still be the Hutchison family home if there had been a Trinity flood control program 60 years ago Mr and Mrs Hutchison wearied of the inconveniences which at times were real dangers of commuting to business shopping and social affairs across the Trinity The Seventh Street bridge could become submerged up to the buggy seat in a few minutes of flash flood AFTER A number of exciting dashes to beat the swirling flood waters sometimes with the horse swimming and Mrs Hutchison standing on the seat the reins in one band and the trailing skirts of her best party frock held up in the other the Hutchisons moved back to their first Fort Worth home site corner of Ballinger and Presidio They had lived here briefly after arriving in 1902 and they returned in the fall of 1906 Here the third child David was born Nov 13 1907 All three children are still residents of Fort Worth By JOSEPHLNE LOWMAN (This is my little verse) Do you ride on youthful pep That can't hold out forever? You don't have a choice So while you are forced to take care of yourself your vibrant friends may be living in fools paradise How much better it would be for all of us if we would guard our health and preserve it while we have it rather than wait for the "handwriting on the wall" great old age is to have something wrong with you at middle age which is serious enough to take care of and then nurse long service Mrs Hutchison still has not retired from her lively interest in all things that are "moving" nor from watching the contemporary scene Mrs Hutchison the former Bessie Wyeth was born on a farm in Licking County Ohio August 2 1878 After graduating from Dennison University Granville Ohio she married Chalmers Hutchison owner of the Kansas City Mail in 1898 and they made their home in Kansas City Mo until 1902 when they moved to Fort Worth where he had acquired the Fort Worth Mail-Telegram In 1906 Hutchison and associates organized the old Fort Worth Record and he served as business manager a number of years resigning to devote his time to real estate development in the Fort Worth South Side continuing in this until his death In 1930 He had started in the newspaper business while a student in Muskingum College in Ohio Ile was a reporter on the college paper and correspondent for several newspapers in the area AFTER GRADUATION in 1882 he became business manager of the Mirror Olathe Kansas of which a brother was editor The newspaper burned and he took the position of private secretary to US Commissioner of Indian Affairs Hiram Price Department of the Interior in Washington DC In 1893 he returned to the newspaper busi- ness associating with his brother as co-owner and business manager of the Kansas City Mail Mrs Hutchison's first affiliations with women's organizations a activities were with the Woman's Wednesday Club which she joined in 1908 and the Mary Isham Keith Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution As the three Hutchison children reached school age the then new parent-teacher organization commanded her interest and was the particular field in which she has attained national status SHE HAS been a life member of the Texas Parent Teacher Association executive board since 1912 She was the organizing president of the Daggett Elementary School P-TA in 1910 and in 1911 was elected first president of the Fort Worth City Council of Parents and Teachers of which she was an organizer In 1912 she became the second president of the Texas Congress of Parent- Teachers Associations and in 1914 was elected national vice president of the Congress the first Texas woman to be so honored At the beginning of World War I in 1917 she was named by the National Fosdick Commission to aid work of organizations with girls and young women in areas where there were military encampments She helped organize a local Girls Service League in 1917 and assisted In the entertainment and welfare program of the local chapter of the American Red
