Naturally a hit album Ing the same title as the million-selling single quickly followed and so did other hit Don't Have to Be so Nice" and "Daydream" Why have they achieved success so quickly? Because the boys explain they not only believe in magic they also believe in music And because they feel so strongly about music they have been most selective about their public appearances They wouldn't for instance be caught dead on any show which turns out acts machine-gun fashion They will appear only with one other act as they recently did on a 19-day swing through the South with the Supremes on a college tour "It's the only way to tour" said Joe Butler 22-year-old drummer He's rangy the son of a retired New York policeman and he feels very strongly about what tours should be like "We believe in music" Joe said "You can't do a good show just singing one song Crowded revues with 10 acts are no good Kids want more We did a concert at the Cow Palace with 10 other acts 1 That's no show" Marblehead Mass after almost a lifetime in Greenwich Village where he was born He soon returned to music however John wrote ''Do You Believe in Magic?" and Steve whom they call the sound engineer was responsible for the arrangements But they do work together almost from the start of a song to the moment it is ready for production The boys got together a little more than a year ago in New York John and Zal met in the Village and joined forces Steve who still is partially paralyzed in his leg as the result of an auto accident when ha was 17 had played in swing and rock in' roll bands for several years went to Europe then returned and wound up in the Village too where he met and joined John and Zal Joe was the last to join the group He had played several dates with Steve on Long Island They became friends and when the group formed it was only natural Steve should have invited Joe They broke in their act during the folk era in the Village soon became well known but not for folk music Their sound was more tuned to pop and their success led to a record television and concert tours the young musician makes more money and draws more people" The suggestion that what they play smacks of the newest trend folk-rock brings protest from the boys Perhaps most outspoken is Zal Yanovsky 20-year- old lead guitarist from Toronto "There is no such thing as folk-rock There is creativity in music today We do interpretive music and improvisation" Steve suggested at i 5 point that it was the old jazz approach where the musicians really swung out with inner feelings But Zal wasn't quite sure that this was an accurate description He once spent 10 months on a kibbutz (collect farm) in Israel and then returned to play with various groups around the country ''We create" Zal declared "We've been around and we have seen things It shows in our music" a a a THERE IS NO official lead of this group but every one recognizes bespectactled John Sebastion 21-year-old guitar player as the musical leader His father is a classical musician John became disenchanted with the folk era gave it up to become a sailmaker in 4 i 4 ES Mel O' EM I AND' lA! ii inivil re tov 1 ETEctrq 1' 'Jo' I i The beloved spellbinding classicbrought magically to life by the wizard of entertainment!
