Christian's young quarterback Dan Car te missed an open receiver on the very first play Saturday afternoon and that seemed to be the old ball game for the Frogs After that things went from bad to worse to tragic as the Purples were pinned to the deck by their own offensive ineffectiveness and Nebraska's capable Cornhuskers From the coin flip until the bitter end the visitors were in complete control and flew back to their Big Eight Conference arguments with a 29-0 triumph k'4 4 t-k Kv JI v-- k4i7V A 11 4-" it i --N0 zki 1 '4- 1 4'16'-' "''V ''v'' dt s3A11 4 a ZAZ I 7 WAZ4t 4 "4 4: success moving the winless Christians in the first half and senior Shabay had no better luck in the second half as the Frogs failed to cross their home's touchdown stripe for the seventh consecutive this season T4M'1 By BILL VAN FLEET Star-Telegram Sports Editor AUSTIN The Rice Owls set up a defense to stop the rushing tactics of Bill Bradley and Chris Gilbert and dared Bradley to pass he Texas junior quarterback did pass for more yardage than any other Texas team under Darrell Royal had made in a single game and the Longhorns wound up swamping the Owls 28-6 in a swirling contest at Memorial Stadium Saturday night Bradley passed for one touchdown and set up the other three with long tosses against the close drawn de He completed 12 of 17 for 215 yards and four of the five incompletions been expected to sit out this year came in to play the last part of the game and he completed two more to give Texas 14 completions for 238 yards While the aerial show was going on the Longhorns' Ragan Gennusa and ran for two others going nine yards for one and a short step for the other The score would indicate a Texas runaway but it was by 49' TOP 1 :31 NIkoit4 011 f'kei 41'''-: 'V RICE RAN up 23 first downs and punted only once on the windy mild night Texas had 19 first downs but had a slim edge in passing 238 to 237 and in rushing 127 to 59 A tipoff on the wild night came on the first two possessions Texas marched 73 yards on 15 plays to score after the initial kickoff and Rice came right back to move 66 yards and tie it up at 6-6 with Rob Layne of Texas and Frank Pustka both missing extra point kicks Texas marched again on its next possession going 71 yards in seven plays but Rice fell afoul of the first of five interceptions when it tried to keep up the touchdown for touchdown pace and never was able to score again Texas moved 49 yards for another TD in the third and moved 53 yards in three plays for the final touchdown in the fourth -A iaestr4 Leinert-Led TT Raps SMU 21-7 THEY WERE awarded 18 possessions but were jammed behind their own 30-yard line on 13 of them Only twice did the Frogs pierce Nebraska's territory on a 33-yard pass by Shabay in the third quarter and on a fumble recovery in the fourth They didn't get so much as a first down out of either opportunity however The Frogs had a total offense of 115 yards and four first downs compared to the dominating Cornhuskers' 377 yards and 20 first downs TCU's defensive line hit the only successful licks for the home forces Nebraska hooked up for only one drive and that ended in the field goal Three of the Cornhuskers' touchdowns should be marked against TCU's offense They scored after a fumble in the first period an interception in the second period and then ran back another interception 39 yards for a touchdown in the third period THE FOURTH and final indignity was a 46-yard pass play with 10 seconds left in the game Linebackers James Vanderslice and Pat Walker safety Ted Fay and guard Larry Adams turned in notable performances for the Frogs' dogged delensemen Vanderslice and Walker were each credited with nine unassisted tackles Adams was marked for six unassisted stops and nine unassisted saves Beyond that TCU was shut out literally There was but 512 minutes gone when fullback Ken Post dropped a fumble into Mike Wynn's lap at the TCU 19 and a minute later NrJwaska was in
