Dal '9- 3 -k A is- f- 1 az: By JERRY BUCK By Associated Pms NEW YORK Every Saturday morning on television people clear out and little creatures come in to create a world of nonsense and m9vhem for the kiddies These are the animated car-to )ns that stretch from 8 am into the early afternoon on all three networks "King Kong" pace Ghost" "Fearless Fly" and others baby-sit for the children 30 million of them by the networks' rough count Some inhabitants of video's make believe world are cute and cuddly and their adventures are rather innocuous But are they all Over the years a degree Other organizations also say they are worried about the trend in cartoons "We occasionally point out that community interests are at stake and that parents must supervise viewing" said Brother Anthony Wallace of the National Catholic Education Association in Washington "We feel this is a situation where any worth while action that is going to be taken must be done at the local level" Mrs Pearce presiof the General Federation of Women's Clubs which claims to represent 11 million women said: "Our organization feels that no child should ever be so influenced by what he sees on television that he concludes that violence is an acceptable behavior" MR PIPER presides over a half-hour of tales and tricks for the kiddies Fridays on Channel 33 and also takes part in the "Fun Time" show each week-day The drawings of the new breed are more realistic and the stories generally pit a superhero against an equally strong and clever menace In "Super President" on 'NBC for instance the hero is the President of the United States a square jawed chief executive who jumps into cos-turn and ventures forth for personal combat whenever the country is endangered Sinister Professor Stacordo demands "the $1 billion your country Is spending for the Mars space shot" or he will destroy all plant life on earth with his defertilizing machine In the end Super President overcomes this threat and tosses the villain out of his space ship Then he rescues him All cartoon villains return for another try Among other where "action" gets a good workout are "The Fantastic Four" "Spider-Man" "Space Ghost" "Superman" "Super-boy" and "Johnny Quest" "The Viewer" cites a situation from "Johnny Quest" on CBS: "A crazed wheel ch a ire villain screeching 'Kill! Kill!" to his airborne monster cr ea ture as it swoops down on a boy's father in sight of the boy is likely to give the lad to say nothing of his young viewers nightmares" The American Council for Better Broadcasts of Madison Wis which operates the "Look Listen" opinion poll noted that "whereas last year parents seemed to be delighted that these cartoons kept children out from under foot this year they voice dissatisfacticn with all but a few of them" of surrealism has been creeping into the cartoons The in en mayhem of the "Tom and Jerry" genre is being eroded by a cadre of animinated superheroes "The Viewer" publishd by the National Audience Board said it found such shows as "Secret ui rre "Atom Ant" and "Cool McCool" genuinely funny Some such as "Journey to the Center of the Earth" actually de-emphasized violence it said What concerns the publication and some parents is "the new look in villains and situations which emphasize the 'warped and the weird' inister monsters and situations psychologically war pe supervillains a plethora of spider women and so on make the grownup with the children get a more balanced diet of program fare in the four straight hours of the Saturday bloc" said "The Viewer" The networks which have $50 million invested in cartoons say they have received few complaints Donald "Bud" Grant national da time program director at NBC was asked about the new trend in cartoons "Violence? They're based on action" he said ''We feel our Saturday morning programming is varied and balanced" An ABC spokesman said "This isn't real violence this is pretend iolenc lie added "We're not happy with the all-cartoon situation but every time a live program comes up against a cartoon it loses out in the ratings" for more enjoyable le '419' Ipt t'''' 74- i io I 016 1 F' 4't4g413 444 1 4 A2z4ie 4 4444'tztt r-4 4 -47igt It 7-1 iet c172- ty t- Is ill 4 i- A 4 UHfrvaltd COLOR ALuiiriC TENNikROTOR TENNTIRoToR COLOR ring MP' peni 1 who coon late: lectl univ rent Ti the for spol Our Ti Art' and mat wit few gem the ing is a two min icat the acrc som lege gem sear men Or age tim goal 25 any um 11 lege er than heft Li badl lecti solu nan tele' eel nesi find i pia) ruin five Ii Ing of diffi Ber any 1) pia A MUST FOR GOOD COLOR RECEPTION GET MORE STATIONS SEE ALL THE SPORTS EVENTS ENJOY MORE MOVIES AND SPECIALS "TV's better color getter PERFECT BLACK-AND-WHITE RECEPTION ROGER A READY Phone Sears Service ETars 11114 Be prepared for the new stations as they come on the air See your local dealer today and get all the details on how the world famous Alliance Tenna-Rotor will help you get all the new UHF stations li TV Clown's Real Face Is Familiar Model 11100 Larry's Radio TV Service 1303 Magnolia Ft Worth Texas Enjoy Color and New UIW Stations plus Regular VIIF TV Stations t-s Eighth Ave Radio TV Service 1905 Eighth Avenue Ft Worth Texas New futbewtowatie Model U-100 lust set It and Mtge It New futly-suto All-Channel TV Antenna Installed Westside Applimice Service 4729 Camp Bowie Blvd Ft Worth Texas Phil's TV Service Glen Rose Texas Gateway TV 8615 Highway 377 Ft Worth Texas 76126 Hurst Radio TV Service loi Pipeline Rd Hurst Texas 76053 Swan Antenna Service 5451 Lubbock Ft Worth Texas 76133 Electronics 117 Main Axle Texas 76020 Kirby Television Service 3454 Blue Bonnet Circle Ft Worth Texas 76109 Longhorn Delivery Installers 5177 River Oaks Blvd Ft Worth Texas Normal Roof 1 oi) Imial Southwestern TV Service 357412 Seminary Ft Worth Texas 95 Wilshire TV Service No 16 Wilshire Shopping Center Euless Texas Small fry in Fort Worth Dallas have a spot in the programming of KMEC-TV (UHF Channel 33) in the "Fun Time" show hosted by "Col Pervical Pembrock" a sad faced clown Featured in the Fun Time fun fare will be three different series of cartoon films "Mr Piper" Out of the Inkwell" and "Sinbad" Col Pembrock will be Joined each day by several youngsters for participation games The colonel actually Roger AL Ready is a familiar face to viewers though not in his present garb for he spent the past 34 years as news and sports announcer for WFAA-TV Ready got his start in the entertainment field in children's theater in his native New York Ile later attended Oklahoma University Ile has 18 years experience as announcer sports and newscaster and with children's shows on radio and television Iris wife Patricia is also an actress and singer The Readys have three children 1 1-747--0014-----7'3'r OA 10 -s-'-- lo 1 I 0 4)') 1 e72''' i 1 iw Jim Bowen Electronics (Phone: PE 2-3046) Ft Worth Texas Don't settle for blurry distorted viewing Let Sears correct your poor reception Art Rose Radio 8 TV Service 5613 Belknap Ft Worth Texas Color-Tenna 2308 Helen Ft Worth Texas doe! pier say! top on13 bor at i for on ha ye haWl yu CHARGE IT On Sears Revoking Charge ID -4 Sears Service Cenier The ALLIANCm Manufacturing Company Inc ALUANCE OHIO (Subsidiary of Consolidated Electronics Industries Corp) Maker of the Genie Automatic Garage Door Opener System ISears!
