Westminster knocks Tarleton State out of NAIA playoffs 45-yard pass in the end zone from Texan cornerback Mario De Santiago De Santiago had position on Tokar and had both hands on the ball as they fell to the natural turf in the left comer But when they rolled over it was Tokar who came up with the ball and the BY RICHIE Wynn Fort Worth Star-Telegram STEPHENVILLE Tarleton State's Cinderella season struck midnight last night with a resounding thud After sneaking into the National Assocation of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II playoffs and upsetting fifth-ranked St Mary's of the Plains Kan in the first round the Texans ran into reality last night Reality in the form of Westminster (Pa) which gave Tarleton a thorough 34-0 beating in their quarterfinal game before 3650 at Memorial Stadium The Titans 11-0 and defending NAIA Divison II champs will enter next week's semifinal game at Central Washington with a No I ranking and the nation's longest winning streak at 25 If they weren't impressed by Westminster's dynasty before the game the Texans are now believers "They have a tremendous team like we expected" said Tarleton coach Hal McAfee whose team finished 9-3 "We had a tough call against us early and we never recovered They never gave us a crack to get back into the game They just controlled us" The Titans scored on three consecutive possessions early in the game for a 21-0 halftime lead and then cruised to the victory Westminster got on the board with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter when all-America running back Brad Tokar stole quarterback Joe Micchia's the goal line on a 2-yard sweep The lead grew to three touchdowns when the Titans drove 51 yards on nine plays midway through the second quarter Micchia's I 5-yard keeper on the option was followed by fullback Matt Cmny's 3-yard scoring dive over left tackle "We didn't make any breaks for ourselves and they didn't give us any" said defensive tackle Shawn Toliver who led Tarleton with 12 tackles "It's tough to beat a team like that without any big plays or turnovers" Tokar rambled through Tarleton's defense for 183 yards including 119 in the decisive first half Micchia upped his season touchdown total to 27 with three scoring tosses on 10 of 17 passing for 106 yards It could've been worse had not wide open receiver Dave Fgley dropped a pass at Tardeton's 20 on the game's third play De Santiago then stopped two Titan drives with a blocked field goal and an interception on another co-possession pass at Tarleton's 3 While Westminster's offense moved almost at wi II Tarleton barely moved at all The Texans had only one first down and 39 yards in the first half and finished with 149 total yards Quarterbacks Eric Lugo and Jimmy Sides combined for 3 of 13 passing for 25 yards and two interceptions Westminster went through the motions in the second half but it also did that better than the outmanned Texans Tokar's 54-yard run set up Micchia's 116-yard touchdown lob pass to Mike Beggy on the Titans' second possession of the third quarter After Andre Borovvicz' interception at Tarleton's 47 Micchia then hit Foley with a 19- yard scoring strike for a 34-0 lead after three quarters The Texans moved deep into Titan territory only once turning the ball over on downs at Westminster's 27 early in the fourth quarter Tarleton finished with 10 punts and I I penalties Westminster amassed 302 yards rush- ing and 508 total "We're a young team" McAfee said "We only lose seven seniors and this experience will help us next season We came a long way this
