e'en gain more Imowlidge and understanding from the corn- iercials Well maybe But more likely we'll simply view Twin Peaks as an unusual series It is a little different It is more moo4y than the average prime-time soap It its 'less direct It lingers where most 41ows don't even stop It has some of Ole longest faces you'll ever see congregated in one program Twin Peas begins as though it were 4 beautifully crafted travelogue of the Pacific Northwest We're not told exictly what state we're in but we do know that we're five miles from the Canadian border and I 2 miles from the itate line As a little plus we even get to see how 4 Mill saw blade is sharpened one tooth at a time Riveting Later much later it seems we finally get to the main story A fisherman discovers a body washed up on the beach and he cries The police come and a policeman cries The dead girl's parents cry so do her classmates especially her best friend and her secret boyfriend Even the school principal cries There's a lot of dying in Twin Peaks ''4' And while all this is going on the rich folks up at the lodge are trying to convince a group of Norwegians that they oiight to buy into this Northwest wondetland There is a quality of life that is the very best this country has to offer" they am told Another girl is found She is alive but she has been beaten and raped repeatedly Lynch is having fun with Twin He is yanking his audience back aid forth like the new drapes He shows yOu something pretty then he covers it w)th an ugly event It may be a new technique for televi- sion but it's old hat for Lynch Anyone who has seen his films Blue Velvet Dine or Eraserhead knows that this is'not an ordinary filmmaker Lynch is weird plain and not so simple And he loves weird characters Here just a few: I FBI Agent Dale Cooper Kyle MacLachlan plays the part of this fastidious lawman MacLachlan knows Lynch's characters the actor starred in both Dune and Blue Velvet Cooper is into the town of Twin Peaks to investigate the murder but he is not so single-minded that he can't enjoy his surroundings He details his every nwe with a tape-recorded message to Diane his home-office contact t'Diane lunch was S631 at the Lamp Lighter Inn I had a tuna fish sandwich on whole wheat slice of cherry pie and clip of coffee Damn good food Diane ilyou ever get up this way that cherry pie is worth a stop I almost forgot I've got to find out what kind of trees these are They're really something" Sheriff Harry Truman Mithael Ontkean plays one of the more 0onnal" characters in this series Harty Truman grew up in the town and he knows where all the skeletons are buried Or at least he thought he did He is having an affair with the owner of the kcal sawmill 'in Catherine Martell Piper Laurie plays the manager of the Packard Sawmill She is mean and ruthless and ppenly contemptuous of her husband he hates her brother's widow Jocelyn Packard Catherine is having an affair ith the town's leading money grabber Jocelyn Packard Joan Chen Plays the part of Packard the rich widDIN who owns the Packard Sawmill She Is beautiful has a thing for the sheriff but has to battle her sister-in-law all the lime She is powerful but vulnerable she's an outsider Bobby Briggs Dana Ashbrook 17 plays this high school senior Bobby was in love with the dead girl and briefly a suspect in her murder He's a brooding kid with a hot temper and a big mouth He's having an affair with a married waitress at the Double Diner Running quickly through some of the others Peggy Lipton plays the part of Norma Jennings the owner of the Double Diner She's having an affair with Ed Hurley (Everett McGill) who owns Big Ed's Gas Farm Ed is married to the eye-patch woman who yanks on the drapes And there's a local psychiatrist who wears ear plugs all the time Of course there's an entire high school of messed-up kids with dark secrets Some are jocks some are bikers some are rich and some aren't But they're all a little weird The trouble is Lynch tries so hard to make his characters unusual that they all end up being alike Twin Peaks becomes its own parody at times That's not to say that it isn't worth viewing It is The film work is extraordinary and the scenery beautiful The two-hour premiere was shot outside Seattle but unfortunately the rest of the series will be done back in Los Angeles with only occasional second-unit work done on location There is no one story to this series It is a serial drama that will play out slowly over the length of its run You get the feeling that it is far better at raising questions than it is at answering them but then it might not matter The story probably isn't as important as the way it's told Twin Peaks is not though you've heard differently a new form of television It looks a little different but it is Peyton Place with a twisted vision It still has commercial breaks it still has strong music to carry us through the actionless moments and it still has to appeal to a mass audience to survive It is different only in a technical sense Probably no show on television is as directly linked with its executive producer as Twin Peaks is to David Lynch Mark Frost a Hill Street Blues alumnus is also an executive producer a co-creator a writer and a director in this series but no one even whispers his name Lynch's name does bring a certain attention to this series and that can be exploited by the publicity department at the network But his name is by no means a guarantee that Twin Peaks will be a popular success Dune was a dismal disappointment Eraserhead had only a cult following and people are still trying to figure out just what Blue Velvet was all about Twin Peaks deserves a better fate than those efforts ABC is to be commended for
