I Sect ion 2 Page 6 I Fort Worth Star-Telegram Monday AM June 5 1989 TELEVISION NBC experimenting with summer series Arte Chapman Television Summer is upon us The two undeniable indicators are already obvious school is out this week and the networks are in reruns If the past is truly a blueprint for the future most of us won't be watching as much television as we normally do The longer days invite us to stay outdoors more than usual If we did come in what would we watch? The summer drop-off in viewing levels didn't bother the networks much in the past When the fall seasons kicked off everyone was back ready for more But that hasn't been the case for a couple years now With the growth of independent stations and the proliferation of cable channels more and more viewers are testing the non-network waters during the summer and not all of them switch back in the fall That's why NBC Entertainment President Brandon Tartikoff has longed for a 52-week television season Ifis belief is the networks can't afford to let their audiences go wandering around the dial even for the summer It sounds easy enough just schedule more new shows from June to September It's not that easy in reality The cost of production has soared in the past decade and putting on good new shows in the summer simply isn't cost effective It is something of a vicious circle Advertisers won't pay premium rates in the summer because they know fewer people are watching The networks can't get more people to watch without improving the programming It is an economic impasse But Tanikoff is taking a small step toward breaking the impasse by putting on three new series and bringing back new Higimay to heaven episodes later this summer Actually NBC needs to use the sum: mer to test out a few shows The net- work is so successful in its regular fall prime-time programming that it has few opportunities to allow new shows in the mix Using the summer is one way around that No air dates have been set but there are two new shows on tap most likely to premiere in August: Knight and Daye starring Jack Warden (Clazy Like a Fox) and Mason Adams (Lou Grant) as a one-time ra- dio ad reluctantly reunited after 40 years Hope Lange plays Adams' wife The series comes from Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandell who wrote Laverne and Shirley and the hit movie Splash 13 East set in a hospital and starring Diana Bellamy as a supervising nurse and Ellen Regan as a trainee One other half-hour comedy yet to be picked from among shows in development for NBC also will make a bow this summer while Highway to Heaven the hour drama starring Michael Landon as an Earth-roving angel will return with 10 new episodes It was absent this past season CBS is introducing one new comedy series Doctor Doctor this month The new program stars Matt Rover (Max Headroom) as an idealistic young MD trying to cope with the pressures of high-tech medical care It premieres June 12 in the Kate Al lie time period Kate tt Al lie will move to 7 pm replacing the canceled Live In Unfortunately CBS also is planning to once again let viewers see the really had shows that weren't good enough to show throughout the year by reviving the CBS Summer Plavhouse a weekly display of busted pilots ABC will air new episodes of Hooperman and in August ABC will premiere the new Diane Sawyer-Sam Donaldson news magazine tentatively titled Prime Time ABC will also have prime-time baseball on Thursdays in June and July The rest of the changes will be done by simply moving the schedule around Coach will move to a better time period on Tuesdays after Roseanne June 20 Hooperman will return June 14 in the Wednesday time period vacated by Coach Keep up now Have Faith will move off Tuesday nights and onto Sundays filling half of the hour left empty by the cancellation of Moonlighting Thursday Night Baseball premieres June 8 and runs through July 27 in the time periods now held by canceled shows Of course all of this mixing and matching and swapping time periods creates its own set of problems How are we supposed to keep up with all the changes and who wants to get involved in a series when you know it's only going to be on for a few weeks?
