Cooper Ware flipped a 4-yard pass to Tracy Good for the first touchdown The swiftness of it all may have left the Owls a bit befuddled A few plays after the ensuing kickoff quarterback Victor Lay and fullback Jamie Dimond clanged together on a botched hand-off attempt and Tray Hooper recovered for UH at the Owls 8 Ware's 2-yard pass to Paul Smith made it 17-0 midway through the quarter On Houston's next possession Ware shot a bullet to Emmanuel Hazard running free in the middle of the field and it became a 79-yard scoring play culminating an 84-yard move requiring two plays and 39 seconds Next the Owls sent Tom Quinn on an encouraging 15-yard sweep but it ended in a fumble and another Hooper recovery this time at the Temple 30 Penalties reduced the Cougs to Anderson's 43-yard field goal with 1:43 still left in the quarter Time enough of course for the defense to smother the Owls and force a short punt The quarter finally ended after a tidy 57 minutes with the score 27-0 and Houston sitting on the Temple 14-yard line Clang clang clang clang The second quarter whizzed by in a mere 47 minutes with Ware throwing two more scoring strikes for a 41-0 halftime lead The Owls trooped to the dressing room to review their travel itinerary The principal matter on the second-half agenda was allowing Ware to set the record which was accomplished on two quick third-quarter drives culminating in scoring tosses to Hazard (who had 12 receptions for 193 yards and three TDs) and Smith It could have been worse for the Owls backup quarterback David Klingler had two TD passes called back and Anderson possibly exhausted from kickoff and extra point duties missed three of six field goal attempts At the end the only remaining point of concern was the well-being of Houston's poor mascot who insisted on attempting a pushup for every clang of the bell He ended the evening lying pooped on the carpet like the Owls P15580R13 35000-mile warranty Economy priced 1 At En 11-ioro after an absence of a few months discovering that nothing has changed It still isn't a safe place for Owls The flock Berndt brought to the Astrodome yesterday was from Temple not Rice but the result had a familiar ring They looked like a troupe of big fat red pigeons to the Houston Cougars who ran and shot their way through a 65-7 laugher After his brush with "College Football's Greatest Show" Berndt said "I really didn't think it would be this brutal" The big moment for the Owls (0-5) came With 3:43 remaining when Efrain Cabrera ran 52 yards for the team's first touchdown in four games The list of accomplishments for the Cougars (3-0) is somewhat longer beginning with quarterback Andre Ware who hit 30 of 45 passes for 413 yards He also threw for seven touchdowns breaking the Southwest Conference record set by Texas Gary Kubiak against Rice in 1981 The seven scoring tosses also tied the conference team record held by Houston "Just playing a little pitch and catch" said Ware who is only three touchdown passes shy of Kevin Murray's league standard of 48 "It's not that big a deal but I'm glad I got the record "It seemed like there'd been so many times I'd get to five and then stop I can put it behind me now Temple they came hard at first But we took the fight out of them early like we do so many teams" Yes another day at the office for the Cougs 32 first downs 613 total yards (525 passing) 65 yards with every snap And they snapped it 94 times Although the Owls watched footballs whizzing past their ears all night they never managed to pick one off and contributed nine fumbles losing five (three of which were recovered by UH tackle Tray Hooper) "I think they got a little -nervous" Cougar coach Jack Pardee said "The main thing that impressed me really was their defense" Berndt said "They shut us down (193 total yards) and when that happens and they're throwing that much and you don't intercept any it's going to be a long night" "It may not seem like it" Pardee said "but we get a lot out of a game like this We need it to stay sharp and if we can stay this sharp we can compete with anybody" "If we stay this sharp" Ware said "We can beat anyone in the country Playing this way we could beat the 49ers" The two teams also combined for 27 penalties for 271 yards The Owls doubtless will return to Philadelphia with fond memories of a first quarter that seemed to last about a week and served to introduce them to a group of musically inclined UH students on the sideline clanging a bell once for every point as the score mounted Temple forced Houston to settle for a field goal on its first possession but the Cougars merely were limbering up 'The second time they got the ball they required 42 seconds to move 67 4597 1 4997 "go 1111 dolt 11111Tiltot
