1011. The Sixty-Second Congress convened in extraordinary session Tuesday tit uoon. For the firet time in about sixteen years the Democrat were able to organize the House of Representatives and take the reins of Korernment in that branch of the National Legislature. Hon. Champ Chirk was elected speaker and took th rhair amid deafening npplauee.

The Senate ia still nominally Republican. What the session will bring forth In the way of legislation is a matter of speculation, but it will doubtless prove to lie one of the most interesting sessions in years. The Democrats feel that it is squarely up to them to "make good" with the ieople, audit is well that they mm it that way. The country has lost one of its most distinguished and useful citizens and public officials in the death of Dr. Seaman A.

Knapp.the widely known expert of the National Pepartment of Agriculture. lie had made a great many valuable investigations in his line of work in different parts of the world, and his services have leen of untold Ixmefit to the farmers of the United States, and especially to those of the South. The country can ill afford to lose such men as Dr. Knapp, and his place, made vacant by his death, will be hard to fdl. I Raleigh waged a vigorous and successful campaign in behalf of hfr new Y.

M. C. A. building and won out in a walk. She started out to raise for this purpose and thought that she had set her stakes high at that.

Rut the campaign wound up Saturday night with a total subscription of thus exceeding her nim by more than Goal for the Capital City of the State. To the newspapers of the city is due" much of the credit for this splendid success. Quite a number of new subncribers have been added to the Gold leaf's mailing list during the past week. Several of them have come through the mails, along" with cheering "words of praise and commendation forthe clean, newsy paper we are giving the IeopIe of Henderson and Vance county. Some have voluntarily dropped in at the office and left their subscriptions.

Others have been picked up here and there. This is all very encouraging indeed. Let jthe good work goright along. While we are glad to give assurance of the fact that there is nothing at all alarming about his present condition, nevertheless his many friends throughout the State and elsewhere will le pained to learn that Mr. Thud R.

Manning has leen cou-tined to his room for several days. But it is fondly hoped that he may soon regain his strength and be able to get out again. Please notice the date on 3'our label this week, and if you find your subscription in arrears we- shall be very glad indeed to hear from you at once. It takes money to produce a first class newspaper, and the Gold Leaf will therefore have to run on the cash basis. It is a good practice to keep jour subscription paid iuj advance, Some fellow with a lot of idle curi-ity in his makeup has been wondering what Ilendereonjwoman will be first to apjH'hr on the streets of the city, wearing one of those harem skirts.

It is suggested that whoever she may tie, if be she will, she should at ouce be awarded one of Mr. Carnegie's hero medals. President Diax, of Mexico, has remodeled his cabinet and expects this to pacify the fnsurrectos. But what the latter are contending for for Diat himself to get down and out, and in all probability this alone will put au end to the turmoil in the so-called republic just to the south of us. -r i The papers on? already beginuing to remind the voitere that if they fail to pay their pjll tax by Majj 1st, they cannot vote in the election! this year.

This is a very timely reminder and should be heeded by every Toter who has not already secured his poll tax receipt from the sheriff. -One of our exchanges says that the president of Mexico pronounces his name not "Die-as." a some have supposed. Ourjcon-temporarj further states that! the insurrectos make the first 'part "jacfc" instead of "dee." A cyclone swept a few days ago, doing great damage. Bat it didn't scare those Pennsylvania Republicans half so bad as the election did last November. I ten Easter Monday April 17tK.

Quite a number of people attended the "honor roll exercises" of the city graded school Tuesday morning and thoroughly enjoyed them. At 11 o'clock the school body assembled in the large auditorium and the exercises opened by repeating the Lord's Prfcyer in concert, led by Superintendent Alderman. A Scripture selection from Prov. 22. 1-8, was then recited in concert, followed by a song, "Tis Our Festal Day." and a poem, "The Dandelion." Superintendent Alderman read the roll of honor, eighty-two pupils rising as their names were colled.

Forty-five of these were boys. These had not been tardy or absent a single time during the past month, and their work and deportment averaged 95 or more. Littls Irving Mangum's sweet, birdlike voice in "Little Willie Rankin" brought forth much applause, as also did a well rendered instrumental soly by Earle Harris. Twenty-five boys in costumes sang a cowboy song, led by Clyde Finch, and did it so well as to call forth a sound of hearty applauae at its conclusion. A song, "Anchored," by the school, brought the exercises to a close.

To the Editor of the Gold Leaf: I desire to call attention through your columns to the changes in the Public Health laws regarding contagious diseases, aa passed by the last General Assembly. A recent case of exposure to smallpox presented itself in our graded schools, where the parents of the child took nil the precautions as required by the recent changes in the law, as published in a recent Legislative edition of the Raleigh News and Observer. As this law does not go into effect until May 1st, 1911, the superintendent had no other alternative than to exclude the child from the school-room until all danger had passed from this exposure.

After August, 1911, there will be no quarantine established against smallpox, as universal vaccination ia conceded to be the only means of preventing the same. I would suggest that you fmblisb. the essential changes in the new aw for the enlightenment of the public on this most important subject. Respectfully yours, B. G.
