5. Only on cession of the Schley court of inquiry was held today. An adjournment until Monday was taken at 1 o'clock in order to allow court and counsel to recuperate after an arduous week's labor. Practically the only witness of the day was Lieutenant Commander Albon C. Hodgson, who was navigator of the flagship Brooklyn during the campaign of 1S98, and almost his entire time was taken up with the reading of correspondence between himself and Admiral Schley concerning an alleged colloquy between them during the battle off Santiago which the witness was reported to have detailed to a newspaper correspondent.

The correspondence has been published and1 this fact rendered the proceeding of comparatively little popular interest. Lieutenant Doyle was also on the stand again, but only for the purpose of correcting his former testimony. During the day Judge Advocate Lemly made another statement concerning Admiral Sampson's dispatch of May 30, 1S93, Tl.itlng especially to the admiral's use of the word "Santiago" whore it was alleged he had Intended to use the word "Clen-fuegos." Will Sampson be a WitnessP There is much interest in yesterday's episode concerning Admiral Sampson and there Is still doubt as to whether he will be a witness. It will remain with Admiral Schley and his counsel to say for what day, if any day, he Fhall be called. The controversy as to the admiral's meanln? in Ms "Dear Schley" dispatch of May 20 has in no wise been abated by the tentative agreement as to his being summoned.

Counsel on both sides had before them this morning copies of the dispatch and each was trying strenuously to Tiring the other to their view of the case. The first of the witnesses of a previous day who were recalled to correct testimony was Lieutenant Doyle, who was on the Brooklyn during tho battle off Santiago. He made a number of changes in phraseology. His attention was called to an error in his former testimony in stating the distance the Brokolyn stood out from the Moro at Santiago in reply to a question from the court. He had formerly placed this distance at two or three miles, but he had erroneously based his statement on the I02 for June 28, instead of May 28.

Looking at the log for May 28 hs found only one estimate of tho distance out, placing it at seven miles. When Lieutenant Doyle was excused These helped the University to win, but good luck enabled the Emporia boys to score twice, once on a fake play, and once never give a testimonial for anything, I make an exception in favor of Peruna, as I consider it of exceptional value." Mrs. M. Van Vrancken, Dodds left guard Keith agreed that the papers should again be printed in the record. Captain Lemly then requested that all the papers in Admiral Schley's possession bearing upon the case be supplied, and Mr.

Rayner replied for the admiral that he (Admiral Schley) had no more papers. Lieutenant Commander Albon C. Hodgson was then called to continue his testimony of yesterday. He was asked by Captain Lemly about his correspondence with Admiral Schley concerning what the judge advocate denominated a "newspaper colloquy, and Captain Lemly replied that this was the witness' own characterization. Two of Kansas' touchdowns were made by pretty fake plays, in which the halts went against the left sdde of the Emporia line as if they had the ball, while the ball was passed, with some delay to the full back, who went around the other way and got the scores. Jenkinson did this twice, and the gains made were about twenty-five yards each time.
