at second -ins matter. Saturday, February 23, 1J 84. OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE COl.YTY Wra. Caffroy, "EAlter DOINGS AT SANTA FE Tlio Territorial Republican Cen- tral Committee hive callt'tl a con vention at Santa Fe on tlie 3rd of May, to elect two delegates to tlie National Republican convention, and tlie number of delegates from each county apportioned as follows Bernalillo, 12 Colfax, 4 Mora, Dona Ana, Socor ro, 8 Grant, 5: Lincoln, 4 Km Valencia, 12; Santa Fe, San Miguel, 14 Taos, G. Santa Fe, N.

Eeb. 18. At a meeting of the Republican Central committee, held here to-day, it was decided to hold the Tern to rial convention in Santa Fe on May 3rd, for the election ot dele gates to the national convention in Chicago. The legislature was organized by chosing Jose Armijo Vigil, of Socorro county, presieent of the council, Amado Chaves, ot Videncia county, speaker of the House. Both branches are in con trol of the Republicans.

The Democrats attempted to steal a march by premature organization of the. council in their interest, but as their pioccedings were irregular and will not be organized by the Governor or the lower house, their action will dv.vthem no good. Gov ernor Sheldon and Secretary Ritch ara determined to enforce law and ordc. Tue Territorial legislature met on the 18th instant, and the honorable gentlemen from Valencia was there, too, audit was not long before the authorities and owers that be, were thrown into a perfect uproar, and that old, stoepy town was waked tin to such a state of confusion, it even surprised the oldest inhabitants. Col.

J. Franco Chaves raise the storm by or- trer and cornish roller mill, one through the operations of which none ot the precious metal can escape. It has a capacity of red uc ing about 8 tons of ore p2r day, of 24 hours. It is proposed to work the mill some two months yet before the clean-up. Let people stand prepared to hear one of the best reports ever made in New Mexico or Colorado, where the clean-up is made manifest.

Contiguous to the "American," Gill's mine, is the -'Diamond Crown," owned by Messrs Moore, Whitney, Roeber and Pliugston, throug'i which the American lead t-oubtless runs, and the proprietors feci, that they too, are destined favorites of Dame Fortune. We could write much moro of "Nogal, its present and foreshadowed future, but neither time nor space will permit. We will, at no distant day, recur to it again. Meanwnile we cannot resist giving it as our unbiased judgment, that Nogal (walnut) will develop as one of the richest mineral producing sections of theTerritorv or country A TRIP TO NOGAL. On Wednesday morning we accepted an invitation extended us by Nat Moore, to ride with him to Nogal, and in his company, and that of Joshua Wayne, we made the trip behfnd a brisk span of nit, les, arriving at our objective point at the hour of noon.

After partaking ot suirptuous dinner, prepared by the deft hands of Mrs. Moore, B. M. Whitney reigned up in front of Wayne's store with a span of mules, and invited us to accompany him to Gill's mine. This was just in our hand, and we freely accepted, and were soon wheeling through Dry Gulch.

The first thing which attracted our attention was the placier property of Chase Ilockradle, stretching over a territory of some two miles. Months and much money have been expended by the enterprising proprietors, in building sluiceways from the head ot Nogal Canon, and around to Dry Gulch through which to convey adequate water for their works, and which is now well nigh secured, and early in the ensuing month operations will be vigorously prosecuted, lliis is no experiment, as much money lias already been secured in the gulch in years long past. The original discoverer was named McPherson, who, in '72, while prosecuting his work, was killed by the Indians. Some have it, that Mc was a partner ot Gill's, but he was not. All operations heretofore have been dt.no on a small scale, but they will now be pushed for all that money and energy will be worth, and that a fortune in- vites, lind wiil speedily reward, there can be no doubt.

Soon we arrived in front of Jer ry Jlockrauie residence, adjoin ing which Gov. Chase has erected a spneious building, which will soon bo occupied by hiin and wife as a suburban home. About 3 o'clock, p. we arrived at W. Gill's Fletch er's mill in that section of Dry Some scientists assert that the Gulch, which is localized under 's" the first of the the name ot Gulch.

A white man, blue-blooded, Lnd a good deal to do in launching Fred on this sphere, and now Fred proposes working the blood back, nnd his wife ain't a-Fred to help him. A New York paper tells us that a Chinaman went into the ladies bin on the ferryboat, and took a seat beside an Irish market woman, lie seemed to want to make himself agreeable, and rubbing his hands remarked, ''Belly cold." The yve man looked at him with an air of contempt, and replied "If you'd put your shirt inside your pants, your belly wouldn't be hathtn blaggard." SANTA FE. N. Feb.

15th, 15.84. EtiTon Leader The settled gloom and op prcssive quiet which came down upon this ancient city immediately after the close of tho Tertio Celebration, and has rested upon it ever since, has at last been broken, The bill providing for a legislature has become a law and the solons are coming to the Capitol by every train; each member has one or more friends who come with him for company, or pleasure, or as adviser, or something-, and the saloon men are happy. The Central Republican Committee is called together for Monday, and it will either call a convention to send delegates to the Chicaeo convention or will 6elect some one itself, probably the former The Democratic Committee is called for to-morrow, but wherefore, and whv, no fellow can find out, I presume they thought if the Rcjiublican Committee met on Monday, in would be a good thing to do, and they would just, get in a little ahead and have theirs Saturday, being determined to be ahead in something The message of tho Governor is a very able document. He urges particulary upon the legislature the necessity of a public school system after the plan adopted in the states, and calls their attention to the startling and humiliating fact that the percentage of illiteracy in New Mexico is greater than anywhere else iti the Union, lie also favors a railroad commissioner to fix farts and freights on our railroads. The adoption of a fence law of some kind, and the establishment of a penitentiary Also an amendment to the Revenue law, providing for an assessor in each county and the election ot prosecuting attorneys in each county.

The members who have already arrived, seem to be in earnest about reforming some of our laws, and unless they get into a wrangle at the outset over some contested seats, there ought to be a good r. rawtorci w.ii.h llian lliay be Tl, rimnrt kI.myvg llmr hand, and proposes to go to trial under the itdictment lor murder. The citizens who have started their warfare on the Jutgo will have to get somebody to hel,) them let go before long, and the further 'hey go, the worse is their condition.

It is expected that important changes will be made in Territorial affairs at this session, though it is understood that no appointments will be made until toward tho end of the session, in order that mem bers will give their time to legislation instead of wrangling over nominees. Our District Court is in session, and there is not a single criminal case of any importance, and it has been two years since there was a murder trial here, which speaks well for our law-abiding proclivities. The high water lias not reached us yet, in fact, the whiskey is a good deal higher than the water but the weather is disagreeable in all varieties, which is something entirely out of the common order. The Democratic legislature of Ohio can not 6top from its absorbirfg work of gerrymandering the Congressional districts to give aid to its distressed citizens. The state of Ohio is able to givo relief to all her needy citizens without outside aid, but her legislature is totally unfit to act in the present emergency. John C.
