ACCOUNTS" SAVINGS ACCOUNTS QUESTION-. What Is the moccasin flower?. * * * ANSWER: The moccasin flower; the state flower of Minnesota, is a rare wild flower. It is a Cypripedium, a genus of hardy bchids, known as Lady-slippers. The pink Lady- slipper orchid or moccasin flower, is found in deep, shady woods. It is associated with pine trees. Colonies of the plants may be found growing near isolated species of pine. It thrives in a very acid soil. The moccasin flower gets its. name from the shape of its pink flowers. Each flower- has a pouch or rounded sac which looks like a slipper or moccasin. Occasionally, a pure white flower is found. The attractive flowers are fragrant and contain nectar which draws bees. .Many of the hardy Lady-slipper orchids may be naturalized in the wild garden. The moccasin flower, a native orchid, should" be left untouched in the woods. It seldom survives transplanting but multiplies rapidly in its native habitat. 5-24 (Keven O'SheaofParkside, Pa., wins a prize for this question.
