WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 23 1996 7 IS THE MIAMI HERALD INTERNATIONAL EDITION I US NEWS: CAMPAIGN '96 Outspoken lawmaker faces tough challenge in California district CAMPAIGNING ON LONG ISLAND: Carolyn McCarthy speaks to voters at train station in Garden City Neophyte gun-control candidate has made herself the key issue trol she advocates controlling assault weapons and handgun purchases He opposes
