Texas was a poem "Mr Johnson Goes to Washington" published in the Fort Worth Star- Telegram The author was 14-year-old Jenny Lind Porter: Mr Johnson was Lyndon Baines Johnson Both have gone on to better things Dr Jenny Lind Porter came back to her native city of Fort Worth Tuesday to read a poem she wrote in tribute to Mrs Danforth president of the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers Dr Porter who lives in Austin is head of the English Department of Texas Lutheran College at well as the youngest poet laureate in the history of Texas She was born in Fort Worth in 1927 the daughter of Mr and Mrs Drue Porter who resided at 1658 Westmoreland Place A graduate of Paschal High School she received both a BA degree with distinction and a MA from Texas Christian University In 1957 Jenny Lind Porter received a PhD degree in English from the University of Texas She was 27 years old the youngest woman ever to receive a PhD from that university Dr Porter has done post-doctoral work in French and English beyond her doctorate degree Dr Porter lives a dual role as poet and teacher She reconciles her two professions because both require working with words The opening line of the title-page poem from her book "In the Still Cave of the Witch Posey" reads: "What I have done with words is love them" Dr Porter has loved words since the age of 3 when she first learned to read Her love of poetry and music she credits to her mother who read poetry to her during her childhood in Fort Worth Dr Porter has never stopped reading Her college education was financed largely through scholarships and hard work and Dr Porter stresses the need for discipline in artists and their media "Poets like musicians must practice their scales" she commented So far she sees her own work as NGE In her keynote address for the annual conference of First District Texas Congress she outlined the theme for the third year of her administration "We the P-TA Participate in the Community Story" The first two years of her administration spotlighted cooperation with the home and the schools "The P-TA is fundamentally school-oriented we are the lay group that works the closest with the schools" the state president noted "But we also must be concerned with the welfare of the child in the community" She requested that attention during the 1965-1966 school year be turned to matters of youth protection and development strengthening of church ties and participation and cooperation with the various service organizations ncerned with the welfare of youth Mrs Danforth and Mrs Carey Snyder also of Fort Worth are representing the state executive board at the conference Mrs Snyder is state vice president for Region One which includes First District Delegates from 13 counties are attending darkness And where a traveler had stumbled shall he look up And continue his journey unafraid" A musical tribute to the state president was presented by Charles Brinkley soloist and Oris Baldwin who
