period and a 34-yard boot in the second at the Aggie 44 Since the ball had changed hands briefly it was a Texas first down Wade connected with Talbert again for nine then hit hint again for eight stopping the clock at 2:50 Out of End Zone honor Thursday for they were facing an inspired team The Aggies played a superb defensive game harrying Longhorn runners constantly and putting repeated pressure on the Texas passers They played with a fury that must have gladdened the hearts of old A ggies everywhere whether they were in the stands on this sodrien misty day or were watching the nationally-televised contest in their living rooms But if the old Aggies were proud the Longhorn supporters were wild at the finish They had been numbed as the battling Aggies scored on two lightning aerial thrusts once in the second period and again in the third and carried a 13-3 lead into the fourth Dramatic Drive Press Wireohoto first period of Texas-Aggie contest at College Station Thursday Panic too delegate and would accept the trip Illinois last went to the Rose Bowl in 1951 The two team were tied for the conferencc lead in 1953 but Michigan State got the nod in a vote decision that year Coach Duffy Daugherty also took his Spartans to Pasadena in 1955 when MSU was second in the standings to Ohio St at which had made the coast trig the previous year It was a wonderful victory for Illinois Coach Pete Elliott who must be credited with the comeback of the fall after his discouraging 2-7 record last year Michigan State fumbled away a scoring chance in the second period when Boger Lopes let loose of the ball on the Illinois 12 The rough luck continued right down to the end of the half Sophomore Fullback Dave McCormick threw a long bomb that looked like a touchdown pass on the last play of the second period Matt Snorton apparently had it but then let the ball dribble through his fingers MSU again was knocking on the scoring door in the third period driving down to the Illinois 20 Incomplete passeJ stopped this threat The Spartans made a good drive in the fourth quarter going to the Illinois 10 before thc superb Illinois defense stiffened to allow the winners to rose in one wild cheer as Jim Willenborg intercepted the next Texas pass but he tumbled to the ground outside the end zone and it was not a valid interception Now there was 2:34 left and Green slashed for five yards to the 13 Wade killed the clock by dashing the ball to the ground but the Longhorns didn't need that for a double offsides was signalled and it was still first down with 2:15 left Wade passed toward Talbert again and it was almost but not quite intercepted Carlisle Tallies Next Wade found Phil Ilarris sophomore halfback sprintin4 down the right sideline and connected for 14 yards and a first down at the one There was 1:46 left Stockton got the call but was stacked Texas used its final time out and stopped the clock with 1:22 left and Tommy Ford and Carlisle came racing in Carlisle kept the ball and barely nudged across for the touchdown It didn't matter that Carlisle slipped trying to pass for two points for there was not enough time for the Aggies Jim Hudson killed the final threat by intercepting a Jim Keller pass Texas had the ball at the Aggie 22 as time ran out Keller had thrown the two Aggie touchdown passes first con fleeting with short-statured Tray-Turn to Steers on Page "Actually we didn't throw as much in the first thee quarters as we had intended to Our plan was to keep mixing 'cm up But it didn't seem to be any good until that last quarter" Carlisle also thought the Longhorns would have done better on a dry field "It was pretty bad out there and it was tough trying to run the option play" he related Questioned about the success of the Aggie air attack Duke said he thoght the Aggies would pass more than they did "Of course they almost did too much didn't they?" he grinned GAME AT A GLANCE MIAMI CINCINNAll 24 First Downs 15 25 Yards Star-Telegram Writer AUSTIN Nov was less than six minutes left to play in the fourth quarter and you didn't need to look at the scoreboard in the south end to know who was leading Not if you were standing near the Longhorn bench The faces were those of despair disappointment and in some cases downright anger But in a few seconds it was to be a completely different picture From the time Texas started its drive with 5:22 remaining to play the Steer bench came to life like it probably hasn't in any other game this season Of course there were some skipped heartbeats when John Brotherton intercepted on the Aggie 48 but when he fumbled and Tom Stockton recovered for Texas the Longhorn bench went wild Darrell Royal was yelling to his players on the field but they probably heard nothing he said because of the terrific roar from the stands f' 4 Ta Royal tried to send in Carlisle and Tommy Ford but the teams already had lined up and officials waved the pair back to the sideline But after one play Texas called time out and Duke and Tommy raced in Carlisle score came on the next effort Tommy Wade was mobbcd by scores of well wishers inside the noisy Texas dressing room The guard on the door attempted to keep everyone out except newsmen but the mob made a rush for the entrance and he finally just gave up Once inside Wade seemed a bit dazed "I'll realize won it by to morrow I guess" he said BUT HE QUICKLY regained his thoughts and appeared eager to talk "I knew I'd have to play better than I ever did in my life Boy they were tough weren't they" Wade said he heard Royal yell to him only one time in that fourth quarter "He holTurn to Longhorns on Page 2 panic" shouted Royal Then he turned toward the bean and hollered: "What yard line is it on? There's plenty of time! We can do it if we just don't panic" The final score of course attests to the fact that the Longhorns didn't Quarterback Duke Carlisle who scored the winning touchdown with a one-yard burst up the middle seemed to be one of the calmest players in the dressing room afterward Asked if he ever really had the dread fear of defeat and loss of the national championship Duke answered: "No sir I made myself believe that we could come back in that fourth quarter And I think everyone else did" There was some criticism voiced in the press box when in the third quarter the Longhorn passing offense failed to click Many observers felt the Steers would have a better chance to pull it out if they stayed on the ground and not risk an interception BUT DUKE didn't think so The Longhorn fans gained some hope when Texas scored early in the fourth but this hope flickered and all but expired when Texas fumbled deep in its own territory on the next possession The Longhorns held the Aggies with the aid of 20 yards in penaltics and then began the dramatic move to the touchdown Tommy Wade a senior quarterback who has played but rarely while Duke Carlisle was leading the Texas team most of the year was the hero of that big Lady Luck played a part too Wade first hit a 20-yard pass to nix Green with the stubby junior halfback making a leaping catch at the 40 Wade on Target The Texan fans began to rise then and the student cannon began booming each time the Longhorns broke the huddle Green got two running and Dan MeIlhenny one of the many Aggie hornets on defense broke up the next Wade pass Wade shifted to Charles Talbert as a target and the end made the CINCINNATI Nov 28 Cincinnati's Bearcats gambled on two extra point attempts Flaturday and lost a hearbreaker to Miami University 21-19 in a spirited non-conference football game Miami 7 7 7 0-21 Cincinnati 0 7 6 6-19 eight pass from Kellerman (Trout kick) 46 run (Sobolewski kick) five run (Trou( kick) MI-1-iimebauch II pass from Kellerman (Trout kick) two run (Pass failed) 15 pass from Owens (Pass failed) I BEFORE JUMPING in the shower Carlisle was (period about his feelings on Navy as a Cotton Bowl opponent "Navy is real tough and would make a terrific opponent for us" he thought "But of course we'll have to let the Cotton Bowl committee worry about that" There was a bit of confusion on the field just before the Longhorns got their victory "DON'T PANIC don't 311 IMRE I EIIISI PECIACULAP DAEIGAIL13 Solids Checks Plaids Some with Zip Out Liners Somo Without Some Water nepollent FRIDAY AND SATURDAY $8950 to 000 We marked down our entire stock of famous hand tailored STEIN BLOCH suits to this one amazingly low price Imported fabrics meticulous hand tailoring everything you look for in a hundred dollar suit now yours for only $7995 or two for $150!
