season opener last night before an estimated crowd 457500 at Memorial Stadium "I was expecting to see a crisp finely tuned explosive offense and a tough rock-hard defense" Hatfield said "But what I saw was an efficient offense that did just enough to get by and a bendbut-don't-break defense that came up with the big play when it needed to" I latfield says those factors keyed his team to victory The offense used a ball-control attack to rush for 232 yards with no turnovers And the defense forced four turnovers to constantly give the offense good field position The Razorbacks defense returned one interception for a touchdown and killed two other potential Ole Miss scoring drives inside their own 5-yard line with interceptions The defense also set up the only score of the second half by recoveringan Ole Miss fumble "Our defense played hard and it had to go the distance tonight" I laffield Tarleton triumphs in opener By BKVIT IIOFFNIAN Special to Iht7 BROWNWOOD Tarleton State depended on a stalwart defense occassional offensive spurts and its kicking game to defeat floward Payne 16-6 last night Junior kicker Mike Myers kicked three field goals to lead the Texans to victory in their season-opener at Gordon Wood Stadium Howard Payne is 1-1 Tarleton's defense was responsible for its first score when Iloward Payne quarterback Jerrod Summers threw an interception into the arms of free safety Craig Hancock Hancock returned the ball for a 75-yard touchdown and Myers added the extra point to give the Texans a 7-0 lead with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter "I was basically on the sideline when 1 caught the ball and took off running" said Hancock a senior "1 knew 1 only had to get past their quarterback and a possibly a running back to return it all the way "Their quarterback was the only one who got close to me and from then on it was an easy run to the goal line because 1 had some good blocking as well" The Texans' offense came to I i le midway through the second quarter Eric King's 47-yard run on a draw play moved the ball two yards shy of the goal line But Howard Payne's defensive stand forced the Texans to settle for a field goal four plays later Myers hit from 15 yards out to give TSU a 10-0 lead with 5:17 remaining in the first half TSU's defense stopped Howard Payne's promising drive late in the first hallwhen Mario De Santiego intercepted Summers' pass in the end zone TSU wore out the clock to take its 10-0 lead in at halftime "They (I loward Payne) hit us hard but we had some great blocking and it was fun to run against them" Tarleton fullback Cody Owen said "We were able to move it at times when we needed too" A 28-yard run by Gaylon Bowser midway through the third quarter enabled Tarleton to extend its lead with another field goal Myers hit from 34 yards with 4:43 remaining in the third quarter to give TSU a 13-0 lead Tarleton came within a yard of scoring midway through the fourth quarter after a personal foul gave the Texans a first down at the Howard Payne four But on third and two from the two-yard line Bowser was stopped at the one Myers then kicked his third field goal from 20 yards to give TSU a 16-0 lead with "Our defense carried us until that play It gave us a lift and sort of a second wind" With that second wind NTSU's defense then set up a victory-clinching score when linebacker Robbie Legg hit Bobcats quarterback Ron Rittiman and forced a fumble recovered by Tom Middaugh at the Bobcats' 34 Running back Tony Baker then sealed NTSU's first victory of the season with a 17-yard touchdown run off a draw with 1:24 remaining The Eagles improved to I-I this season and 1-0 in the SIX' while Southwest Texas fell to 0-2 and 0-1 "It was a tough defensive game like we expected" said Nelson whose team entered the game ranked fifth in Division I-AA "That one break turned the game This was a very important win for us Our defense helped us hang in there until something good finally happened" NTSU's defense which last week gave up a school-record 69 points to Oklahoma carried the Eagles against the Bobcats With the offense turning comatose after two early field goals the defense led by Legg (two sacks) stopped four con secut ve third-quarter Bobcat drives inside NTSU's 35 Southwest Texas did score its first points of the season on David I laass' 34-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to pull
