Saturday Morning, May 18, 1963 EIGHT Section One FORT WORTH STAR- -TELEGRAM Presbyterians OK Unity Talks BY DAN L. THRAPP 1963, Los Angeles Times DES MOINES, May 17-Presbyterians voted Friday to continue conversations with five other communions looking toward eventual union in a church "truly catholic, truly reformed and truly evangelical." Commissioners the 175th General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church took this action by approving unanimously the report of the "special committee of nine," which is charged with exploratory conversations. They are being conducted with Protestant Episcopal Church, the Methodist Church, United Church of Christ, the Disciples of Christ and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The Polish National Church, which was to have joined the discussions, was forced by the illness of its prime bishop to postpone participation. Dr.

Carson Blake, stated clerk of the United Presbyterian Church, originally proposed the merger talks several years ago in a now-historic address at San Francisco. The conversations are carried on through the committee of the consultation on church union, which met twice at Princeton, N. in in 1962 and once at Oberlin, Ohio, in March. Six tee non-participating churches sent observers. At a new consultation a year from now.

delegates will concentrate on questions concerning "one ministry, one baptism and one reports Dr. James I. McCord, chairman of the committee of nine. Dr. McCord is president of Princeton Theological Seminary.

By "one table" he referred to the sacrament of the Lord's Super. This general assembly also approved continuing co-operation and cordiality toward the Presbyterian Church in the United States the Southern branch of Presbyterianism and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Merger talks with these bodies have from time to time been conducted. CHURCHMAN BLASTS KENNEDY'S TAX PLAN 1963. Los Angeles Times DES MOINES, May 17 A leading fund for the United Presbyterian denomination charged Friday that President Kennedy's proposed tax revision program would wreak havoc with voluntary church contributions.

The 840 commissioners to the denomination's general assembly heard the attack by J. Howard Pew. president of the United Presbyterian Foundation. The foundation, set up in 1953, raises funds to help meet the needs of boards and other agencies of the church. Pew, the 82-year-old board chairman of the Sun Oil Company, noted that in January the President recommended "many sweeipng changes" in tax laws.

One would require all deductions to be considered in a lump sum. Each taxpayer would pay a tax on the first 5 per cent of his gifts. Now he pays no tax on gifts totaling up to 10 per cent of his gross income. The President estimated this would increase the federal tax yield by $4,300,000,000, but Pew and other church leaders fear it would wreak havoc with voluntary contributions. Pew quoted Dr.

Eugene Carson Blake. the stated clerk of the Presbyterian denomination, as declaring: "Such a proposal may well be CRICKET, YET! To this, Pew added: "It is intolerable that we should permit political authorities to impose a tax on gifts to spiritual He said members of the foundation's board fear such a measure would necessitate a "serious curtailment" in church activities. "It is also my belief that once this tax is established, it will be progressively increased until the church can no longer fulfill its God-given mission."
