BY TONY CLARK Star-Telegram Sparta Wri ler The North Side Steers staked to two first half touchdowns by slamming Fullback Sammy McNeill successfully fought off Poly in the frantic fourth quarter to win the District 4A-5 football opener 13-8 Saturday night A Farrington Field crowd of 4107 saw McNeill sail 80 yards in the first quarter and follow up a blocked Parrot kick with a two-yard blast just before intermission Poly was paralyzed by the Steer defense until the final 12 minutes but then the Parrots scored and kept gunning for a go-ahead counter with the passing of Quarterbacks Gary Cantrell and Bob Purcell McNeill rushed for a total of 133 yards in the first half and later added 33 more for 166 on 21 charges McNeill's 80-step stunner ended a five-play 94-yard march The 188-pound tank shot through a good hole up the middle ripped out of a jam at his 25 and from there out-throttled two Parrots to the goal Rick Lansford toed the extra point The attacking Steers had other marches
