PAGE SEVEN The weather stepped In yesterday and today to spoil plans of Coach Odus Mitchell to select his track and field team to represent Pampa in the district meet here on Saturday and tomorrow will be too late. "What are you going to do about It?" the coach was asked this morning. the best plan I see is to let each boy select the competition he and if there is no more than three in each division, let them If there is more, I guess I'll have to pick the three looking best in practice," remarked Coach Mitchell. Yesterday afternoon his thinclads donned sweat suits and practiced starts and form beside the gymnasium.

Certification of winners has been slow, according to Tom Herod who Will have charge of the meet. Wheeler will be defending champion but to date no entry has been received from Coach Stina Cain. Deer placed first in seven events: 100-yard dash, mile-run, 226-yard 440-yard dash, low hurdles, 880-yard run, and shot put, and tied with Panhandle for the broad Jump. Panhandle was first in high Jump and high hurdles. TRAINING CAMP NEWS Tickets For Abilene- Pampa Tourney On Sale (By The Associated Press) Pittsburgh Pirates, who start an eight-game series today with the Chicago White Box, are looking to the season's first pay day with mixed emotions. Manager Pie Traynor has announced he will wait until then to announce which players are to be fined for rough-housing on pullmans which was the cause, among other things, of pitcher Russ Bauers' knee in- Jury. LAKELAND, Bridges, Detroit right-hander, gets a chance today to see if a chipped elbow bone interferes with his pitching.

He's slated to start against the Toronto Maple Leafs of the International League, his first service since he hurt his arm nearly two weeks ago. SAN Gabby Street, whose St. Louis Browns have won fifteen straight, has a comeback for some of his hired hands who figure it would be a good idea to lose one so the youngsters on the squad can learn to take it. "If you keep on winning," says Gabby, "you don't have to learn how to take it." There was a chance the young Browns might have to start today, however, slnpe they were pacing their first big-league opposition in the Chicago Cubs. BIRMINGHAM, Jimmy WOson of the Phillies expects to have Emmett Muelger, up from Houston, on second the opening day one of his big reasons is that Mueller "eats, sleeps and plays base- SAN game with the Browns is the last in which his starting pitchers pan expect to be relieved, says Manager Charley Grimm of the Chicago Cubs.

Smarting tomorrow they'll, be expected to go the accidents or heavy hitting, of veteran Jack Russell on hand to strengthen a staff weakened by injuries. Reserve seat tickets for the dual boxing meet between Golden Gloves champions of Pampa and Abilene, to be held at the Pampa Athletic arena on the night of April 22, went on sale this morning at the Pampa Daily News. Tickets will be $1, no tax, extra. Only 200 of ine reserve seat ducats will be available and they will go to the first making application. Every seat will be a good one with a clear view of the ring.

General admission tickets will not be sold in advance. Champions of the local tournament are working out daily in preparation for the big event. Down at Shamrock Benny Moore is going strong. Over in White Deer, Rusty White is getting in top shape. Jack Bible at Alanreed is already in tip top condition.

Here in Pampa T. J. Watt and Maurice Hutchinson are working after both being out because of illness and injury respectively. LeRoy Davis at present is located in Shattuck, where he is ready to go. Martin Cluck of Shamrock is an uncertain starter.

Lost will be A. N. Burleson, welterweight champion. The popular youngster was gored by a bull Monday and is in an Amarillo hospital. The bull's horn slashed his lower jaw from front to ear while he was at work at the stock yards in Amarillo.

Ray "Dippy" Norman will probably replace Burleson in the local lineup. Besides the eight champions from each city, other exhibition bouts will be staged to bring the number up to aout 16. Frankie Bills, little Shamrock ace, J. P. Mathews, little xJlayton Dunham and other local and visiting toys will be matched.

CLOVIS, N. April 7 The question of what happened to Russ Dauers, ace Pittsburg Pirates pitcher, intrigued baseball fans here today. Bauers turned up with a bad leg here yesterday, and sat on the bench while the Pirates dropped a five-inning exhibition game to the Phillips 66 Oilers of Amarillo, 2 to 1. It was their first loss in 12 starts. Immediately afterward, Manager Pie Traynor sent Bauers to St.

Louis by airplane for treatment of an injured knee. Reports of how the knee was hurt varied. Information in club headquarters at Pittsburg was to the effect that Bauers engaged in a hilarious smoking-room wrestling match aboard a train which took the team from Barstow, and a merry round of entertainment following a game there. More cautious reports here, however, said Bauers had "stepped into a hole" during fielding practice at Barstow. The fact that Traynor fined several players, 1 names unannounced, for training rule infractions lent substantiation to the wrestling match theory.

Whatever the cause, Bauers' injury was a blow to the team. Ho had been scheduled to pitch the opener against the Cardinals a week from next Tuesday. Traynor said there was doubt the flinger would be in shape for several weeks. Wheeler Boxing Meet To Begin Friday Night Several local high school boxers will go to Wheeler tomorrow and Saturday nights to compete in the second annual Wheeler tourney. Weighing in will be from 3:30 until 5:30 tomorrow afternoon.

The full list of local entries was not available today but among those expected to make the trip were Clayton Dunham, Calhoun, Jimmy Hammill, J. P. Mathews, Harry McMahan and others. Ten class weights will be open to contestants, all the way from 105 to the heavyweights. Individual awards and team trophies will be presented at the close of the meet on Saturday night.

There are approximately 3,300 standing committees in the 48 state legislatures. CINCINNATI MOST IMPROVED TEAM IN BOTH MAJOR LOOPS NEW YORK, April 7 A man has to make a swing around the spring training camps to get the inside dope on what's going on In baseball. Unless you get the managers and players off to themselves for long heart-to-heart talks you can never hope to be initiated into the inner circles. Take for instance the hot afternoon a fortnight ago in St. Petersburg, when Paul (Daffy) Dean tipped this scout exclusively that his arm was as right as rain and that he was set for the gaudiest comeback ever.

It was electrifying news at that time, and still Is, because three days later the bludgeoning Boston Bees scored nine runs off Daffy in a single inning, and he's back in the minors now. Again, there was the memorable interview in New Orleans when Manager Oscar Vitt revealed that he had accomplished a complete reformation of his new catcher, Rollie Hemsley. The writer managed to get cleat to Baton Rouge, 86 miles away, before Hemsley wrapped a dresser drawer around a photographer's head. Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis supplied another tidbit oh'the fourth tee at Bellealre, Flotida, when he shook his head violently and said he knew absolutely nothing about any investigation of the Cardinals' farm system. He gave the details a week later in about 9,000 words.

There was many and many such a choice morsel for a baseball student who was determined to gei the real inside, There are many persons, for instance, who think Manager Mickey Cochrane of the Detroits is worriec about finding a- third-baseman since he sent Marvin Owen to the White Sox. But Mickey declared he still was delighted with the Chicago trade mark and that Mark Christman was all the third-base man he wanted. Another who revealed he Was to tally unworried about anything wa Manager Joe McCarthy of the Yan kees. He was at peace with th world, he said, and he wasn't in terested in when or whether Jo DiMaggio might report. Which ac counts, no doubt, for the fact tha he was on the phone to New York the other night anxiously Inquiring if anything had been heard from hi prize holdout, DiMaggio.

Bill McKechnie of the Cincinnat Reds, on the other hand, that his case was hopeless from th start. So the Reds have been wal loping the daylights out of any am all opposition, and they only lool like the most improved club li either league. All these things, as you may readily judge, were of an exclusiv nature, the real McCoy, and wha are known in the movies as scoops Only a man on the spot, diggini tirelessly, could hope to come with news of this calibre. HUBER WILL OPEN SEASON ON SUNDAY AGfllNST PONCA CITY The baseball fans of Pampa, Gray county, Carson County, and in facl the whole of -panhandle area will get a Iqng awaited chance to see their favorite sport played for the first time this season Sunday afternoon in Borger. The game, heralding the real coming of spring, will be played at the Huber stadium in that city between the Huber Carbons and the Ponca City, team of the Western Association.

The Huber team is widely known as being one of tha strongest in the state last year by virtue of its victories in the Panhandle and in "the- Denver Post tournament held in Denver last July The Ponca City Angels are on their way from a spring trainint session on Catajina Island off the coast of California where they worked out against the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angsles Angels to their home field to "start their league play. The Angels had a strong young team on the field last year that caught the fancy of baseball followers in their brief appearances in this part of the country. The club has been strengthened, according to reports from the coast, by additions from both the Cubs and the Los Angeles club, and promises to put a snappy, well-coached team on the diamond Sunday. The Huber club is starting with a nucleus of last year's veterans, among whom are such stars as "Choppy" Spencer, sparkling shortstop; "Buzz" Ross, third baseman de luxe; Al Summers, the scintillating second baseman who played the first part of last season with the Pampa Oil- ers; "Whitey 1 Warren, sparkplug catcher; "Powerhouse" Brown, heavy hitting right fielder; "Hack" Wilson, speedy center fielder, and "Lefty" Jim Carithers, smokeball pitcher. The team will again be managed by Roy Story whose cool head and steady playing will also be used at utility positions around the field.

In addition to the veterans, Business Manager Bob Takewell has announced the following new men as starters: Galen Huffman, no stranger in these parts and who is remembered for his long hitting and fancy fielding, will hold down first base; "Lefty" Blair, insurance salesman and lefthanded pitcher will grace the mound as a starting flinger; Luke Coburn, who played last year with Phillips, will also be a starting pitcher; and "Lit" Littrell, whose specialty is knocking home runs and, like Coburn, a graduate of Phillips, will patrol left field. Huber club officials are expecting a large crowd for the opener, since the Borger team will be the only semi-pro nine in the Panhandle this season. The game is called for 3 o'clock and admission will be 2ii and 40 cents. A follow-up gaim with the same teams participatini will be played at 8:30 Monday rilgh remaining the same.
