As announced in our columns several weeks ago, the free mail delivery system went into effect yesterday morning. The unusual sight of the four carriers in their gray uniforms, helmets and canvas leg- gins, with their mail bags slung across their shoulders, put quite a metropolitan air to the city. The slight rain gave them an excuse to wear their capes, add ing much to their soldierly apjiearance So far as could be learned the system is working smoothly, though it may take several days to get it into perfect running order. The city has been divided into five routes. The first northeast Asheville, with J.

V. C. Iteake, carrier; second north Asheville and Doubleday, Neil Lee. carrier; third northwest Asheville, J. Case, carrier; fourth southwest Asheville.

J. C. Ilenninger, carrier; and the fifth south and southwest Asheville, S. Harmon, carrier. An additional carrier E.

T. KVinhardt will take the place of any of the other incapacitated by sickness or other cause. Twenty-five letter boxes will be placed ou strccts tnc hotels which the mai'r will be collected four times dailv. Twol.W.Veries will be made one in the morning and' -ai in the afternoon. All persons are urged to request their correspondents to address them by the street and number, to iaciJi-tate the delivery.

Visitors a -e socially requested to leave their addresses at the postuffice at once on their arrival, that their mail may reach them promptly. Postage on local litters will be two cents according to the postal laws, in order to be delivered by the carriers. All persocs getting the Citizen through the pustoffiee are requested to leave uiwruetions at this office as to where shall be sent, as it cannot 1 delivered by the carriers. DliCOIBER. Atkinson, who has just returned from Atlanta. that the Atlanta directors of that end of the line are in dead earnest at last in their determination to secure the building of this road. Capt. A. says he is now more hopeful than ever before and would be willing to risk everything he has that the road will be built, provided onr counties along the route give the aid they are able to give.

A letter from the President of the Atlanta end suvs, "lam sure, if we will all put our shoulders to the wheel the road will lie built. We arc in earnest and you need have no fears about A delegation from Atlanta will likely visit this section this week to confer with our people. A grand Trunk Line like this, leading from the South to the great cities of the North, and shortening the distance one hundred miles, as this will, is a project that merits and will receive the hearty support of all the people in this section of the State. Asheville now has first class railroad facilities, given her by the Richmond and Danville system, but she needs other roads traversing those sections of our county and section not sup plied with railroads. The Atlanta, Asheville Baltimore Company supplies this want both North and South.

Let us stand by the officers of thiscom pany who are manfully contending for success, and success will surely follow. If there i any man who has railroad on the brain it isCapt. Atkinson, and this lie-cause he has Asheville on the brain. It is a thought that possesses his waking and his sleeping thoughts, itisathotight that inspires his energies at home, and impels him to visits and communities at distant points North and South it is a thought that inspires his hopes and buoys him up against the apprehension of disappoint ment. Such energies and such hopeful ness ought to be contagious.

We hope they will be. and that the expectations he has of the construction of the Atlanta Asheville and Baltimore road will be fully realized through the active co-operation of every man and every community interested in the work. WORK AT THK V. M. V.

The Asheville Democrat of to-day has a very full summary of the business, bus iness men and institutions of the city- very carefully gotten up and leaving no one and no thing unconsidered. It is a very useful, instructive and gratifying statement, and gives a striking idea ot the magnitude of the interests involved here. Among the interests treated of are those of the press, and it is somewhat surprising to find how many publications are issued here, political, religious and industrial. Tun Citizen tenders its acknowledgment for the generous manner in which it is spoken of.

Meeting- of the "Concordia." The meeting of the Concordia Music-society which was to have place Friday of this week at Mrs. Maitland's has been postponed to Friday of next week, (January 10th). The club will lie entertaintd by Mrs. S. W.

Saturday last, two white men, Bud Rollins and Pace, of Tryon City, got into a violent altercation about a woman. During the 6ght Rollins bit off the greater part of Pace's nose, and then jumped on him and kicked him in the face mutilating him horribly. Rollins hat been arrested. ASHEVILLE, N. C.

a great deal of pomp and parade. At about 11 o'cliK-k a procession was formed in the court square, and moved through the streets of the city headed by a very good colored brass band from Statesville, and marshalled a great array of gailv caparisoned horsemen in all the bravery of bright colored ribbons and sashes, and a plentiful display of the stars and stries. The whole affair was decorously managed, and was of much interest to spectators ho reflected on its meaning. It was a striking note of one of the greatest events in history; it was a memorial of the emancipation of a whole race from slavery and its elevation to the rights and privileges of freedom. It matters not by whom done or what the motive.

Too close inquiry might reveal the fact that it was not as generous or disinterested as it seems. The fact stands that it is done, and that the negro is a free man. I'pon that we congratulate him, with the hope that he may rise to the significance of the sublime fact, labor to qualify himself for the right exercise of the duties of citizenship, liberate himself from the thraldom of party dictation, think and act for himself with the acquirement of a knowledge of the institutions of government, familiarize himself with the leading questions which govern or divide parties, and take his place in the political ranks upon a knowledge of public questions, not through passion, prejudice or dictation, and all will l)e well. And this, without reference to which side free and untrain-mcled judgment may fall, is all that the white )eople can ask. In the afternoon the assemblage gathered in the court house to carry out the plans of an elaborate program.

This embraced music by the band, followed by prayer; then music by a select choir. A poem was then read by Mrs. Julia A. Martin, then music by the band, followed by the reading of the emancipation proclamation by the Rev. K.J.

Carter, then music, and then an oration by the Kev. S. 11. Wilherspoon, closing with music by the choir. We were not present, but judging from the enthusiasm of the large audience, the exercises were highly enjoyed.

And we are gratified to licnr a general testimony to the decorum of the large crowd participating in an occasion so naturally prodiicliveol'enthusiasm somcw hat wild, in this case teniieieil by well considered restraint upon very laudable and excusable emotions. Our old friend John Salmon, a former resident of I Hit ham. where we first knew mm, and tor two or three years a resi dent of Asheville, after having regaled our citivim lor some months with a beautiful display of fruits nnd flowers most artistically ami tastefully exposed in an okmi tent pitched under a giant oak, proposes to go back partially to his first lovif. Me is nii.pt in otKtt tttd ornamental painting, in that line a real artist. For John comes from the great centre of the useful arts, the great city London, and is a valuable contribution to that cosmopolitan character which so listinguishcs Asheville; but he has been so long in America us to have absorbed all the American vim and energy needed for success.

The effect on vegetation has been evident, sometimes remarkable.
