concern is that televising home games dilutes attendance The team set an attendance record last season and has sold a record number of season tickets HSE has argued that televising home games helped spark interest in the team Delay game: Credit NBC with learning from history Two Sundays ago Notre Dame upset North Carolina but the network cut away quickly after the game and missed the post-game celebration Sunday even though the game ran 30 minutes longer than expected NBC stayed put after the Irish beat Duke in overtime The shots of coach Digger Phelps telling his players to thank the student section and the hug between point-guard warriors David Rivers and Tommy Amaker were worth the wait The length of the basketball game forced the start of the fight between Fort Worth's Gene Hatcher and Frankie Warren to be delayed 30 minutes 0 Credit this line to ABC boxing analyst Alex Wal lau during Saturday's Evander Holyfield-Henry Tillman World Boxing Association junior heavyweight O'DONNELL Star-Telegram Writer CORONADO Calif The NCAA Infractions Committee's decision on the future of the SMU football program should be announced early next week a school official said Sunday "We've targeted somewhere between the 23rd and the 25th (of February) for a joint press conference in Dallas" SMU faculty representative Dr Lonnie Kliever said "We'll be announcing whatever sanctions next week" David Berst director of enforcement for the NCAA said the SMU case had top priority among the four heard by the infractions committee between Friday and Sunday He said the NCAA wanted it resolved "as quickly as possible" "I would anticipate it (the announcement) being the first of the week" Berst said "I don't believe we can move fast enough to do anything this week" Berst said an announcement on possible sanctions against Texas Tech's footbil program probably won't be made for two weeks Tech officials met with the committee at the Hotel del Coronado for three hours and 45 minutes Sunday morning about alleged recruiting violations said to have taken place between 1982434 SMU's hearing Friday afternoon lasted four hours It concerned allegations that major rules violations continued in the football program after the school was placed on three-year probation in August 1985 SMU could become the first school to receive the "death penalty" meaning it could have its football program suspended for up to two years Kliever said he and Berst discussed a possible announcement date several days before and immediately after SMU's hearing "After the hearing David indicated that the beginning of next week you've got to be sure he's ready to play" said Dan Reeves coach of the Denver Broncos "With John there was a lot of pressure But he was memorizing things instead of understanding them and there's a difference He wasn't comfortable In retrospect I think we rushed him" Testaverde compares well to Marino physically say some scouts "He has more speed than Marino and he has his quickness in the pocket" said Tony Razzano director of college scouting for the San Francisco 49ers "He has the quick arm like Marino and he's very very strong" Testaverde is considered a better athlete than Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar who started ahead of him at Miami "A much better athlete" Steinberg said "He's quicker and has a stronger arm Kosar has a strong arm but not a quick release But with Kosar you're talking about a genius a guy with total knowledge of the game" About the only criticism of Testaverde is that he has trouble reading defenses ad that stems from his bowl-game performances in the past two seasons In a 35-7 loss to Tennes fore Holyfield got the victory when the fight was stopped in the seventh round CBS's Chris Economaki hosted coverage of Sunday's Daytona 500 despite a broken vertebra in his upper back He suffered the injury when he slipped on the ice in front of his New Jersey home 0 Opening night blackout: With the Associated Press TAMPA Fla Virginia Commonwealth's Bruce Allen who sparked his team to victories over Jacksonville and Old Dominion last week was named the Sun Belt Conference player of the week Sunday Allen a 5-11 senior guard scored a season-high 20 points and had six assists against Jacksonville The Newark Ohio native came back with a 17-point six-assist performance against Old Dominion Allen is averaging 131 points and 44 assists per game on SMU priority would be the optimum time" Kliever said "He thought it could be 'done by then "He indicated it was a complicated case to report" Kliever said school officials want the case resolved quickly so they can begin interviewing candidates for the athletic director's position left empty when Bob Hitch resigned in December Kliever said the school will not begin interviewing until it knows the fate of the football program Berst said the infractions committee hoped to complete all deliberations and determine all penalties Monday He said a rough draft then would be made of the SMU decision and copies returned to the six committee members for perusal and further consultation Berst said he would fly to Dallas for the decision's announcement "When a case is sufficiently complicated we think we should be there in person" Berst said Texas Tech officials appeared grim as they left the meeting room Sunday They said little to reporters Asked if he was discouraged by how the hearing went Tech athletic director Jones said: "Never having been in one of these I don't know how to answer that" Infractions committee chairman 'Frank Remington declined comment Tech was represented at the hearing by Jones president Lauro Cavazos faculty representative Robert Sweazy and counsel Pat Campbell The allegations against Tech include cash inducements illegal gifts and free meals The offenses allegedly occurred during the coaching tenure of Jerry Moore who was fired in 1985 after compiling a 1637- 2 record in five seasons Four of Moore's assistants were named in the allegations None of the coaches involved is still Lit the school legs see in last year's Sugar Bowl and a 14- 10 loss to Penn State in this year's Fiesta Bowl Testaverde had eight Interceptions and one touchdown pass while completing 534 percent of his passes It is a criticism NFL personnel people say they're not taking seriously "Was Marino a Phi Beta Kappa?" said Jack Faulkner director of football operations for the Los Angeles Rams "Geez and all he's done is throw for about six million yards" Said Young: "People say those things about every prospect With (Atlanta offensive lineman Bill) Fralic it was that he needed to work on his pass blocking That's because he didn't do much of it in college Hell Testaverde is a young quarterback Of course he's going to have some trouble with defenses What you're Judging though is potential and the potential is there with him "They used to say that Johnny Unitas threw into coverage Well he'd throw into coverage and complete It They used to say Bobby Layne didn't throw a tight spiral All he did was throw the ball end-over-end into the Hall of Fame" is ce ap-tar- ed ch ing tes)ut on he ost ignited a threehit Texas run What kind of impact Testaverde can have as a rookie is another thing altogether Tampa Bay which finished 2-14 last year has the first pick in this year's draft If the Bucs do not trade it Testaverde likely will be playing behind an offensive line that allowed 56 sacks in 1986 "I don't think anyone can have an immediate impact" said Gil Brandt personnel director for the
